The indexes were always advertised as a stop gap to get the rules for models out..

Happy about codexes, 10 before the end of the year is decent, just hope they make good decisions about which ones to bring out.

I´m hoping they release the tyranids codex soon so I don´t have to get the index, but I think that won´t be the case. I actually expect them to be released after Christmas, which is even worse :joyful::argh::argh::argh:

I think I made some progress pondering what to play in 40k now... Slaanesh demons with Dark Mechanicus. Covers all the bases, has demons, weird demon boobs, and technology.

Plus and legit black and purple colour scheme.

The first 4 codex's will be Speaash mharreneis, G(r)ay knights, Chaos spacemarines amd the sons of Mortarion.

The codex's will follow standard codex format, nothing really new besides updated lore and the stratagems. Many codex's will have rules for sup-groups within their faction, not a really new thing, space marines have had that for while, but a very welcome addition.

I don't think so, unless you play multible Chapters. Blood angles are a very different chapter, together with the Space wolves and Dark Angles, and have had their own unique codex for quite a few editions. I do think it will take a while before they realese a Blood angles codex, though.

Some chapters are very unique, they have unique units and rules which only they can use, and so they can milk the most money out of the spacemarines.

Pretty sure the community site said that BA, DA & SW are getting their own books and won't need to main SM book. Can't view it at work so not 100% sure.

I've been thinking a lot about this whole codex thing and I think the problem (for me at least) was I had a preconceived notion of what I wanted to happen based on exactly zero evidence, and got disappointed that they didn't go down that path. I really like Stratagems and the Command Point system and think introducing army-specific ones will make the game a lot more interesting, and having an expanded list of psychic powers will take care of my main beef with the psychic phase in general.

I'm wary about relics and warlord traits though. I don't want to end up with a bunch of unusable trash and 1 or 2 auto includes like 6th/7th. GW is really good at making up cool things, but they're really bad at making a list of equally viable options.

It's interesting that they've singled out Death Guard for their own codex and given the reasoning that their way of combat is different from the other legions, while in backgroud they've always been described as super-tough footslogging boltermarines, which is pretty similar to Iron Warriors. I suppose there is a lot of room to explore chemical weapons, zombie plagues and all that nasty stuff, but out of all the Legions the Thousand Sons have definitely been the standout for being a totally unique method of warfare (showcased in the Wrath of Magnus campaign book). I really hope the 'Sons get their own codex rather than being shoehorned into the main Chaos Marine one.

So my dark Mech army kicked all kinds of ass today.

Got so many conversion ideas for it, I need to write them all down.

Yawn...Space Marines and Chaos Marines are getting all the glory as usual...

This is one of the many reasons why I dislike 8th Edition...

Despite the fact that this is also most annoying to me, it doesn´t make much sense to hate only 8th ed for this. You should hate wh 40k in general instead.
They have been doing this forever

Not really - It was only in 6th Ed that they started releasing box sets with Imperium vs Chaos (with the rubbishy Dark Vengeance) and the reason I hold 8th responsible is because I was expecting (and hoping) GW to do something different. In fact I think Dark Imperium is worse because they specifically released Death Guard, and I dislike Nurgle marines the most because they all look disgusting. At least the CSM in Dark Vengeance could be painted up to be from any chapter. And once again the CSM are the horde army because they have loads of Nurgle Cultists and only a few elites - practically the same as Dark Vengeance except for Nurgle marines and Ultramarines instead of plain CSM and Dark Angels. Certainly Chaos didn't have all the glory until the rubbish known as the Gathering Storm that mostly featured Chaos and Imperium. I also hate how GW say that Dark Imperium is the 'Ultimate' 40K box set. The Ultimate 40K set wouldn't have Imperium vs Chaos - it would have an interesting pairing of armies, say Imperial Guard vs Tyranids (e.g. A load of Guardsmen, a Chimera and a Sentinel against some Warriors, a Carnifex and perhaps a small group of Genestealers) or Craftworld Eldar (NOT 'Aeldari') vs Necrons or Dark Eldar (NOT 'Drukhari') vs Tau. Something like that, with a 'good' race vs an 'evil' race but an interesting combo.

And the storyline in 8th is primarily Imperium vs Chaos rather than Imperium vs everyone like it was in all editions before 7th.

Certainly I feel 8th Ed is overrated.

Pretty much. GW is all about Space Marines of all variants (Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Stormcast Eternals). That's one of the reasons I like fantasy, none of this nonsense.

Chaos vs. Imperium as a primary story has been around for a long time. The 13th Black Crusade global campaign back in summer of '04 (Wow, that long ago?) featured Imperium vs. Chaos, though other races got to play. I know my Tyranids rampaged over a lot of battle fields that summer.

