Here's my basically finished firelance starhost. The pictures look a bit better on my instagram but oh well. Getting my army ready for my first tournament!

I have a wooden base sorted for my dread saurian but I'm not sure how to go about it. Its big and wooden so I'm not sure painting it is the best idea. Any ideas?

Why are you hesitant to paint it?

True if you apply some paint to it, it will likely draw up grains of the wood a bit (due to the moisture), but that is easily manageable with a bit of sanding or applying whatever texture you desire over top of it (sand, filler, etc.). Or better yet, you can apply a couple of thin coats of varnish to it to protect it. Once varnished it will be extremely resilient and you can finish it in whatever way you desire.

Obviously don't apply paint to it that is excessively watery or you run the risk of warping the wood.

Prime it, sand it with sand paper, and prime it again, and then paint it.
    (allow for drying between coats.)

oh and like nightbringer said a final coat of varnish couldn't hurt either.

Use a cheap acrylic paint from the artist store or spray paint from the diy... gives you a nice basecoat to arrange the other materials on... later details can be done with usual he paints or whatever you prefer...

    Exactly!

I never use my expensive GW paints on terrain unless it is the tiniest of details. 99% of the paint is use is stuff like this (or very similar)...

It does the job very nicely and it costs mere pennies in comparison to expensive model paints.

Found really cheap paints in the 1€store recently... 1,50€ for 250ml of paint with a consistency that lets you thin it down to become twice or thrice as much...
(Don't as why they sell stuff for 1,50€ while calling themsthemselves 1€store;))

Been a while but here are some updates. Finished the dread saurian completely, base and all.
Done a second bastiladon with a midnight engine. Just need to finish the base.
Start a slann, I've given him a cosmic chair but can't decide on his colouring. Thinking of either pink with some bright feathered around his neck (like a boa) or either bright yellow so he's the sun of my midnight purple army.

nice conversion of the carriers. I'd reccomend a blue wash on their skin though.
