I'm starting to get enough stuff that I'm starting to need a proper storage space. Also I'm running into issues with respect to a play-area. My dinner table is slightly on the small side, and well, I'd like to actually have dinner on it some times. Which means I frequently end up just using the floor, but this isn't exactly optimal either.

Unfortunatly I have rather limited space. I currently live with my girlfriend in a 2 bedroom appartement, the second bedroom is mostly occupied by drying laundry and my girlfriends desk for some arts & crafts or sewing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for these two issues?
 
Folding board you can store away when not in use, sit on the dinner table then simply put away.

Were the same but we just use the table which is around 6*3 so a good size.
 
mm, had not thought of a folding board yet. That does seem somewhat viable, especially since it can be a tad larger than the table without creating issues. Where do you get something like that? Also, is it viable to put some basic scenery in the board? E.g. some minor heightdifferences Or is it too prone too damaging if you try that?

It still leaves the issue of where to keep my models though.
 
We just used a 4×8 white board set on the kitchen table, that way we could draw on rivers and write down different terrain features beside the buildings or terrain, like deadly or mystical, etc. It made it easier for people to reference, especially new players when we were teaching them. Or if nobody felt like setting up terrain we could draw on a big blov for forest, water, building, what ever.
 
A whiteboard seems like kind of a hilarious solution. Though part of me also wants to make a complicated board.. if only I had space :p

My models are in plastic towers with drawers, when we play we just take the drawer out with the models in, scenery is kept in the same system.

I looked at getting some 2*2 ft trays made at work and making 8 boards, I've started 1 which is a temple and occupies the full board but I need to finish my models first.
 
mm, I suppose Il go for that approach too. IT seems to be most viable currently. Now let's see if I can convince my parents' Carpenter friends to build me a folding table surface of sufficient size :P

Just get an 12/15mm MDF board cut it in half and the use a piano hinge, recess the hinge so it fits flush when opened, job done.
 
I would then reinforce the sides with some 1/2"x1" wood.
to keep the dice on the table and to keep your sheet from warping If it isn't MDF.

I have basicly no tools (or well, I have a hammer, some screwdrivers and maybe a wrench...) and I am utterly incapable with my hands. It's a miracle I'm managing to put together the models. Ah well, maybe I should try and learn, make my dad proud I'm finally learning how to do something more than change a lightbulb after living on my own for 6 years or so :P

You sound just like my brother in law, when we go to their house he asks me to take my tools so I can sort stuff for him jobs have included, changing light bulbs, fuses in plugs and the best one fitting some skirting board he had tried but put it on upside down, I kid you not......

Well, at least that much I can do. My dad will be proud knowing it could be worse :D

Is lumber measured in metric or imperial where you live?
Do you have any rare earth magnets?
How big is the dining room table? (...and what shape?)
Are you going for a 4x6 foot playing area?

At a minimum you'll need a drill and a small saw...

If the piano hinge is on the bottom when the table is unfolded the hinge cylinder sticks out a bit. And it scratches up the table surface. (I have heard tell that girlfriends hate that.o_O )

A hinge that will mount flush on the top surface of a folding table will look like this:

And it helps to be a 2nd or 3rd level carpenter to install one.
 
Metric, and worst case I can borrow my dad's tools. But I'm starting to need to have my own anyways so might as well look if I can find some on sale, would need to go to the DIY shop anyway to get materials.

I have no magnets.

I'l take a look at the size tonight when I get home. It's rectangular.
As large as I can manage, and I doubt I can manae larger than 4x6.
