In Warhammer I thought Cavalry was anything on a regulation 24x50 Cavalry Base. ( Which ...I know... defies any dictionary definition. )

Not necessarily. War beasts such as Chaos Warhounds also use the cavalry base.

If a war beast is mounted then it does become cavalry.

Hmm my conversion obsession is kicking in, I’ve always hated the ‘newest’ saurus cav units (the mounts look daft - the old chunky ones were cool, but also dark elves have them...and better ones I may add)

So I’m thinking of making my own while keeping with the reptilian style, what pops to mind is big ass snakes, now that would be cool.
    Think it’s worth a go?

I never knew Warbeast was a separate troop type. :wideyed::writing: (I only ran Chaos Hounds once. They did pretty well in that list though. They really messed up a Skaven Army in a tournament.)

A nice cheap chaff unit. I always include them in my Chaos army lists.

That’s exactly what I did with them! I had five units of them. The Skaven player had four units of tiny rats? rat slaves? I forget the exact term, cheap disposable guys 20 points gets you 40 or so? Those guys.

He rushed them forward to lure out my heavy combat units, he had them spaced out across the table. I think his plan was to let my units charge them, they would flee, and either escape or get run over. And then my high points units would be sitting ducks for the Lightning cannon (two of them) and other Skaven shooting.

I did get shot at on turn one because he got to go first. But then in the bottom of turn one I wrecked his battleplan. I sent all five of my hound units into the gaps left in between all his cheapo rats. My bigger stuff advanced to one inch of the cheap rats and stopped.

On my left flank, I had a unit of skirmisher Beastmen rushing headlong toward his right corner lightning cannon.

On turn two, when he was hoping to be blasting away, he had no targets!

Nine units of cheap stuff waving at each other as they rushed forward going opposite directions filled that table with a meat shield wall.

Ultimately, those Beastmen made it to that cannon and mince-meated the crew. The other cannon managed to explode on turn 3 or 4. And once my Hounds were past the tiny rats they went hunting for rattling guns and warp fire throwers.

(It turned out to be a bad day to be a rat.)

You're thinking of skaven slaves two points a piece.

The alternative is giant rats which were a pack of dog sized rats with a single skaven Handler / 6

Yep. The Giant Rats taken in that manner are commonly known as Rat Darts. Something like 23 points? If you're playing a 2500 pt game? That ain't much!

The slaves make for a great tarpit, since you can shoot them with your own cannons! And when they flee? They blow up! (Their owners have explosive collars around their necks or something.) Sooooo....not sure you played that one correctly since they can be shot by their own army. That may just be when they are in close combat though. I'll have to check that one out.

*I take that back. The book does indeed say that they can be targeted when in close combat with an enemy unit. And since you stopped 1" away, I suppose they technically couldn't fire on them.*

    Yes. ^ This.

I was well aware. Clueless about other things, but I realized those rats were more valuable to me as a screen than they’d have been if I killed them.

Are you sure there was no unit that one point for two models?

Something in 8th Edition was half a point. (But the game I am remembering was most likely 6th Ed.)

Clanrats had weapon options (spears, shields)that were 1/2 point/model. The same is true for Skavenslaves who could access spears, slings and shields for 1/2 a model.

Goblins from the Orcs & Goblins book also had access to shields, spears and short bows at 1/2 point per model.
