    So,

If you were only allowed to take a single discipline on your Slaan, which would it be?

I'm hoping to go to a tournament in a few months that has such a restriction. I'm conflicted between The Focussed Rumination, Focus of Mystery and Becalming Cogitation.

Knowing the whole Lore of Life is useful and the game-breaker that is Dwellers is VERY handy as is the vital Throne of Vines.

Having the extra casting dice is equallly tempting. Being able to out-gun my opponent in that phase is awesome.

Becalming helps to level the field considerably but is limited by its range.

The extra die is more handy than the loremaster ability. Why? Simply because with four spells to roll for you are quite likely to be able to get the spells you want, add in the Plaque of Tepok for a fifth spell and you are virtually guaranteed all the spells you really want.

The Becalming Cogitation is a useful discipline to have but once again we can get in some decent magic defense with a dispel scroll and/or the cube of "You have no magic phase."

So to answer your question, if I was putting only a single discipline on my slann it would be . . . . The Soul of Stone, just kidding the Focused Rumination.

Ethereal discipline is a great second discipline if you plan on using a lone slann but I wouldn't take only ethereal.

I'd pick The Focused Rumination and here's why:

    - Knowing all spells is useful only when you have lots of PD. Plaque of Tepok is cheap and allows you get an extra spell anyways.

    - Becalming can be avoided by some wizards, they can play with the 24'' range and STILL be in range of the TG unit, but out of the Becalming bubble which is measured from the Slann.

    - The Focused Rumination makes it possible to cast all your spells pretty much every magic phase unless you roll 3 dice or less. Really, I see no reason not to take it as the 1st discipline of a Slann.

Rumination is the only "must have".

Also, tell your TO the restrictions are silly. Ask him if Dwarves and Empire are restricted to one war machine, Skaven to units of less than 20 models, and Daemons to one god. You know, to make things fair.

This, its completley unfair I would rather him say no teklis or he is favoring his army or his friends army. Some poeple can be Dic ks who run tourments I got kiked out of a 40k tournament last year because the runners "best friend" lied to me about waht his carnifex was taking and should of failed the armour save and died then the owner said dont worry about it, I protested saying it was unfair favoring his friend and he kicked me out. 3rd match of the day and I won all 2 so far.

I agree with the rest of the forum. An extra die per cast is what turns the slann from an average wizard into a great wizard. On top of that you canget a lot of spells and alot of magic defense in other ways as has been stated. Is the restriction on slanns the only one or are there restrictions for other teams as well?
I could understand that you forbid the uberslann of 3 diciplines cupped hands and bane head, but only allowing one dicipline seems hard if you let the other armies use their full force.

    Higher State of Conciousness.

I ran a bare bones Slann in one of my lists for my online tournament and that is the only discipline I ran with. He was still a deadly caster and I got the spells I wanted through when I wanted to. He did due two out of the four games, but I managed to win both of them.

A cheap Slann with one discipline allows you to field more troops and in most cases, does not require any more help to make him a great wizard. Additionally, Higher State of Conciousness adds a second dimension to the Slann, one where he can actually charge things small units and monsters and tie them up in combat.

Thanks for the replies guys. The majority vote wins and confirms pretty much my own train of though. Additional casting dice + the plaque of teapots :)

As far as the tournament comp it looks like this:

BSBs can take mundane equipment allowed to all Heros of that type.
Special/named characters or named unit champions cannot be taken
No double Rare choices may be taken (so my 2 Salamanders have to go in a single unit now)
No triple Special choices may be taken
Units that are not characters are limited to a maximum of 400pts
Units are limited to 50 models strong
Power Scroll and the Folding Fortress are banned
    Allies may not be taken

High Elves can take upto triple Special and double Rare choices
A Slaan can only take his single free discipline
Daemonic gifts may not be duplicated
Cupped Hands, Book of Hoeth, Infernal Puppet, Draknehof Banner, Sacrificial Dagger and the Pendant of Khaeleth are banned.

So there you go. Kinda anti-lizards and not much anti-any thing else. I lose my 2 x 1 Salamanders, Loremaster, Becalming and Soul of Stone as well as Cupped Hands. At least there can only be a single Abom or Hydra in a list :)

Not only would I not participate in that event, I would ruthlessly mock the TO for being terrible.

I think most of the rules are fairly good, however I think that the bonus rules for HE are ridiculus. They are in no way the weakest army in 8:th and do not deserve the extra boost.

Other than that I think the comp is fairly balanced. The 1-rare only rule stops double hydra/A-bomb/S-tank and the max 50 models in a unit rule removes the most ridiculus tactics.
The comp is anti-lizard but our army is strong enough to stand upp to anyone else anyway.

Let us know how it went.

Well I went to the tournament and came 11th out of 28. I was the 2nd best Lizardmen player at the event but got absolutely steamrolled by an Ogre Kingdoms deathstar unit.

As far as my Slaan... other than getting his head kicked in by those Ogres, he did pretty well with just Focussed Rumination, the Plaque of Tepok and the Ruby Ring of Ruin. I had 6 spells from the Slaan each game and one from his Level 1 Skink Priest friend. Generally I was without Awakening of the Woods because I switched it for Earth Blood and then I had all the spells but had to sacrifice either Regrowth or Shield of Thorns.

The tournament itself was fantastic. £500 raised for Cancer Research UK and a massive raffle at the end that my mate got a box of State Troops and a Hellblaster Volley gun out of.

So there you go... a tooled up Slaan is awesome, but a budget Slaan can also work wonders. Just for a giggle he had the Banner of Discipline. Cold Blooded Ld10...WITH A REROLL! :)

It's not a boost, it's compensation - otherwise they'd have been nerfed higher than the other races. High Elves are allowed quadruple rare choices and sixtuple special choices according to the basic rules.

I've started using 2 mounted scar vets in my army, and I'd like to know how you played with them against Gunline, if you faced any.

So far the setup is: one with GW and 4+ warded heavy armour, other with halberd, dragonhelm, VotFF and 5+ ward
