I've just got my tickets for heat 3 and would like to stay pure Seraphon.
    I'm considering either running

    Kroak-General
    Astrolith-Phoenix Stone
    Starseer-Phoenix Stone
    Skink Starpriest

30 Skinks in 3 tens with Bolt Spitters and shields
    6 Ripperdactyls
    Bastiladon with Solar

    Shadowstrike

100 points to summon vortex for Kroak

Plan here is same as the SCGT but with some improved shooting/combat from the Bastiladon. If I'm going first I can use Kroak and his summoned vortex to push the Bastiladon forward and hopefully ensuring he's in range to impact the game straight away and help clear any screens for the Ripperdactyl's.

    Alternatively I might try..

    Kroak-general
    Engine of the gods-Phoenix Stone
    Astrolith-Phoenix Stone
    Starseer
    Skink Starpriest

    30 skinks armed as above
    6 Ripperdactyls

    Shadowstrike

    160 points for summoning

Similar plan as I can push the Engine forward to get an additional d6 mortal wounds in from the Engines hero phase ability or summon a Salamander depending on deployment. There's also the chance of additional turns, which with Kroak's spells is likely a win. Can also summon a Salamander later for objectives or to again help clear a path for the Ripperdactyl's party.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers in advance

Kroak without a Balewind Vortex seems a lot less of a threat - the second list does not look like it has enough of a summoning pool for one.

So the Bastilodon will more reliably add to the turn 1 carnage against a castled up opponent. The EotG has a small chance[1] to pretty much auto-win and gives you a few more points to summon a Skink Chief or Skink Handlers to be generally annoying or just score. Also if your opponent stays castled up the EotG can potentially devastate them with the D3 wounds per unit effect on turn 2 onward.

As you have already qualified I would go for the more fun but more random option. That's just me of course :)

If it comes down to grinding out a score how does your Kroak bomb do in 3 places of power? The EotG list definitely has more scoring presence for that scenario with a durable mobile hero and the chance to summon another hero.

[1] I did try to mental maths the odds of getting that 18 for the almost-auto-win but with so many ways to modify/re-roll/discard dice I could not work it out. Anyone know the odds?

13% of the time it works all the time!

I guess I'm hoping to kill all their hero's swiftly and wonder up with my skinks and kroak later on in the game.

13% is good enough to make any opponent sweat!

...and the rest of the time you should be able to get the 6-9 result for some extra mortal wound output. Well obviously not always but the odds would be good of getting that result and if the dice are totally against it you are maybe close enough to take some re-rolls for that shot at glory!

Is the priest a named character like at SCGT? If so you can't take him as part of the shadowstrike....

No he's not. I have to take a legal list to a GW event, skink Starpriest is the leader of the Shadowstrike

I prefer the bastiladon, but with your rerolls, and the astrolith, the engine might be the better way to go here. Even one game with the double turn will be all worth it. Tough call between the lists.

I agree, the Bastiladon is stronger list and gets much better with curse of fate and mystic shield cast on him, nigh on impossible to kill.
The engine list is more fun though. Fun is the point right?

Fun is usually the point; however, I would say that is slightly different in a competitive setting. I hate playing against WAAC players in a local setting, but if its a GT or tournament -- bring your best!

Don't really have the experience for this as I never played EotG yet. Been playing 2 Bastiladons though and my thoughts are :

Bastiladon seems more safe and stable
EotG sounds more devastating with some luck although less reliable

so I guess it all comes down to how you feel like going. EotG can probably be focused down fast as well while Bastiladon will survive most of the things but then again, never been to the biggest tournament out there like you so your judgement definitely counts more :D

No way! All thoughts are welcome chap.
I'll try and get some games in, might try and do a few battle reports, as I notice there's a thread on here for those. I've just taught my mate how to play and then wrote it up in a Facebook group where we are getting ready for Heat 3. Was fun. Might be enlightening reading back on how they play.

Do you use the snakes or Solar?
I like the idea of snakes but solar would fit the army concept much better

Solar all the way. While snakes can be astonishing against hordes or some specific situations, solar is 100% reliable in all games and can be used in all kind of uses - Hold a tough op unit while destroying units opposing something else on your table, lock down unit and focus it, lock down / block big threats while sniping heroes that have to be near objectives etc

Indeed it was mate. 4 majors 1 major loss to an undead army that just wouldn't die!
