For sure. @Scalenex will sometimes even proofread it for you when you submit to him. If he doesn't, you can just ask him or anyone else.

I tend to re-read mine several times and then make my brother read it in real life. Then he gives me criticism involving many star wars prequel quotes. This is a good system, I assure you. (Although my Dad is also good at proof reading, I try to avoid letting him see it so it can be a surprise when he reads it in the contest)

    !!!!!!
    samesamesamesamesamesame!
'Prehistorice Park' and 'Chased by Dinosaurs' (+sea monsters) on DVD and I still regularly watch them with my brother (along with the 'Walking With...' documentaries). I can quote so much of it off by heart that it's a bit sad...

    Yes!

(Perhaps we should start a thread dedicated to the Prehistoric Park/Walking With/Dinosaur Documentary canon so I don't derail this thread with my fangirling...)

Well, it could be much worse - he could give you criticism involving Original Trilogy or Sequel Trilogy quotes...

    It shall be done:

Yes, anyone. In fact, on the forum might be preferable than in person given GERMS!

    That's a question for He-Who-Is-Covered-In-Scales mate

Just ask @Scalenex or ask @Scolenex to get his attention.

    AAAAAAHHH!!!!!

I need to bite the bullet and just start typing my story.

Somehow it's worse when you haven't done ANYTHING on it yet.

    Momentum is key I feel.

@Scalenex ...when you proofread how do you do it? I’ve seen different styles.

Such as: anything that needs fixing I bold text it. But I leave it to the author to fix.

Or: I fix it. I mark everything I fix with bold. Author will need to unbold to submit.

Or: I fix stuff, make it as perfect as I can, but it is up to the author to compare the original to the fixed version to vett (double-check) the changes.

How do you prefer to work?

Whenever you finish. Plenty of time (days) left. But after you finish.

Put it down for awhile (at least an hour.)
(Play a game or do something else for an hour or two.)
Then Reread it with slightly fresher eyes...you may find some changes yourself.
    Then send. :)

Started typing mine, but given that I’m going to be starting a job in a couple of weeks it’ll take quite a while to write

The father away the deadline is, the more intricat I get.
The farther away the deadline is the more intricate I get.

I like to make changes in red. If the errors are very minor I will usually not mark it with red and just say "I fixed a few minor spelling and grammar errors." I'm also less likely to bother with red close to the deadline.

If I'm fixing something that is not a grammatical error propose rewording something for clarity for emotional impact, I will show the rewrite in red. Unless it's one line then I might use quotes to draw attention to it.

Take your time, there are weeks before the deadline.

(there is nothing wrong with what Pendrake wrote, I just quoted this for an example).

I use these two, but with red instead of bold.

If I'm pressed for time, I don't bother with the red.

Once in a great while, I will add a whole other sentence to someone else's, when I do this it is purple.

I have a lot of fun with color text. I do not use bold, italics or underling because sometimes people use these fonts in their regular work deliberately.

I am pretty blind at spotting the errors in my own work. For our short story contests, I usually find myself drafting 2487 words, so I have to figure out a way to trim back eighty-seven words.

For short story contests, I usually find myself drafting 2487 words, so I have to figure out how to cut eighty-seven words.

(See cut two words). Just have to do that 44 times.

@Scalenex had a good flick through your religious thread for lizardmen. Fantastic stuff. The level of detail is astounding.

I have my story idea now, which should hopefully have a good nod to the thread and data within.

(This now being the standard greeting for you ;))

TBH I didn't read the whole thing, I went through reading pieces that got my attention until I had a solid idea for a story. Thanks @Scalenex !

Why are you roping me into this. I am NOTHING like Scalenex.

I am furry not scaly, and I don't do editing. It's hard enough to type my own posts with these giant paws.
