Hello there and welcome to the Trials of the Old Ones, rules are just below.

A similar threads on another forum I use has had a great effect in helping inspire people with both sculpting and painting, so I thought it might be worth putting it on here.

The way it works is simple, you post links to awesome paint jobs, sculpts and conversions that you find and hopefully other people might post outstanding pieces of work that you've never seen before and get you inspired.

I'll start things off with two I really like.

The beauty of them are neither are GW work, but both have really given me some awesome sculpt ideas and designs.

This one was more about the ornaments and the weapon design.

    BONUS:
This would make an awesome old blood shield.

    Good find, Rikard.

Makes me want to take the pencils out and get artsy.

    But I know I won't.

I found a picture of a bastiladon on FLKR. I think this guy did an awesome job, and it actually inspired me to try and do the same on my own basti. While I couldn't replicate it entirely, I am very pleased with the result.

I cannot show the image here, but this is the link to FLKR:

    Some nice finds,

I've got some other bits and pieces, but thought I'd ask in case anyone else has found some nice work.

As per the big tutorial sticky, here is a nice update and a secondary purpose for this thread.

    Trials of the Old Ones.
I'm going to opt for a once a month event at the moment as I don't want to get ahead of myself.
    The rules are very simple.

    RULES:
    1. Anyone can enter, or drop out and even re-enter at any stage of the these challenges, you could for example take part in challenge 1, drop out of challenge 2 (for any reason you like, you don't need to give warning, or even a reason at all, we all have lives offline and work) and then pop back in for challenge 3, or even 6!
    2. If you wanted to try your hand at a challenge that was finished long ago, but couldn't at the time, that's fine, I'd encourage all of you to have a stab at an old challenge, even if it ends up being years old.
    3. There are no prizes, my time is stretched way beyond the abilities to award and make prizes on a monthly basis, that's what the sculpting and conversion contests are for.
    4. Don't panic, these challenges will be relatively easy even if you have no experience with puttys.
    5. Ask questions, not sure on something, or need a few pointers to help get you started? That's why this topic (and the green stuff woes thread) exist.
So with that all said, here is your first challenge... Quetzl...

Your challenge is simple, you will convert a saurus of your choice (champion, car vet, old blood or even special character) and give him some new scales worthy of the blessings of Quetzl.
    • You do NOT have to change all of his scales.
    • You do NOT have to cover skin that doesn't have scales on them.
    • You may use an older or OOP, or even non GW lizardman for this task.
Below is the model I will be working on with my demonstration.
I will be adding new scales to the head creat and changing the larger spikes down his back.

You have until the end of June to complete your work (that is to say I will be posting my work for this challenge on the 1st of July).

Cool idea! I might join in if i find a surus or I might just do bigger scales on a skink it feels like it might be in line with the theme of the challange.

If you have no suitable saurus, use a skink, or even a kroxigor if you have one. :)

Had to look this up, my warhammer old ones lore is not up to par. I think most of my army could go under this one. Hammer bros. With turtle shells. Even a few with spikes on the shells.

@Bowser , what did your research turn up? I do remember there were sacred spawnings: Sotek, Tzunki, and the others...but it's been so long. Is Quetzl all about extra spikes?

@pendrake I found this site that explains a little on the old ones each known one and gives useful info about their colour representation and some features they instill in their spawnlings - http://warhammeronline.wikia.com/wiki/The_Old_Ones

Edit: Rigg is particular interesting seems gender comes into play and is an outcast :D maybe mother nature or something :p

I miss this so much about 6th ed...
Unit with one spawning became special, two made it a rare.
    Scar vets could take 2
    Old bloods could take 3
Priests could take 1, but limited to sotek and tepok (I think).
    Slann couldn't.

Sotek = + 1 attack on the charge (red crest skinks got extra bonuses)
Chotec = roll 3D6 and pick the highest 2 for pursuits (think it was charges too)
    Tlazcotl = immune to psychology
    Tzunki = Aquatic rule
Huanchi = move through woods + forest without penalty.
Queztl = + 1 to armour saves (the ever popular -1 armour save cold one + old blood/scar vet, you had a 2+ armour save against strength 6 hits)
scaly skin 5+, with quetzl, 4+, light armour 3+, cold one 1+, enchanted shield (+2 to your armour save, gave you a -1 armour save.
Tepok = unit or character increases your dispell pool by 1 die.
Itzl = may ride cold one or carno.
Old Ones = you may re-roll D3 die for that character through out the game (armour saves, hits, wounds, wards, etc)

Pretty much thick scales and extra spikes, the god of defensive warfare, sort of. Another forum asked the very question how to do it, the skinks would have thicker scales or scales made of bone like an exoskeleton almost, the saurus back spikes would be more pronounced or a combination of the two, depending on how blessed the spawning is/How much you want to do with the model.

Bingo, not really fussed on specifics with regards to styles or the minis used (though if you have the old blood above, it might make it easier to gauge ideas and stages), it's more of this whole "having a go as you may well surprise yourself" thingy.

The cold one and rider I'm doing for the Golden serpent is having the neck, tail, stomach area made thicker and I will be trying to add scale detail could this do for the challenge?

I´d also join up if my big stegadon is allowed. Still need to do lots of scale work and would benefit of this "push" ;)
