So, recently my wife mentioned she might be interested in playing, if only to help me improve my game. She's the best. Anyway, I was showing her the models on GW's website and her eyes lit up when we got to Death, especially Nighthaunt. So, a local fellow AoS gamer happened to be selling the Nighthaunt half of Soul Wars and I picked it up for her. My question is, where should we go from here to making her a competent 1K list she could bring to local events and, possibly, tournaments. She's competetive by nature, but not overly so. Our local scene is mildly competitive, but pretty friendly as well. As I said, she loves Nighthaunt, but also likes nearly all the other Death models as well.
I would get the Battletome for Nighthaunt first and see what she likes, loads of great models and options.
Yup, I got it in the box. She pretty much loves everything in there, but also likes the models in Legions of Nagash.
I love Arkhan so built around him, Skeletons, Black knights, spirit hosts, Wight kings and 3 Necromancers
Both LoN and Nighthaunt are great armies, and relatively easy to play for beginners. And at least with LoN you cannot pick something really bad. So just get what looks cool, you can build an effective list with it.
I'm thinking we may start off basic with the below list. I'll still have to get her 2 boxes of Chainrasp and 2 of Grimghast (why are there only 4 models in Soul Wars?!), but it gives her a starting point. Then go from there depending on how she likes it and how she wants to play. Allegiance: Nighthaunt Leaders Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed (140) Spirit Torment (120) Guardian of Souls with Nightmare Lantern (140) Battleline 20 x Chainrasp Horde (160) 20 x Chainrasp Horde (160) 10 x Grimghast Reapers (140) 10 x Grimghast Reapers (140) Total: 1000 / 1000 Extra Command Points: 0 Allies: 0 / 200 Wounds: 76
I can't speak to getting her into the gaming side of things, but I know simply supporting my fiancee in her desire to paint minis has gone a long way. It doesn't hurt that she's damn talented at it. I just know that letting her explore on her own and choose models that she likes the aesthetic of has done wonders for our collection, and has helped keep me motivated in my painting I figure that eventually she'll get curious, and at that point she can dip her toes into the gaming side of things.
I have played a few games of Mordheim with my wife, I think what helped was starting games very simply and very small. I wouldn't start the first battle with a huge number of models (therefore more variables to learn on the fly) and with two forces of roughly equal strength, to keep things on an even playing field.
Where do you guys get these 'wife' things? I'm guessing they are in-store exclusive because I ain't seen them on the webstore anywhere, they sound pretty cool.
I believe it's an upgrade pack for the basic 'girlfriend' set that you have to buy separately. They come pre-painted, pre-made and in all different colour schemes, with varying accessories. I found two particularly perfect specimens that would have been exceptionally compatible with what I had to offer, but one disappeared off the shelf of life before I could get it and the other came in a two pack with the 'annoying and repulsive friend' so I'm waiting to encounter it again in a single pack.
