Hi all, Complete newbie here doing some theory crafting before purchasing my first models. I've done a bit of thinking and seen I can get exactly 1000 points out of a couple of starter sets and a unit of skinks: Allegiance: Seraphon LEADERS Saurus Scar-Veteran on Carnosaur (240) - General - Command Trait : Thickly Scaled Hide - Warblade - Artefact : Phoenix Stone Saurus Oldblood (120) - Suntooth Maul - Artefact : Obstinate Blade UNITS 20 x Saurus Warriors (200) -Clubs 10 x Saurus Knights (200) -Blades 10 x Skinks (60) -Boltspitters & Star Bucklers BEHEMOTHS Troglodon (180) TOTAL: 1000/1000 WOUNDS: 81 To me, this looks reasonable. I'd be interested to hear a few things from some more experienced players however. - What are the pros and cons of this list? - How is the setup looking on my leaders? Is there a better way to do it? - Spears v blades/clubs on the Saurus units - what's more viable? - How should I look at expanding my collection going forward? Thanks a bunch, I can't wait to get started.
Take a look here on how to get the most out of a Start Collecting box: http://www.lustria-online.com/threa...rom-your-start-collecting-seraphon-box.20560/ Cons of your list: Troglodon not great without a Slann in my opinion. Warriors weak, particularly in a pack of 20, need 40 to really get your moneys worth. Knights are pretty bad without firelance and a lot of buffs. 10 skinks is gonna get shot of the board quickly. If you get two SC boxes and follow the guide at the top you'll get yourself a bunch of units you can use to mix and match something a bit more competitive. The biggest thing to remember in Seraphon land is that our units work best when they can buff and receive buffs off each other.
I like spears for the 2” range. Have to compare whether you want an easier to hit roll, or more dice to roll. Sure that must balance out. I built most of my saurus warriors with clubs after I came to that conclusion....(of course!) And yes...I wish I had known about the start collecting thread mentioned above. On current point values (jun 2018) you get about double points worth out of the SC box alone! (Assuming you can only make 1 scar vet on cold one). Also, if you’re playing casual with a friend, ask them if it’s ok for you to use proxy models for a couple of games until you come up with a list you like. So many scrolls so much choice! It’s a lot of money to fork out on something that might not suit your play style etc. Then once you find the one, grab them and get them painted. Sigh...hindsight. A wonderful thing....
