To those who measure from the base: How do your saurus warriors on 32 mm bases perform in combat? I suppose that GW does not take base sizes into account when creating point costs for matched play (as the official rules says measure from the model), so they will have fewer attacks than for example a unit of dreadspears with the same point cost. Is this a big problem?

Spears get more models attacking than regular weapons as they have a 2" range than a 1" range (even with the same size base of course.)

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Spears do really well in units of 40. Regular weapons do well in smaller sized units such as 10.

I tend to say it probably is.

As for the spears: yes they somewhat reduce the problem, but... Skeletons with spears can hit from the third row, Saurus can't.

Saurus can if you do the lower example. Which, interestingly enough is more efficient under certain circumstances.

Sure. But they take up even more space that way. Navigating a Saurus horde between terrain is kinda tedious.
Lords of Space and Time makes it much easier though.

Sure. What im saying is the same horizontal space yields equal or better results. More area deep is usually not an issue. Therefore its worth doing... always.

Personally i like more square bases for effectiveness. The threatening range of back ranks is increased.
The cons is that, for the unit, it's easier to be too far away from your wizards' buffs.

I would assume that they simply ignore it because in practise you're rarely going to get a perfect charge of and the actual difference due to base size will probably be statisticly neglicable. Most non-horde units will Always get all there stuff in range, most horde units probably average somewhere from 10-20 models depending on how reliable the particular unit can charge. Yea fiddling with it might get you that crucial extra wound, but in between all the factors it's just as likely to be because you happenend to put 0.1" further to the left to begin with during set-up.

Would measuring model to model change anything as a whole? I undestand it could give more attacks since measuring from the spear is sometimes closer than the base, but the model we're attacking isn't necessarily helping as he could be further away from the edge of his base.

    No it wouldn't help much.
But it would make quite a lot of stuff worse.

measuring model to model mostly allows for stupid shenanigans where you point a spear forward to have half an inch more reach. It's very much a thing that guy does.

What does that have to do with measuring base to base?

    SHENAGINS.
(Caim all of your models are in cover) :lurking:

    Back on topic....

Are round bases mandatory or can you still use square 25mm bases,
cause they definitely rank up 20mm tighter in 3 ranks.

Round bases are not enforced by rules.
They have some advantage over the square ones, especially for screen units. 10 models with round bases can form a larger barrier

I think that one might be pushing it a bit, good luck getting away with it :p

As for ranking up tighter, I very much expect it won't pay off much and well, just don't be that guy :p

I thought you were saying about:

That guy: Hey! My skinks will shoot your hero.
This guy: but he's not in range...
That guy: the boltspitter says otherwise. (measuring from the edge of the weapon with a cheesy smirk)
