I'm thinking of getting a figure case like this one to store my models in so I can "clean them up" as my girlfriend would say . Can anyone tell me which cases are any good (and not horrificly expensive) and how much should roughly fit in one? There doesn't seem to be any indication on GW's site as to how much can fit. An indication like one of those foam things an hold 40 saurus warriors or 30 liberators or something would be most appreciated.
The old GW cases hold around 50 warriors in 3 layers or around 90 skinks KR case of a similar size fits 54 skinks in one side and 2 steggys in the other depending on which foam inlays you use.
so like 15-ish warriors/layer or 30 skinks? It does look significantly different from the newer cases though, does anyone know how the newer ones compare?
Just in case Yourube didn’t mention anything about the lizards, I would personally recommend the GW cases if you want ease of use. The awkward shapes of our minis work well in the style they went with A word of warning though If you want to use Dinos. You will probably need to remove one of the smaller foam trays to fit a Dino as they take up a lot of hight.
I was indeed wondering if those weird shapes in the GW box served any real purpose. Figured as much, but that's fine. Mostly just want to store some of the bulk of units I don't care much for showing off so my girlfriend doesn't get overwhelmed by models taking over our appartement . Being able to put away 90 skinks in a convenient manner should go some way to achieving that
What I can find online for the new cases they have some issues figuring out how to fit in the proper large stuff (GW video shows them taking out a knight, noone seems to know how they got the knight in) and they have some problems with spikey bits that point out getting slightly bent. Anyone know if that's a proper issue or are the reviewers just kind of incapable?
For me one of the worst examples is the Troglodon. It is almost impossible to put that in any case without breaking off one of his antennas that are sticking out in every direction. The only way to transport those models is to have them standing upright with nothing touching them. Those GW cases might be good for most models but just don't fit for some.
What about smaller guys with slim bits sticking out? The spears on saurus warriors, a starpriest staff (have had that one break at least thrice already), our various banners with their feathers and such, etc.
Saurus Warriors are OK I think, As long as you don't pack them too tightly. But yeah you can break spears or something off. It will happen. Even worse are very small models like Skeletons with spears. Those break more easily. All bigger Infantrt models (like Stormcast, Ironjawz or so) have thicker weapons that probably won't break off. My friend I play with has a GW case for his Ironjawz and it works fine. The Skink Starpriest is a bit worse since his feathers work like hooks. That's a bit of a problem. I also broke off his staff more than once already. Right now I am happy that I mostly play in my house so I don't have to transport some of the guys... When I do I use shoe boxes or Tupperware containers that I fill with paper tissues. I will get me a Feldherr bag or a GW case though. I think it will work fine for Saurus or Skinks at least. The other cool option is the metal case + magnets.
right, well the GW does seem to be what I need most then.. especially seeing as it seems to be the most all-round one, the others seem to prefer specific shapes. Now the question is just which one.. buy the cheap one and be guaranteed to need another if I do end up liking it, or buy the big one and potentially waste a lot of money..
Check out "Feldherr" if you can get those somewhere. (No problem in the EU but I don't know where you are located) Those work similar to GW but are a bit cheaper. You can get generic or specific foam thingies for them. https://www.feldherr.net/en/
o, those are nice, especially stuff like this (seriously, why are GW boxed games boxes so awefull for storage..) Thought the cutouts being square does make em a bit less versatile when storing odd shapes from customized models or combining different sizes.
If you have not already, I would check out KR cases (https://www.krmulticase.com/bespoke). I really like their system, as when placing an order you decide which foam layouts you want in each box. So if you do a little planning beforehand, and know what units you want to place in each box, it is easy to choose the most optimal combination for those units. In addition, later on, if you have more units or perhaps another army, all you need is to buy additional boxes and switch out the boxes in the carry bag according to which army/unit you are using. Edit: A side note on the planning, before I order from them, I always take and review the foam layouts available, and then draw it out on paper to check how the shape/size work with what I planned to use it for. That way, it is easy to ensure the different foam layout you chose in a box, work as intended.
I've heard getting one of those metal cookie trays with the plastic lids and putting magnets on the bases works fairly well and wouldn't be too bank breaking
Someone (I think @NIGHTBRINGER?) magnetized his saurus and just put them inside a red toolbox. That worked pretty well for army setup and cleanup. I personally use some Husky tool/bit storage bins that you can find at Home Depot/Lowes/other hardware stores. The little compartments inside can store a decent amount of models, I got my entire Lizardmen and Bretonnian armies in their own container. The only things that don't fit are the big guys (Carnosaur and Stegadon) so I need to find new containers for them. Terradons fit but only because they are not attached to the base, and I have their bases in a shoebox currently. On the upside everything fits; downside is that some tiny pieces occasionally break, so if your paint job is anything higher than very basic tabletop standard I would invest in some foam. Old pics:
That was me, but it was my Warriors of Chaos (I've since done quite few more units including my Temple Guard)...
