Hello all! I found a gem on Youtube this morning:

This is an interview with a very successful tournament player. He not only talks about Seraphon as a whole but does a breakdown of 3 very popular and powerful lists! Great insight for newer Seraphon player’s who are looking for some good combos and core lists. Give it a listen, great while painting or working!

Fascinating, thanks so much for sharing.

What are they talking about when they mention the number of "drops" a list has?

It's the number of drops that you have to do to deploy your army. For example, if you have a list like that :
    • Slann starmaster
    • Eternity warden
    • Saurus Guard x5
    • Saurus Guard x5
    • Saurus Guard x5
    • Eternal starhost battaillon
You have 2 drops, one for the slann and one for the battalion (Eternity warden and all Saurus guards). But if you don't take the battalion, you have 5 drops, because the battalion allows you to drop all the units it contain in one time.

Thank you! That’s kind of what I thought it meant from context, but I couldn’t make the numbers add up as I had either forgotten or simply never knew the rule that allowed you to set up battalions all in one go (or, now that I’ve read up on it, in more than one go if you choose).

Is that true for all battalions, or is it something unique to the Eternal Starhost?

Sorry for the potentially silly question but i'm just getting into AoS after playing WHFB for many years.

    I don't think it's a silly question (but then, I didn't know about it!).

According to the language I'm reading in the Seraphon Battletome at page 129, I think it applies to all Warscroll Battalions.

"When you are setting up, you can set up all of the units in a warscroll battalion instead of setting up a single unit. Alternatively, you can set up some of the units from a warscroll battalion, and set up any remaining units individually later on, or you can set all of the units individually."

I don't own any other Battletomes, but I'm betting that same language appears in the Warscroll Battalions section of all of them.

That's awesome, thanks for the info! Gives you a lot of control over your drops which is pretty cool.

Yes, bataillons (apart from the abilities they bring) do these things
    - reduce the number of drops
    - allow you to take another artefact
    - some armies: You can choose another spell/prayer for a wizard/priest

Which is also why they are now more expensive than they were before. People were taking fairly useless but cheap bataillons per default (Sylvaneth and SCE had some that only cost 40 points or so), just to get those artefacts and reduce the number of drops.
Since the change there are rarely (if any) bataillons with a point cost of less than 100 points.

So all battalion gives you access to 2 artefacts, or just some have that as a built in benefit?

I believe that you always have access to one Artefact, and that for each Battalion Warscroll on your list you get an additional Artefact. Can't take the same one more than once and no Hero can have more than one. The rules for this are in the "Allegiance Abilities" sidebar at page 116 of the General's Handbook 2017.

ETA The bit about not being able to take more than one "copy" of any Artefact is actually one of the Rules of One in the Pitched Battles rules.

One of the things he mentioned in the video is that he felt the seraphon struggled against the high armor save armies like ironjaws. In my experience Bloodclaw tends to do well against these armies. The high volume of attacks put out by buffed knights and the bravery bomb aspect of knights+carnos really puts work in. You wont survive the attack back probably though, so you have to play the attrition game.

I play against Ironjawz regularly and they usually don't stand a chance. They have no shooting, most of them are slow, and the good save doesn't save them if you put enough attacks or some rend on them. Shadowstrike, Thunderquake, Sunclaw, even a buffed up Firelance can stop them.
I fear them in small games (500-1000 points) but even then I win most of the time.
Their bravery is also a problem. If you play a Troglodon and/or a Carnosaur and/or bring some Saurus banners they lose a lot of models in battleshock. No save or good wounds value will protect them from that.

He is exactly right. My worst match ups by far are : SCE ( +1 cover item -> mostof the army 2+ rerollable) which are nerfed atm so not such a problem BUT
    1) Mixed Order : Phoenixes 2+ if not 1+ save that return wounds with Sister of Thorn spell and 4+ invu afterwards.
    2) Sylvaneth. Everything has 2+ save - reroll 1s from command ability that is global due to Kurnoths and Kurnoths reroll everything..

We have no rend and no MW output in the majority of our army. So yeah, these are the ones I struggle the most by far !

Great input regarding the Carnosaur’s bloodroar as a tool for taking down elite infantry. Definitely something I need to keep in mind for furture games!
