I certainly worry about that as well. Many people I play with build their armies one new unit purchase at a time over a period of years...i'd hate to see my favorite new wood elf player who only has a starting 600 point army to be forced to spend hundreds of bucks too soon due to potential model ranges being phased out in quick succession.

Ironically, I actually stopped my wood elf army altogether after the Khaine book, it might not have been a true squatting of the army, but it was close enough to make me skeptical of their future. This is a bit of a shame in many ways as it means that although I haven't sold any of them (tons of metal treekin, way watchers, etc), it does mean that unless the AOS leaves the end times rendered fairly moot, I'm incredibly unlikely to start them again.

There's a group called "Oldhammer" on Facebook, an awesome group with members going way back (most to 3rd or even 1st edition, heh, kind of feels like I'm talking about Slann), they seemed far less than impressed with the release and statements, although you didn't get the typical angst you might find on other sites, a number of them took offence to the "the end time battles are nothing compared to what is to come".

Mainly because this seemed rather rather patronising at best, as though the last 30+ years of warhammer are inconsequential and irrelevant. At worst it seemed to many that it was a "everything you know and love is getting thrown out, rather than re-written, here is a brand new system you WILL need.

I will also say here, that the negativity did differentiate itself as they didn't throw out insults or bring out the whine and cheese board, but put together constructive, nostalgia driven arguments as to how they felt about it all. The biggest proof of the pudding on this was that many said they will go back to playing 3rd or even 2nd edition.

Can't say the prospect of using 5th edition when my Stegadon had strength 7 attacks isn't a little tempting....
Although I'd be happy going back to 6th ed too.

How does the Oldhammer group decide which edition is used for a given game? Do they stage events where FREX, 3rd edition Empire goes against 5th edition Orcs?

They won't go back, and neither will you.

It's fun to think about old systems, but they almost never enjoy any meaningful participation once consigned to oblivion.

I have no idea to be honest, I know there are groups/gaming clubs that do use older editions or warhammer (one in particular uses 4th ed).

@Sleboda, I wouldn't mind if the guys in my local group are up for it, I quite enjoyed 5th and 6th, though my comment was made more from nostalgia's sake, not disappointment.

See, I was wondering if, when playing Oldhammer, a Lizardman army could be chosen that had a:

    5th edition Cold One unit
    a
    6th edition Steggy
    and a
8th edition Ancient Steggy? Or some other time traveling mix.

To do that there would almost have to be a rules committee that re-calculated the point values for each version of a creature, e.g:
    4th edition Steg = 287 points
    5th edition Steg = 312 points
    6th edition Steg = 234 points
    and so on...

The way I've done it (and I believe the same applies to all the Oldhammer crew) is if you play 5th edition, you only use 5th edition army books/rule books. So obviously no carnosaurs, spawnings, or old bloods.

You don't get to pick and mix.

You perfectly illustrate why stuff dies without a central point of authority. No leadership = fractures = death of system.

The people who play warhammer need to get their act together then.

What army did you field in the way-back-when of the before-time?

So anyway Steggys --- more like this then:

    5th edition Steg = 305 points
    6th edition Steg = 306 points
    7th edition Steg = 371 points (ballista)
    7th edition Steg = 378 points (blowpipes)
    8th edition Steg = 381 points (ballista)
    8th edition Steg = 385 points (engyne)
    8th edition Steg = 388 points (ancient / blowpipes)

The numbers are fake, pulled out of a hat, made up. But, something along those lines needs to happen for Oldhammer to stick around. It needs to incorporate all the lost models, from as much of the history of the game as can be preserved. Forget quibbling over what version to use, instead fold them all into something bigger:

    Ultrahammer

In this setting, do the Ultramarines get +1 when rolling for deployment or something?

    No.

I am just really bad at coming up with a name (for an independently curated fantasy warhammer-ish ruleset...):meh:
    ALThammer
    ALLhammer
    Warhammer428
    Obsoletehammer
    ?

But until the playing community organizes and decides it is going to CONTROL the game rules and regulate the points balance system it is going to remain at the mercy of figure maker. The things people complain about++ trace back to the figure maker using the rules to :greedy: drive and influence sales rates.

++imbalances, obsoleted figures and regiments, unfair combinations, unbeatable models, marginally useless models...

But, yea some sort of Nth edition rules to combine and balance all previous models and rule editions.

I didn't :( I started in 5th. But we used to be frog-men with lobotomized human slaves in the way-back-when. What a huge change from that to 5th edition with the LM as we know them today. I'd very much like to get a couple of the old models just to say I own them.

Back to the rumors! (my self-imposed embargo is over because [bleep] it)

June 26th is tomorrow (or for some of you, maybe already here!). The rulebooks will all go away very soon. This is The End and I'm scared D: :vamp::walkingdead:

GW website says now "Death Begets Death. Endings Beget Beginnings." The cruelly ambiguous taunting continues.

Then there's this new madness about free rules (which would totally blow my mind and be awesome, though I'm uneasy about rules being only four pages, and unsure about the authenticity of these screenshots, and so on): http://natfka.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-first-leaks-age-of-sigmar-free-rules.html

Addendum of Speculation: If the AoS rules are indeed only 4 pages long I would be way surprised if AoS was the only replacement for WFB as we know it. I would take this as enhancing the likelihood that other post-WFB products will come (hopefully soon).

I think Sleboda is correct, without a central authority it is difficult to maintain a unified vision and set of rules. Without a "neutral" authority figure, how do you get players to agree? Updated rules would have to come from some sort of greater organization/group. It can't just come from the players, because it is difficult to eliminate bias.... "Carnosaurs are apex predators, thus they should have X, Y & Z", etc. I do think that there is a bit of hope... ETC and Swedish comp are examples of rules systems/alterations that are widely accepted by a large percentage of players. That is the template that must be applied if control is to be removed from GW.
