what are some good ways to store large models?

    On shelves. Displayed.

    For transport: building them so they can be disassembled is helpful. If the howdah is separate the transport box can be more compact. Banners and standards that unhook are a good idea.

    Anything that lets the overall shape be more compact and less awkward will help with safe storage for travel and breakage prevention.

    Stick some magnets under the base, then use an old metal biscuit tin or similar.
