Slann/lord Kroak, astrolith bearer Starseer Chameleonsx15, rippers, and a priest Bastiladon Razordons and kroxigor Stegadon Pretty well in that order. I know Kroak works best in a defensive army but comet just makes your wrriors that much more effective. But choose either or both! Depending on your budget. Razordons Kroxigor and Knights all moving together along with 2 carnos on your table or a carno and a bastiladon works as a great distraction and can be devastating. The krox work with the skink handlers to reroll 1s on wound rolls, the razors shoot and soften up before the knights and krox charge in. Works really well against big blocks and big tough monsters.
That actually sounds really good! Is that what you run? How many Knights do you use? So of all the Slann options, you'd go for Lord Kroak?
Kroak for an aggressive army, slann for a defensive army, reason I say this your slann will die fast if he is not protected and the best units for thst sre guards and an eternity warden which are defensive. Kroak still needs orotection but not like a slann
Absolutely not, a Slann is borderline useless in a defensive army. You want it the other way around, the more supportive Starmaster in an aggressive army so you can properly buff your legions. In a defensive army, then you go Kroak because he functions much like a Dwarf cannon and, if surrounded, can tear people up with Celestial Deliverance, a spell that is lost in an Aggressive army as he would lack the protection to get close enough to really use it while he'd have nothing but protection in a Defensive army. Furthermore a large part of many aggressive armies is summoning, which the Starmaster is just better at. An Eternity Warden and terrain cover will protect the Starmaster fine.
If I am playing dwarfs that's what I run! I choose Kroak over regular slann just for the comet call. Wounds anywhere on the board can be a game changer. Kroak 7 wounds Astrolith 6 wounds 3x 6 knights 36 wounds 2x scar vet on cold one 14 wounds Kroxigor 12 wounds 2x razordon w 4handlers 10 wounds Old blood on carno 12 wounds 3x5 chameleons 15 wounds Priest 4 wounds Rippers 9 wounds Shadowstrike host 125 wound total
As Bainbow already pointed out, it's more the opposite: Kroak for defence, Slann for offence. But let say you want an aggressive Kroak. The only way you can use Kroak in a more aggressive way than a Slann, is if you don't want to buff your army, but you want to win with instadeath summons (like 4 units of Sallies at fire range). If so, an additional summon can help.
@Bainbow @Killer Angel Told you I was a novice, playing against a 9 year old does have a negative side!
Ok so I'm thinking: Starting set £50. x2 boxes of knights or warriors £40 or £46 respectively. Slann Starmaster £30 x2 boxes of Razordon £37. Thats a little over budget, however, I'm willing to spend that if its a good purchase. What do you guys think? Is this a good way to spend my first £150 or are there better ways to start collection Seraphon? I'll be able to add new things every month so my force should increase quickly.
When you run an aggressive army which do you use: warriors or knights? In your experience would you say running an aggressive or defensive army is best? Also is having a lot of shooting in the army needed?
The only issue I have with that is (am I right in thinking) it would give me next to no shooting? However, is shooting a necessary part of the army?
As you said you are able to afford new troops every month, i would suggest to leave the shooting for the next round of purchase...
Shooting is mandatory. A good half (even more) of the killing, can be done by shooting. .. and our shooting is solid. Regarding defense - offense, it depends on your play style, but must be said that we have some of the strongest defensive units in all AoS (Bastiladon, temple guards in formation, Lord Kroak...)
Aggressive and defensive are rather equal, it's more about the people playing them than any inherent superiority. On the face of it, it would go Warriors<Guard<Knights<Skinks<Warriors, but individual players can add wild cards in the form of supporting units and just general tactics, so it's not too hard to turn the tables on an army that has an advantage over you if you're prepared. As for shooting, it's necessary but you don't need a lot of it. I get by on just some Chameleons and a Bastiladon for a lot of games. A lot of our shooting has few shooters but high power.
Although I said I'd prefer an offensive army. Just out of curiosity what would a defensive army look like? Is it mainly a lot of guard, Lord Kroak and Bastiladon making up the backbone? Does a Saurus Oldblood On Carnosaur fit into a defensive style army? Finally if I decide I'd rather play defensive is there still value in getting the Start Collecting! Seraphon set? Or is that a waste of money?
