AoS Convince me to go Seraphon

    Good morning all! I am brand new to Age of Sigmar and will be starting an army this weekend. A family member has a box of Skinks or Arknaughts that I can choose from as a gift to get me started. He plays Skaven and another family member is building Ironjawz.

    I’m torn between Seraphon and KO. Both look cool. I like the guns of the KO, but the big Seraphon beasts as cool as well.

    Convince me! (Thanks in advance)

    - Flying Dinosaurs!

    EDIT:
    Not the new guys who can do anything, a bit of an underdog compared to the tier 1 armies. But you can beat them!

    Other than that Obvious cool factor there's the following:
    • One of the few races to have actual survivors from the world that was. And not just puny survivors that hung onto sigmars coattails and now squat in his cities. But the powerfull slann that literally went into space and now roam the stars to fight chaos. They're not just Aztec lizardmen riding dinosaurs, they're Aztec space lizardmen riding dinosaurs, which is like a 100 times better :p
    • A very varied army with well everything really, the only thing we don't really have is proper long ranged firepower I think, all our stuff tends to stop at medium range. Or at least, in theory we have everything, saurus guard are supposed to be heavy infantry but thanks to power creep fall a bit short by now..
    • Balance wise we're somewhere in the high middle, we score say about a 7 out of 10. However, because of our great versatility allows us to be able to defeat a 10 army if we're allowed to actually tailor a list towards em. There's 3 reasons why we're not ranked higher. 1) Our armies rely on synergies, which means they're nearly Always rather specialised. Since they're so specialised they're easy to counter themselfs. Point limits aren't high enough for us to bring everything and make up for this. 2) Our units are versatile, but none of em are really the best at what they do. Since we can't win on raw power we need actually capable generals. 3) The reliance on synergies means our armies are more easy to pick apart. Kill the linchpin and the army losses much of its power. In contrast many of the other armies don't really start falling apart until they're well and truly decimated. This means that we'l rarel win tournaments as we're bound to encounter something we can't deal with, but we might be more than capable of decimating the actual winner :p
    • The variance also makes us one of the nicer armies to collect seeing as there's somewhere around 30 models to get.
    • Relativly easy to paint, since we mostly field animals/animalistic units precision isn't as important. Screwing up the colours a bit on a scaly hide doesn't ruin the look like it does when screwing up the colours on ornate armour. But there's still plenty of detail to put in once you've become better at it.
    • Overal fairly well balanced and fun to play with and against, few units that are truly useless, and nothing that's too frustrating to deal with. However, power creep and the changes from the two GHB's do mean some of our stuff feels like it was intended for another game by now (e.g. the introduction of the rule of one broke special rules for Kroak, scar-vet on cold one and ripperdactyls. Similarly our eternal starhost is very sturdy until you see how common mortal wounds have become). This can be frustrating, though it also depends a bit on your opponents, if they're nice and make a house rule for some of the more frustrating/silly aspects and aren't playing like that guy it should be fine...
    • Did I mention they're Aztec space lizardmen riding dinosaurs? :p

    Why play Seraphon? Why would you play anything else!?

    You have AZTEC DINOSAURS RIDING DINOSAURS INTO BATTLE.

    You want to compare that to some steampunk dwarf manlets? Oh no, they ride balloons into battle! How about riding some PTERODACTYLS THAT DROP MORTAL WOUND BOMBS or ANKYLOSAURUS THAT SPIT MORTAL WOUND SNAKES EVERYWHERE and when they're not shootings snakes they're shooting GIANT CRYSTAL POWERED LASERS THAT ARE SUPER EFFECTIVE AGAINST CHAOS!

    Metal beards compensating for something? Pah! Go into battle naked, you don't need armor, your scales are stronger than their steel! Your bite more deadly than their swords! Forget siege engines, ride a Carnosaur into battle and tear them apart in a fury of claws and fangs!

    Do all of this while your skink priests and frog gods foretell your victory long in advance, and have access to the best spellcasters in the game while also fielding the best of brutal, primal might!

    And if you really must talk competitive, Seraphon do quite decently, tactics discussion on this forum can help you out there and they aren't too difficult to field. In fact, the current uber-meta involves a bunch of stormcast with a giant blob of skinks helping them out!

    Now we are also d(a)emons.
    We move through space AND time.
    Our bodies are no more made with just meat and bones, since the very immortal magical essence of the universe now flows in our veins, and we trascended mortality itself.

    You don't need to be convinced, Oletreebark: you already know the right choice is Seraphon.

    That's actually not true, just that said muscles and bone are now starforged with blood made of star-magic

    To the point that the blood of a saurus warrior glows with the intensity and might of the sun, which can kill a vampire instantly, and saurian blood purifies any chaos-corrupted land it is spilt on.

    So even when we lose we really win. Or at least that's what I tried to tell the tournament ref but no defeat "technically" counts as a loss.

    Yeah, I made a correction to my post, but it was a tiny poetic licence to underline once more how badass our race is.

    Oh, just a question, guys: does somebody knows if Seraphons (apart from Slanns) can still feel/experience pain? I don't remember now if there are any hints in the official fluff to answer this question.

    I am pretty sure they do. Even Chaos Demons feel pain (IIRC) so I see no real reason why Seraphon shouldn't.
    I don't remember any official fluff source though.

    In fairness, chaos demons are individual entities or shards of their greater demons and/or the gods themselfs, they're all separete "sentient" beings. The majority of the seraphon however are just magical apparitions, no need to make those feel pain really. Unless its somehow advantages to being a good saurus warrior I don't see why the Slann would give the ability to feel pain to their remembered troops.

    Wouldn't remembered troops just have the attributes as Slann remember them? IMO that would include feeling pain.
    Otherwise Slann could just "remember" them having four arms, skin as hard as steel, laser eyes and regenerating limbs. :D

    Well yes, but you only need to remember the usefull bits. I doubt slann's are remembering every internal organ of the things. There's no need for them to eat as they're sustained by his magic anyway, so why bother remembering say a stomach. Hence it depends on how "necesary" the bit is. I'd assume they'd leave out the unnecesary bits.

    As for "remembering" laser-eyes or regenerating limbs, clearly that'd be deviating from the great plan and possibly even chaos corruption so the slann wouldn't evere do that. If the old ones would've wanted them to have laser eyes they'd have had laser eyes already ;)

    No no no no no! This is incorrect.

    They are NOT apparitions NOR are they sustained by the will of the Slann!

    People are taking the "Spring forth from the memories of the slann" and "appear out of thin air" lines a bit too literally.

    Seraphon are physical. We know they are physical as they live their lives apart from the Slann.

    Not only do we have entries in the Seraphon battletome listing what the Seraphon do after a Slann has fallen (and no, they do not disappear) but there are other short stories detailing a skink priest waking his slann from his slumber, and the community site even lists that the Seraphon live in cities along with other races, in addition to floating chunks of Lustria hovering high in the sky of the realm of Azyr where the Seraphon hang out.

    As far as deviating from the great plan, every individual slann has their own interpretation of the great plan, and many argue amongst themselves on the best ways of dealing with chaos. In addition, many have gone crazy from the length of time it has been since the old world fell, so you're bound to have some frog gods misremembering things or trying new things for the hell of it.
