Fully agreed. I've been trying to point out the misguided notion of free AoS rules right from the start. Kudos to GW for pulling it off though.

There are several warscrolls that say "any number of models" or state increments/minimum model sizes that are different.
Matched play unit sizes override those things on the warscrolls. So those aren't typos but they aren't meant for matched play either.
Dryads have mimimum of 5 on their warscroll and 10 in matched play, and Razordons have "any number" on their warscroll but max 4 in matched play.

As long as the rules changes have that quality I'll happily pay every year. Both GHBs were well worth their money.

But then the great thing is you really don't have to pay to learn to play the game.
At least the basic rules are really available for free. And that's way better for beginners.

Quite looking forward to what happens. With the whole any number models, I have noticed the minimum and maximum with previous warscrolls being different when compared to the handbook also.
Been trying to get others to join the hobby but I can't seem to make them budge, even when telling them that there is free rules and that.

Unless things will change with the new rules, i think this is the most sensible interpretation.

True, but keep in mind that previous box sets such as The Battle For Skull Pass contained the entire rule set alongside of two small armies for around $75 CAD (I could be off slightly, it was a long time ago, but the figure is fairly close). Admittedly, one did have to then go out and drop another $35 for the army book.

You technically don't have to own any of the books too play the game, all rules are free and the books just give a more coherent and complex way too play.

The core rulebook, that comes with the new box, will contain mostly lore and world building, and from an interview with some of the design team, it looks like they're going all in on fleshing out the setting of AoS. The book will of course come with rules and the like.

I loved Battle for Skull Pass. It's probably the last GW box set where I painted all the models.

For the new one, I'm probably going to buy the main rule book, the generals handbook, and the Malign Sorcery box. I don't play either army, so I have no reason to buy the box.

Does that mean that the point values are available for free now? I was under the impression that you had to get the GHB for that... of course I don't follow AoS too closely so I could be mistaken.

They are available for free in the warscroll builder, yes.

But then remember that AoS doesn't even need points in its simplest form (open play).
Sure, not the play style for me but for that one really nothing except the Warscrolls and the four pages of rules is required.

That's fair enough. So what is the point of the GHB?

I don't really count that as a complete game though. No points makes no sense. To be honest, if AoS would not have introduced points into the game, it would have likely have failed.

However, as you pointed out, the warscroll builder gives you the points for free, so you can essentially access AoS rules for no cost.

Battle for Skull Pass was THE best Warhammer boxed game. It was what first got me into the hobby. It gave you far more minis, the entire ruleset without the bulk of the main rulebook and some small scenery pieces for only £50, about half the price of the new boxed games in their largest size and the same cost as the shrunken version. You did have to buy the army book but that was a once-only purchase, at least until the next edition came out. The 7th Edition Dwarf book was £20 and the 8th Edition one was £30, but that only made a total investment in books of £50 for that army over 6 years for me (I started in 2008 and the 8th Edition Dwarf book came out in 2014). Compare this then to £20 a year for the General’s Handbook, which for the same length of time would cost me £120, albeit I probably would be starting without the boxed game for AoS. It’s still probably the one thing that’s keeping me from starting AoS at the moment. The idea of having to spend £20 a year just to account for minor rules changes...

As others have said you can use an army’s points values for free on Warscroll builder, but for the most part you would need a General’s Handbook as well for Allegiance Abilities and the like, certainly I would if I wanted to start Fyreslayers.

On the last item, I think the rules for all the spells with models will be packaged with said models. The spells based on the Realms will probably be in the GHB.

I agree that it was quite cost effective by GW standards. The Battle for Skull Pass was the only starter box I ever purchased for fantasy (I also picked up the Battle for Macragge box set for 40k many years prior).

I'd be curious what the average AoS player pays for rules. Many of the rules are free, but I'm sure GW still manages to sell a lot of AoS rule books. It's definitely a different sales strategy than they had employed previously but I'm sure it must end up being more profitable for them in the long run.

Available in the app and in a PDF.
Here, in case you want to read them: https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/PDF/AoS_Compendiums/warhammer-aos-scenery-en.pdf

The main reason for buying the GHB are allegiance abilities (artefacts, spells and so on) for the armies that don't have them in their old Battletomes (like Seraphon) or don't have Battletomes (like Brayherd).

And of course the fluff. Half of the book is fluff and there are some nice things in there. I enjoyed reading that quite a lot.

For every army in my collection I have bought the army book, warscrolls, so I have spent £200ish on just them but I want to buy them.

I will buy the GHB every year it's fantastic value for money, when I was a kid I bought the Dandy Annual and The Guinness book of records every year so too me it's the same thing just the book has changed.
