When buying them spears does you actually swap them with the one-hand weapons or is more like an additional equipment? In other words can I choose whenever to use the one-hand weapons or the spears? thanks!
I read page 88 of 6th ed. rulebook, I think I can actually select to fight with the spear or the sword for the whole unit once per fight.
I don't have the 6th ed army book with me (currently at work) but I've always understood it that the spears replaced the hand weapon. Happy to be proved wrong though.
I vaguely remember people switching back and forth between spears and hand weapon and shield, but I don't know if that was an official rule or a common house rule.
I think it's possible, think about 6th ed. Black orcs that can buy an extra choppa or a great axe and still can get a shield, they are the best example of the rule at page 88 of the rulebook because can select shield and weapon or two weapons (or great axe).
Fun fact, Saurus used to have two attacks and it was only fairly recent, either 7th or 8th edition that supportng ranks only got one attacks. So if you had a two attack profile and spears, will for a period of time, all competitive players chose spears over hand weapons for Sauri. Anyway there were lots of variations of special rules that nerfed this. At one point, I remember a Saurus specific rule that their supporting attacks didn't get the full attack profile. At another point Saurus had A1 but they had a special power that gave them a bonus bite attack so whatever their weapon was, their extra attacks were at base Strength and Weapon skill with no add-ons (which made Temple Guard sort of annoying as you got a halberd attack plus a weaker follow up attack, kind of like horses attacking after the knights attack. After several evolution of Saurus Warrior bonus attacks, in 8th edition we got Predatory Fighter.
Saurus history lesson! Anyway I'm creating a list with the Sacred Hosts rules and I chose Quetzl's, now I want to add another blessing spawn to my saurus cohort to bring them to special choice, sotek or tlazcotl?
Yes, but there was a period in 6th edition where we had an intermediate list from a White Dwarf magazine where Saurus infantry with spears got two attacks from the supporting ranks, and I remember the Temple Pyramid Vault gradually developing a consensus that spears were far superior to handweapons.
