Back in the deep, dark depths of 2009 I had a bit of a go at making some Southland skinks with Foundry Zulu isiHlangu shields and an attempt at a natural lizard colouration over on the Work_In_Progress conversion forums. While I liked them I never went anywhere with it - mostly because the shields were really awkward and a bit too heavy to use on little skink arms.

However, the idea of a Southland Lizardman Impi has stayed with me for a long while and when I saw the plastic Warlord Games Zulus with lovely light plastic shields I knew it was a sign from Sotek. And having seen some of the beautiful paint schemes over here I'm going to forgo the dull, natural greens for a bright yellow/orange/red/black lava colouration.

I've got the following 500 point warband/iNtanga planned to get me started:

15 Saurus (full command, hw) - the uDloko 'Savages'
10 Skink Skirmishers (javelins) - the uHlwayi 'shower of shots'
3 Ripperdactyls - the iziNyosi 'stinging bees'
Skink Priest (level 2, opal amulet) - Mshauri, the scribe of the Slann lord Ixoxo

So I've picked up a box each of married and unmarried Zulus (mostly for the shields but the additional bitz will be very helpful) and there are two sizes of shields on there, so I'm keeping the larger isiHlangu for my Saurus warriors and have started on the smaller sized iHubelo for the skinks. The Zulu arms have a convenient arm ring to sever the arm at without much problem, to which I can attach the longer Skink upper arm. As well as the shields I've trimmed the spikey bits off the javelins to make them more streamlined and assegai-like. The results are below:

    bitz_for_skinks.jpg

In various stages of assembly on the left and assembled shields on the right.

And when the skinks are fully assembled:

    unpainted_skinks.jpg

Now to get them primed and painted!

    What he said /\

Impi Lizardmen is one of the best theme ideas I heard in a while! It would look very distinctive and actually culturally make sense. When you get around to Saurus Warriors I figure you'll probably go with spears right? For the aesthetics?

    Thanks guys.

With the saurus I'll be using the spears from the sprues but cutting them down to make iklwa style hand weapons. They'll be slightly longer in the haft than the normal hand weapons but look nicely Southlandic.

That is incredibly tempting. I think I'm going to have to give that a go once the skinks are done :D

Finally finished painting the skink unit:

    uHlwayi.jpg

I'd forgotten how long getting fairly uniform units done took. After years of painting a single model at a time for Infinity or RPG purposes I think I'm going to have to change my approach. How people get 50 models up at once floors me.

Next up should be the Skink priest.

Cheers. There was lots of inspiration from Haemoglobin and Silverbolt's colour schemes.

Had this little guy painted up for a week now but getting decent pics has been a nightmare. The dark skin has a range of colours in person but just flattens out in pictures. If I get actual sunlight next weekend I might try to do a few more pics.

I was tempted to do the voodoo skeletal warpaint but decided that the model was far to busy with all the feathers and the headdress. Will try it out on another model instead. Maybe a cowboy...

Reeeally liking the skink paint job! Any way you could get a close up of one of them? Can't wait until you get some saurus painted up :)

Cheers. I've got some rippers waiting before I tackle the big block of Saurus. I'm still brainstorming what I want for the banner and musician.

Anyway, managed to get some better pics of a few of the skirmishers (though the priest still eludes me):

And a sneaky look at my cowboy on his non-cold-one. Still needs tidying up.

    And the cowboy.

Not 100% sure about him. I wanted him to be really dark to separate him from the standard saurus who'll only be shaded down to dark red but he looks a bit fussy compared to the non-cold-one. I'm glad I remounted him though, I think the standard cold-one would have looked even more confused. Not sure if I like how much the scales have come out as more leopard spot patterning either but going to chalk this up to experience. Soon I'll have a scarnasaur to paint and I'll know what to avoid :p

Very happy about the great weapon jade though.

    Thanks guys.

The non-cold-one is a Hasslefree dinosaur (with the crest removed because it was annoying to place around.)

Quite happy with the vibrancy of the colours so far. About as far from Grim!Dark as I can get ;)
