It's an april's fool that could become reality in a matter of a bunch of years...

What’s wrong with that? I understand that it would be extremely annoying if it intruded on the trilogy, but if they released it afterwards as its own separate thing, would that not be a good thing for all us AoS fans?

there's nothing wrong with it. I was stating the fact that, ATM, it was an april's fool… but it could turn true within some year. which is not a fact, but it's a probability.

Nobody hates AoS more than me (well maybe somebody does), but even I don't see anything wrong with it. If it was to replace the third installment of the Warhammer trilogy it would be a different story, but as a standalone or sequel series there is nothing wrong with it. I of course won't play it, but I'm sure it will make many AoS fans very happy and make the company a tidy profit!

What Nightbringer said . If they just skipped out on the third installment, it'd feel like the Bretonnians treatment all over again .
Once they're done with the WHFB trilogy, AoS is the next logical step for games like that. I wonder if they'll move to a more skirmish style of play though? AoS style doesn't really seem to jive too well with Total War style. 8th edition seemed perfect for it .

I'd honestly expect AoS strategy games to play out more like a Mordheim-esque war band type game than a Total War game.

I don’t mind the idea at all as long as they release Warhammer III Total War first, as most of you have already said. As long as they complete the expected Warhammer Fantasy Trilogy (and include some focus on factions other than Chaos in III), I honestly wouldn’t mind at all. In fact it would make sense to do an AoS Total War after the Fantasy trilogy as AoS follows on from Fantasy in lore, and would also attract the AoS player base as others have also said.

Whether I would consider playing it is a different matter - I would show interest in playing it if either the playable races on release didn’t include Stormcast or Sylvaneth, included a playable Greenskin Destruction faction or featured Skaven as the Chaos faction (assuming that AoS Total War would have 1 Order, 1 Destruction, 1 Death and 1 Chaos faction playable on release). Warhammer I Total War has 2 factions I’m interested in (Dwarfs and Greenskins) plus some DLC ones (Bretonnia, Wood Elves and Beastmen). Warhammer II has another 3 I would consider playing (Lizardmen, High Elves and Skaven) plus another DLC one (Tomb Kings). Similarly I would only consider playing AoS Total War if there was at least one faction interesting to me in the initial release, otherwise I wouldn’t give my time or money to it.

Indeed I would actually have preferred it in Warhammer I and II if they had just released all the factions they were going to do on launch, rather than forcing you to buy extra DLCs to get other specific factions you want to play, but I suppose that has come with being lured by the evil influence of Steam forcing you to sign up just to play the game if you bought it on disc. Anyway that’s something to grumble on about elsewhere.

The only concern would be how would they do a campaign map in AoS Total War, seeing as we have 8 different planets/planes of existence/worlds that make up the AoS battle environment? Would it be that it allows you to choose which Mortal Realm you want to fight in each time you play a campaign, or would there be some strange mechanic that allows you to select realmgate objects on the board to switch focus to different Mortal Realms mid-game?

I do think that might simply be impractical. The various factions differ rather much compared to a normal TW game and are fairly work intensive to make. That's not to say they couldn't have done a bit less dlc, stuff like the legendary lord dlc's that come with only 2 legendary lords are a bit bare-bones. But the ones with proper new factions feel fairly fair. It also helps that the vast majority of them didn't exist before the DLC to begin with. Unlike with say Rome II where you had DLC to unlock say athens, but athens was already a non playable faction and the DLC didn't even introduce a new army or somethign for athens. Putting all of that in the base game would probably mean the base game becomes far too big for development. The only difference with back in the old days before DLC you'd just get the expension on a disk and it'd give you 2-3 new factions for 20,- instead of 1 for 7,-..

Having said that, I do wish they'd find a way to Ensure "interesting' factions are available. Being forced to only play the everchosen mortals when you want say daemons is a tad lame.

I'd assume either realmgates exist and become natural chokepoints and strategic points of interest or the campaign would just be in 1 realm.

Yeah, the gaming possibilities for a TW AoS would be greater then the actual TW Warhammer, as you could have expansions with the various realms.

Well, Total War really has the potential to expand their scope even further with creating the End Times scenarios to play. I don't know if that'd be too much for a DLC packet or would need to be a stand alone game, but it WOULD make for a great way to end one series and transition to the AoS style and story, while keeping much of the Old World playable factions .

Then you won't be playing it. You know that SCE would be the first playable race.

I know, I know, I was just hoping that, on the off-chance CA aren't smitten with Stormcast and Space Marines like GW are, they might do something different. In any case, there may still be an interesting Destruction faction worth playing (Gloomspite Gitz perhaps?)

I'm sure GW will write the SCE inclusion straight into the contract.

GW actually has a tendency to let videogame developers do as they please which has resulted in some uhm, questionable content as well as some utterly genius stuff. Hell, for TW warhammer they're even free to make up their own stuff if they ever decide to include some of the less established factions (like ind, or nippon, or a proper borderprinces faction)

There is no way that Total War: AoS would release without SCE.
