    Hello Seraphon friends!

I'm attending my first AoS tournament this Saturday (been to a bunch of 40k, but never an AoS) and i'm going back and forth on what artifact I want for my Slann.

    My List:

    Slann
Oldblood on a Carno w/ doppleganger
Sunblood w/ dimensional blade or blade of judgement
    EoTG

    40 warriors
    10 warriors
    10 warriors
    10 skinks
    10 skinks

    2 ballistas

    Cogs

    Fangs
    Sunclaw

As you can probably tell from the dopplegangers cloak, i'm using the Ulgu realm artifacts. The options i've been considering are:

    Talisman of the Watcher
    Spellmirror
    Miasmatic Blade

Basically, i'm looking for a defensive artifact of some kind. Spellmirror seems like it would help with Death (which I don't have a ton of experience playing against) while Talisman of the Watcher makes it so my Saurus block has a de-facto mystic shield without needing to waste a cast on it. Miasmatic Blade would help against shooting armies, stacking with LOS for a very nice -2 to hit.

    Any suggestions/experience playing with these?

IIRC Spellmirror was FAQed so it isn't that great anymore.

I think I would go for the Talisman. Hard choice though.

    Talisman or Miasmic Blade imho.

Thanks for the advice! I was definitely leaning towards talisman as well, my slann is basically untouched every game but I've never played against a heavy shooting list.

    Spellmirror is still the same.
Lens of Refraction has been FAQed, and actually it works only once per battle round

I always use the Incandescent Retrices because my Slann is the linchpin in my army and I can't risk losing him to deep strike shooting.

My only concern about incandescent Retrices is the chance it does nothing. I feel like a sure thing, like miasmatic blade, is better over the course of an event... but there's not a lot of shooting in my local meta so I haven't gotten a lot of chances to test either option out.

You can use Curse of Fates to help make it more reliable.
To snipe a Slann you have to dedicate a lot of resources, and the threat of failing on a 3+ is usually enough to dissuade an opponent from even trying.

Preventing Damage seems to be a better option this edition. IR might still might not be enough healing to save you even if you roll the 3+.

Against something like Stormcast dropping 4 Ballistas or a bunch of Raptors? Probably won't save you, but against factions with limited shooting/casting like Tzeentch, Sylvaneth, and LON (Zombie dragons) it's much better.

Are there other defensive artifacts are worth using on a Slann? Gryph-feather Charm is the only one that comes to mind, and it was much better before they changed Longstrikes and Skyfires to unmodified hit rolls of 6. My lists use a Doppelganger Cloak on an Engine of the Gods and I value that more than the GFC and Ignax's Scales on a Slann.

Ignax Scales is a pretty common choice for players who plan to keep their Slann out of enemy Line of Sight all game. It helps reduce enemy mortal wounding spells that don't require line of sight. Not sure that I would take realm of Aqshi Artifacts in a 3 artifact army though. Ulgu is probably the best.

That's where my head was at as well. Wish I had a better target for the sword of judgement, but the dimensional blade on the sunblood is still pretty nasty.

I think i've decided on Talisman of the Watcher, but I might flop to spellmirror if I have any Nagash induced nightmares before the tournament ;)

Doppelganger Cloak is so ridiculous on an EOTG and Dimensional Blade on a Carnosaur boosting its attacks is insane, too. It's really hard not to pick Ulgu.
If you are having trouble with Nagash you should take Light of Dracothion from Seraphon allegiance on a support hero like an Astrolith Bearer - the guaranteed dispel on Hand of Dust completely negates any threat he poses to your army.

I also like Light of Dracothion. It would be nice if it were expanded to standard unbind ranges though.

Generally, Gryph-Feather Charm or Miasmic blade are best all-around choices. Ragged Clock is usefull, if enemy has single of couple strong shooting units, that can pass through all -2 to-hit. But I have nothing on my mind, but Stormfiends, that can dig out in 3" for their battalion. Ignax Scales is critical against arkhan. Rectrices are not only random, but can be countered by overkill too.

About Aqshi artefacts - thermalrider cloack on scar-vet on carno can be much fun, especially if he has killed something with jaws. Go 14, command run 6 and then 2 d6 charge, and all this with fly.

Figured i'd give everyone an update!

Overall my first AoS tournament experience was an absolute blast. Played 3 great games against Nurgle Deamons, Chaos Dwarves, and Nighthaunt. Unfortunately I only got a major win against Nighthaunt, with a Major Loss against Chaos Dwarves and a Minor Loss against Nurgle. Both of my losses were incredible close (only lost by 2 victory points against chaos dwarves, and we accidentally calculated summoned points destroyed when determining the winner in my Nurgle game) and I ended up winning Best Sports, really happy about that.

In terms of how Talisman of the Watcher performed... I really can't say since I forgot to use it with disturbing regularity. And when I did remember, my Slann was farther than 9inches from anything worth using it on. Miasmatic blade would have been HUGELY helpful against Chaos Dwarves, but he was pretty much unscathed in every other game.

If Doppleganger's Cloak wasn't such an MVP I'd definitely branch out to different realms, but i've been loving the impact it has on my opponents decision making. Ultimately, I think i'll keep Talisman of the Watcher for now and just try to get better at using it, but I'm going to consider other options. As soon as you want to teleport that big block away, the artifact becomes largely useless, and I found a lot of the time i just really, really didn't want my slann that close to the action.

All in all, i'm painting stuff up, tweaking my list, and getting ready for the next tournament! Tonight i'm going to try to write up my games with a little more detail and i'll throw them over on the Battle Reports thread.

Talisman shines more in a castling list. You might have better results with it in Thunderquake.

For sure! I think i'm going to start trying different things and see what happens. I really like the idea of using Light of Dracothion, so I might try that next. The amount of times I failed to unbind was irritating to say the least.
