I don't play too many board games, but one I absolutely love is Talisman 4th Ed. It's relatively easy to pick up, albeit quite a lengthy game, but a great one to play if you have the time. I've been known to play this over a couple of days if the game was particularly long. Ideally you'd play this with at least 2 players, however there is no reason why you couldn't adapt it for solo play.

The core rules are fine, however where I think this shines is when you throw in a house rule or two, add an expansion (I have 4 of them), and use an alternate ending. I'm actually in the (long) process of using StrangeEons to create some Warhammer Fantasy / Age of Sigmar cards (heroes, enemies, items, spells etc.) to use with the game.

It's now out of print due to FFG losing the GW licence for it, but I understand that GW will be re-releasing some of the expansions later this year (Reaper + Dungeon please). I also understand that GW will be releasing a 5th Ed. in 2018.

Other games on my radar are:
    • Star Wars: Imperial Assault (love Star Wars and own the core set, but just haven't played it :()
    • Resident Evil 2 (I've backed the Kickstarter)
    • Zombicide Black Plague (prefer this over the vanilla game, don't own it yet)
    • Dungeon Saga (not played it, but I like the idea of a dungeon crawl)

What board / miniature games do you play?
    What would you recommend?
    What would you avoid?
What's out there that you'd like to try but haven't had the chance to just yet?

    Let me know below! :)

Along with AoS, I also quite like the Star Wars X Wing Miniatures game

Zombiecide: Black Plague, Twilight Imperium 3, Firefly the board game, Star Fluxx. All are good in different ways.

    Mordheim

    I have that one.

    Sky Galleons of Mars

    ...is another one.

    Dystopian Wars

I only recently learned that its Forum is dead, the Company has ceased trading, and its IP and assets are being sold off. (In related news: what does anyone know about Wayland Games?)

    Does chess count?

    Of course chess counts!

Was there any particular reason any of you picked the games you did? Is it the theme? Gameplay? Introduced by a friend? I'm interested (if you haven't already guessed) to hear your stories!

I also love X-Wing - the miniatures are so detailed and the play style is very realistic, although I wish they would do miniatures for Republic and Separatists, considering they have done the Original Trilogy and are doing the Sequel Trilogy which are basically remakes with a few added extras on. I am very pleased with the TIE striker for Rogue One though - noticeably different than the standard TIE in gameplay as well as looks.

I also play Star Trek attack wing, which I thoroughly recommend for all X-Wing players who also like Star Trek, as the rules are similar but noticeably different for the lore, science and tech for Star Trek.

Vastly different wargames I play include Warhammer Invasion (although I only have the core set), Shadow War Armageddon/Necromunda (I have the rule books for both, SWA in book form and Nexromunda as a PDF, and have played Necromunda several times, looking forward to play SWA) Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game (use the older rules before GW released the ugly warband format) and D&D.

In terms of Board Games, I recommend Heroquest, Heroscape, Risk: Godstorm (Risk meets Age of Mythology) and Warcraft: The Board Game. I have Heroquest and Risk Godstorm (along with Risk original although I prefer Godstorm), and have played Heroscape and Warcraft at my university's games society.

I read online recently that the assets and universe were picked up by someone else.

My Dad taught me how to play chess, so that is how I got into it. Plus it is still THE greatest game in terms of skill.

I enjoy chess, surprisingly though I also like custom chess sets.

Also, not exactly table top, more yard games, buy I absolutely love Kubb

I find those sets fun to look at, but distracting to play with. It's too easy to mistake a piece for another.

That reminds me: has anyone done a cool chess board yet with Lizardmen/Seraphon or other Warhammer models? Some of them would make pretty epic chess pieces.
I might make some picture with that just for fun....

    King: Kroak or Slanm
    Queen: Slann or
    Rooks: Saurus Guard
    Knights: Saurus Knights
    Bishops: Priests/Starpriests
    Pawns: Skinks

And on the other side some Undead or so:

    King: Wight King
    Queen: Banshee
    Rooks: Grave Guard
    Knights: Black Knights
    Bishops: Necromancers
    Pawns: Skeletons

Unfortunately I am a really bad chess player. I know the rules but that's pretty much it.

As for my board games.... none really at the moment. Unless Silver Tower counts.

    Yeah would work.
I don't own any Skaven though and don't plan to either. So Undead will have to do. :)

You could buy some for a project such as a chess board...?

Are you going to put this together? I'd love to see something like that take shape.

This is a very good idea. Lizardmen vs Skaven all the way!

Is silver tower any good? I've never played it but kinda like the idea of a dungeon crawler.

I kinda like it. A bit more complexity in combat would be nice but I guess that's probably my D&D background talking.
    It is fun.
