Hello, I'm going to start AOS, and am unsure I'll pick seraphons. I'm kinda afraid of the costs of buying a full 1k army PLUS more units for summoning. So, is it possible/viable to play them without summoning (in meeting engagements)? Would this army be viable for a Meeting engagement: Saurus oldblood on carnosaur Saurus old/sun blood 10 knights 20 warriors 20 skinks Troglodon Total: 980 points This is basically 2 start collecting plus skinks (I'm aware of the guide for optimal start collecting use). I do realize it lacks magic and range, but am unsure how much of a bad thing this is.
I think I'm having a language barrier problem... do you mean SUMMONING? Invocations in game are the "endless spells" that the Fyreslayers have
wecome to the hobby i hope you have fun where ever you land. warriors should always be taken in 40 man units as their damage drops sharply when below 30 have a astrolith and a skink starpriest (that you can make with the start box) follow them around and they will eat people.i would run the following for a new player - Saurus old/sun blood on carnosaur - 5 knights - 5 knights - 40 warriors - astrolith bearer skink star priest Total: 970 points
buff the heck out of the 40 block and use the knights to take and hold objectives. your skink is your general casting starlight and using serpents staff and rituals to keep the warriors going. the carnasaur hunts down heroes and monsters.
Thanks for the reply I'm mostly interested in meeting engagement (the new 1000 points format), which puts restrictions, such as max unit size = 2 * min unit size. So the max size for a warrior unit is 20 in this format. Astrolith bearer is there for summoning right? That means I should buy more models... Is an army without summoning viable?
Astrolith bearer is there for rerolling hit rolls his summoning is secondary and only relay helpful if a slann is on the board. i am not famileir with meting engagements they relay arnt friendly to seraphon so you'll need someone else help with that but yes non summoning builds can be good fun if you aren't playing competitively the above list is my 1000 pointer and it can be great fun
outher mutch more expensive non summoning builds are shadow strike, fire lance, and razordons. all of witch can be found hear. http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/matched-play-list-ghb2019.23300/
If you want play Meeting Engagments without summoning these are the two list I recommend: Meeting Engagement: Double Carnosaur Allegiance: Seraphon - Mortal Realm: Ulgu SPEARHEAD: 10 x Skinks (70) - Boltspitters & Star Bucklers 5 x Chameleon Skinks (110) MAIN BODY: Skink Starpriest (80) - General - Command Trait : Master of Star Rituals - Spell : Meteoric Convocation Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur (240) - Artefact : Doppelganger Cloak 10 x Saurus Guard (160) REARGUARD: Saurus Scar-Veteran on Carnosaur (240) - Warspear 2 x Razordons (100) TOTAL: 1000/1000 EXTRA COMMAND POINTS: 0 WOUNDS: 59 This list can be a bit swingy, but is one of our higher damage options for meeting engagement. The Doppelgange's Cloak can be traded for sword of Judgement on either Carno or another damage artifact. Quick Guide: Use Serpent Staff and the Oldblood's Command ability to buff your Carnos to kill enemy behemoths Buff the Saurus Guard with Summon Starlight, Celestial Rights, and the ScV's command ability Make certain the Saurus Guard are near a Seraphon hero at all time Use Razordons to clear enemy chaff Meeting Engagement: Eternal Starhost Allegiance: Seraphon - Mortal Realm: Ghyran SPEARHEAD: Saurus Sunblood (120) - Artefact : Ghyrstrike 5 x Saurus Guard (80) MAIN BODY: Skink Starpriest (80) - General - Command Trait : Master of Star Rituals - Spell : Meteoric Convocation Saurus Eternity Warden (140) - Artefact : Incandescent Rectrices 10 x Saurus Guard (160) REARGUARD: 10 x Saurus Guard (160) 2 x Razordons (100) Battalion: Eternal Starhost (150) TOTAL: 990/1000 EXTRA COMMAND POINTS: 1 WOUNDS: 49 Saurus Units seem to be our army's best option for Meeting Engagements. Sadly Skinks are too easily killed and will thus feed the enemy Victory Points. This list has the potential to struggle with fighting high rend behemoths.
Focus on guards or Knights as your battleline in a meeting engagement. Warriors in small units aren't going to be of much use unless you face a daemon list. Skinks work a bit better, but they lack firepower, and without summoning in such a small game it'l become far too Obvious what your opponent should kill to defang your army. Beyond that, in small games summoning isn't nearly as mandatory and most battalions form a reasonable enough basis for small games. So just pick one of them to form the basis and go from there if you don't like the lists suggest by @LizardWizard
I’ve had pretty decent success in meeting engagements with knights supported by a scar-vet on coldone, especially when backed up by a bastiladon!
If you're not summoming, a Slann is still a pretty decent pick, depending. You can drop some fat stellar tempests and get that extra teleport with Great Rememberer.
mwha, given our lackluster casting, even with the new spell lore, you're paying quite a lot for fairly little if you're not using it to summon especially in such a small game.
You can also do some summoning without breaking the bank if you’re mostly just re-summoning models that have died, especially in meeting engagements with small units and a small board. Good options include heroes on foot which can die pretty quickly and cost a decent number of summoning points, or if you have a couple units of knights on the board it should be pretty easy to take the casualties from both units and use the models to summon a fresh 5-man unit. This works pretty well if you’re playing friendly non-competitive matches, but definitely wouldn’t hold up we’ll to competitive play where you need to optimize summoning a bit more.
Meh, that still requires at least some backup models or you'l end up sitting on a bunch of points waiting for your opponent to finally kill something. Plus, if all you can summon is whatever is dead you're inevitably going to run into the issue where you desperatly need a unit of 10 models, but only have a couple of heroes or something (not to mention the occasional player who notices and activly tries screwing with it )