But, yes. I'd have preferred a different set of opponents for the Dark Imperium box. It still won't stop me from buying one, though...

That's not the only similarity. The armies are basically the same across all the Starter Sets - including Age of Sigmar's Starter Set and Spire of Dawn. The good guys have a major leader (Lord-Celestant, Space Marine Captain, High Warden), a banner bearing second in command (Lord Relictor, Space Marine Ancient, Archmage), a small team of fast attackers (Prosecutors, Inceptors, Reavers), some elite infantry (Retributors, Hellblasters, Swordmasters) and ten of their standard infantry (Liberators, Intercessors, Spireguard).

The bad guys have a main leader too (Mighty Lord of Khorne, Lord of Contagion, Skaven Warlord), a buffing second in command (Bloodsecrator, Noxious Blightbringer, Warlock Engineer), a hero who encourages the standard troops (Bloodstoker, Malignant Plaguecaster, Packmaster), a monster (Khorgarath, Foetid Bloat-drone, Rat Ogres), some elite troops (Blood Warriors, Plague Marines, Skaven Weapon Teams) and a horde of basic infantry (Bloodreavers, Pox Walkers, Clanrats).

You can see the equivalents as well in the Dark Vengeance Starter Set as well. It's a set formula they use for their Starter Sets, and it doesn't seem likely to change, as they seem to have the formula nailed (at least according to their expert opinions it seems). It does allow for two separate play styles and means a balanced battle. But it's kind of funny how all the Starter Sets are the same set just reskinned.

So, they're bringing out some new box sets. Which look quite good, with 2 squads for each side, plus complete basic rules, missions, a painting guide, fluff, a gaming mat, a terrain piece, datasheets for the models, 6 dice and a ruler for $55 AUD, as well as an expanded pack with some more models, a bigger mat and a longer ruler for $100 AUD. (Seriously? Has GW completely gone uninsane and realised that most people don't buy figures if they're horribly overpriced?)

But the new command figures are horrible. $60 AUD for a Librarian who looks like he's stoned out of his helmet/chaneling Yoda? No thanks. (He looks a bit better with the helmet on, but still not enough to justify that kind of price tag).

I don't think Stormcast are so bad because while you could show the Space Marines are evil nationalists and the Chaos Space Marines are obviously even more evil, the Stormcast are true 'goodies'.

I am currently writing an unofficial army book to play around with them in Fantasy as a second 'monstrous' army after Ogres, because it would be interesting to see them team up with Lizardmen, Elves or Dwarfs to sort out some Greenskins or Skaven, along with ones for a more original rework of Tilea and also Albion.

    Exactly!
I have not been long in this hobby (just 7 years in fact), so I´d say I can´t make the kind of statements of "GW has been doing ... for ever", but for the short period of time I have been around, all starter sets have included space marines. Every edition since 5th (I think it was, with the black reach boxset) has been space marines vs sth. I really wish they did some boxset, even if it´s one like spire of dawn for AoS/Fantasy, where they include other armies that are not SM related.

But I think that "structure" you say is actually beneficial. If it´s a starter set the rules for the included models need to be relatively simple, but also difficult enough so you get a taste of the game. You could´t have a starter set (I mean the actual starter sets, not the small ones) with all infantry, because that person wouldn't´t get a feel of the game, but you can´t include all flying monsters with tons of special rules because then the people will end up getting fed up with the "overly complicated" game.
Now that we have 8th ed, they could try to change this though. They´ve been saying that now all units work more or less the same way (except monsters and vehicles losing efficiency as they get damaged), so they could act accordingly and include some new kinds of units that aren´t usually seen in starter sets.
But then again on the other hand you could also say that if the started box comes with the "juicy" stuff (because every one wants the big stuff in his/her army :p) at a discount price people wouldn't be so keen on buying the big expensive kits. This is why, as much as it annoys me, I think that the fact that they made the "renegade" game boxset a limited edition (or available for a limited time) makes sense economically. You can just see what would have happened by comparing our carnosaur with the start collecting lizardmen. You must really be in a hurry (not to say something worse) not to notice that for the same price you get double the value.
Which gets me to the point that I don't think they´ll change that starter-set format

Definitely. They are very good-looking models, but not at that price :joyful:

I wasn't commenting on their ethical standing and beliefs within their respective lores. My only point is that GW tends to over focus on Space Marine factions to such a degree that it becomes nauseating for the average hobbyist. How many of the 40k releases are related to one variant of Space Marine or another and by the same token, how many of the AoS releases are related to Stormcast Eternals. We're constantly bombarded by these factions while other armies are left wanting.
