I first got into Star Wars with the proper Lucasfilm editions of the Prequels on DVD, and I still watch and cherish those very same DVDs (with their lovely immersive menus) to this day. The box they came in has been rather well-loved by younger me I must admit.

This meme's showing its age rather with the DS :D

(Says the chap who still watches and enjoys DVDs and rejects the foul degenerate anti-societal BS that is streaming )

I'm perfectly fine with streaming platforms... as long as i use them to watch things as Reacher TV series... it would be a nightmare to have everything on DVDs.
But good movies demand that i own a physical copy of them. ;)

Fair enough... but personally I prefer not needing to rely upon having an Internet connection just to watch my favourite films and TV series . I am lucky enough to live in a decently-sized house so am not worried about the storage caveat with DVDs (even though they're still a space-saver compared to videos before them :D).

Do you find the resolution of the DVDs still satisfactory? Especially with Blu-ray and 4k around.

Absolutely, DVD resolution is perfectly fine. I admit I haven't watched anything on Blu-Ray or 4K so I can't fully compare, but I doubt they're so much better that it's worth replacing my whole DVD collection with either.

Funnily enough, I've heard that Blu-Ray players are already dying out whereas DVD players are still alive and kicking, especially those integrated into TVs. From the sounds of it, the quick rise of the malevolent society-destroying entity that is Streaming seems to have spelt the premature end for Blu-Ray, while DVDs' comparative affordability has earned them a lifeline.

    What?

    Either you:

    1. have a really old TV (that can't display the higher resolution)
    2. are sitting extremely far away from a relatively small TV
    3. don't have very good vision
The picture quality isn't even remotely close, especially between DVD and HD (Blu-ray), but 4k is the cream of the crop.

Personally I prefer the higher resolution. It's a substantial upgrade moving up, but even more jarring when watching anything in SD once you've become used to HD & UHD. However, I see your point that replacing old DVDs would be very costly, and once someone starts down that path there really is no end. DVDs become Blu-rays, which then become 4k and eventually 8k and beyond.

How about rather than replacing your old collection, you instead go with blu-ray / 4k on any new additions to your collection?

Of course, if you don't care about the resolution, DVDs are really nice in that they are super inexpensive. And the picture quality is still pretty good, especially on smaller TVs and monitors.
