I would like to paint a unit of black skinks with either yellow or red eyes. I would then like to put a single bright blue or purple stripe down their back. Also I would like to paint them with red hands. What do you think?
Black is a tricky color to pull off. I suggest making it a dark grey instead. Perhaps basing with Charadon Granite, giveing them a heavy wash of Badab Black, and then highlighting with Adeptus Battlegrey would give a better-looking result.
I'd like to see you try to get at least one test model out. I'm always interested in how folks highlight black. I've seen people use dark blues and dark greys. Look forward to the work!
Ive found a very dark brown works well, then black washed. But imo the read hands is a bit too much. You should stick to 3 point colouring. Ie 1 dark, 1 light, 1 spot colour. So for you it would be black body, purple/blue stripe (scales) and spot being eyes (this donesnt include metals and woods) but thats how you would tie your amy together =] Lloyd
Yep, this is how I highlight black, with a light blue (almost white) highlight. Sounds counter-intuitive, but it actually works well. The red hands could be challenging. I second the motion for doing a single test figure before you jump into this.
Sounds interesting. Would definitely like to see how this turns out. Also, if you figure out a nice purple combo, lemme know, my girlfriend wants me to paint her skinks purple
i have an old unit of skinks painted Liche purple with fiery orange crests and bellies. that is actually a nicer combo than it sounds on the topic though, im all for the red hands. will look great if correctly executed. as mentioned before, black is a tricky color, and how you do it depends hugely on what effect you desire. a really REALLY black color is made with sharp thin highlights of white/blue, while a gentler more natural black can be highlighted by mixing in pretty much any color. rotting flesh and vomit brown (any yellow) produces some really interesting highlights when mixed with black. there is no substitute for trying, so get working
