Normally battalions would come in your "allies" cost, which effectivly makes it impossible to use them.

However, Slaves of darkness can take the mark of a chaos god, at which point they're no longer part of "allies" but become a proper part of that chaos god's allegiance. Does this also work for batallions?

Sadly no, the battalions are keyword Slaves to Darkness and Chaos. Thus the battalion and all the units in that battalion would be considered allies. Beast of Chaos are able to ally into other armies with their battalions because they are keyworded Beast of Chaos, Chaos god's Name, & Chaos.

well that's dissapointing.. I really liked the idea of it.

Also, wouldn't the actual units still have the correct allegiance as they'd now have both slave to darkness and say tzeentch as keywords. So the "ally" cost is merely the cost of the actual battalion (similar to how nurgle can field all clan pestilence stuff)

That is how the rules use to be interpreted. Shortly into second edition the designer comments on the core rules changed the way points are spent on allies and battalions. Now if a battalion doesn't have your allegiance keyword then you have to pay ally points for all units in the Battalion and the Battalion itself. This is the case even if the units in the battalion have your allegiance keyword.

I do miss running Plague Touched Warband for Maggotkin :(

well that's just lameā€¦ It's the one properly interesting use of allies and they make it impossible. As if allies aren't limited enough already with their relativly low point caps. I would have prefered other caps than just a flat point cap, fitting in an interesting supporting battalion, or a special unit with some bodyguards is difficult even at higher point values, now it's just one or two special models that do something your army can't and needs little or no support to be effective, like a random wizard a monster or some artillery.
