My bro isn't all that big on painting, although he's getting much better and as he improves he's finding he enjoys it more. However, in order to get us both back into the Warhammer hobby, I offered to paint an army, or at least the beginnings of one (I have other projects, some more of a personal interest;) ), for him. These are they. I will add new photos of new units as I paint them.

My inspiration has come from a number of sources. Initially, I got inspiration from Medieval II: Total War. If anyone's ever played it and ventured to the New World, you will have seen the Aztec Armies there and they are a different sight to the somewhat uniform Games Workshop Lizardmen. I decided I wanted these Lizardmen to look more like those from Medieval II: Total War; lots of different and vibrant colours littering the battlefield. Each unit would have a level of uniformity, but across the army no two units would be exactly the same.

I will post images as soon as I can figure out a way of doing so. Whenever I try, I get a message saying that images can only be 1 pixel wide!

    Sorted now, thanks!

Right so, first up were the Skinks, a nice vibrant yellow scheme. This was my favourite out of about 4 colour schemes.

The next unit I did was the Saurus. Although I'm happy with the colour scheme, I look back and wish I'd painted them now instead of 2 years ago. I've improved a bit since then and I'm improving all the time. Still, I suppose had I not painted them, no improvement would have been made at all.

Next I moved onto the cavalry. I opted for something a bit darker here, to counter the vibrant skinks and saurus. I've still used quite strong colours, especially on the shields and the mounts, they're just a bit darker.

The last unit I painted for him was the Temple Guard. I wanted these to look a bit grittier, more grizzled, than the rest of the army. So I chose a more muted colour scheme, more akin to a crocodile than more vibrant forms of lizard.

That pretty much concluded my work on the Lizardmen Battalion box that he bought. Across all of them, I went for a very dark base, almost black, to represent the rich, fertile soil of Lustria and then used plain static grass to break that up. The movement trays were simply sprayed black and then given a coat of gloss varnish to try and make them look more like polished onyx (although I admit the final result looks like lacquered plastic!)

After finishing the Battalion box, I took a break from Lizardmen for a bit. I'm a bit whimsical when it comes to painting, I struggle to concentrate if I paint the same things over and over again. It was a miracle I managed to stick to the Lizardmen as long as I did, although painting each unit a completely different colour scheme probably helped. However, as my brother had left a significant number of boxes of models in my house (some of which I've returned to him, unopened, so he can enjoy painting them), I made a new years resolution to clear down my painting backlog in 2013. I would do this by entering the monthly painting competitions in my local GW stores (herein referred to a Battle of the Brush). The first category of the year (discounting January's judging, which was largely painted in December), was Monsters and fortunately for me there was a Stegadon just waiting to be painted.

I must admit, I struggle sometimes with monsters (and 40k vehicles for that matter). I don't know what it is but I think I struggle with anything that has large areas of the same colour. But, I came up with an idea right from the word go, planned it out and once I'd got going (and got past all that Orange) I found myself enjoying it. I took inspiration for this from the Mel Gibson film, Apocalypto; specifically the scene where the Aztec priests are sacrificing the tribesmen they've rounded up. I very much enjoyed the visuals of that film (well, as much as one can enjoy the sight of a priest cutting someone's heart out), the way that the priests were all painted, head to toe, in red and yellow paints; the way there was no metal and all their jewellery was made from what appears to be Jade. So, I thought, that's what I wanted the Engine of the Gods to look like. And here's my efforts.

For the record, I came joint second. I should be happy really, given the quality of the top three entries (it's hardly Golden Demon, I know), but I felt that the winner was the weakest of the three. The two models that came second were a step ahead IMO, although I am very glad it wasn't me judging! Very tough to call, especially between this and the other second place model.

And so we come to the last model I painted. This is an entry for the Next Battle of the Brush competition, and is my first attempt at Object Source Lighting. Continuing on with the Lava theme from the Stegadon, I scratch build the base using bits of movement tray, PVA glue and green stuff for the bubbles. Also, I have continued on with the Jade theme instead of metal and stone.

No idea where to begin. That stegadon is brilliant. Excellent horns, love the colour of the jade you've chosen. The pupils on the cold ones look good, I struggled to get mine on there. Hope there's more coming!

There might not be much more Lizardmen stuff for a while. I have a couple of models left, but I'm working some High Elves at the moment.

There are plenty of Lizardmen boxes with my brother, but they're his to paint really and although I'd love to do them and he'd probably let me, there is a very big queue of stuff at my house that is not painted yet. But I would love to have another go at some Lizardmen in the future. I've really got my paint on at the moment and I enjoy the freedom with colours that you get when painting Lizardmen.

Post whatever other stuff you paint, too. It'd be good to see more of your style.

Question on your scales. Are you undercoating them black or a really dark color and then drybrushing over them to keep the line distinction between the scales, or are you washing them, or going back and painting the lines between the scales?

Really great looking stuff man. Love all the different colors and I especially like the way you did the Jade, came out awesome. Care to share what colors/steps you took to produce that color/effect? I also love the lava on the Slann's base.

On the troops it's all done with washes, the Stegadon waz different.

Basically start with a base colour,.for the red I used Mechrite red, but I suppose now.it would be Khorne Red. Follow that up with a wash, I used brown but with the new citadel colours you could get away with the crimson wash. Next I do something called over-brushing, which is a bit like dry brushing in that it uses a reduced amount of paint and you draw the brush lightly over the area so that only the raised areas are.covered. You need more paint than you would use for.drybrushing with because you do want coverage. After that a simple drybrush and then a glaze if you like, the ones pictured were glazed using watered down inks but the new citadel glazes are fine (although my red glaze is a bit too powerful so beware).

The stegadon was painted slightly differently. I painted the entire model, well the beast anywag, orange before I did tge scales. Then I pretty much painted each scale individually. On the Steg that's much easier than it sounds because they're quite big and so are the scales.

The Jade is simple too. Base coat with Incubi Darkness, wash with Coellia Green, layer with Kabalite Green, highlight with Sybarite Green and then drybrush with Helion Green finish with waywatcher green glaze to finish.

Another tip, if you've drybrushed anything, always try and put a glaze over the top as it reduces the chalky appearance that drybrushing often leaves behind and creates a smoother finish.
