GW throw out Bretonnia and Tomb Kings yet give these, who were even more neglected, a second chance?

Not the priority list I would have chosen.

meh, they are more unique I guess, bretonnia and tomb kings are kind of bog-standard fantasy factions. Sisters of battle is not something I've ever really seen in another sci-fi universe.

Plus, it's like 90% of their female models. That alone probably already gives them a relativly large and stable fanbase.

Zombies and vampires are even more standard than TK, but exactly the fact that TK were so heavily tied to ancient egypt, was their doom (copyright, yadda yadda).
    Sisters are much more trademarkable.

meh, ancient egypt is a fairly standard inspiration for fantasy stuff as well. Especially when you go for tombs protected by ancient curses & automated statues and the like. Scarabs, automated statues, mummies, you don't have to look far to find them in other games/settings.

And yeah, the whole trademark nonsense. Kinda curious what aspects they had trouble trademarking though that caused this decision. It's not like the models, especially the big special ones, weren't unique enough to distinguish between straight rip-offs and stuff that just happens to also be egyptian-inspired.

A lot of people have been waiting a very long time for a Sister's of Battle release. I actually think that they are going to sell quite well.

Exactly. It sets them apart from all the rest of armies. I think they are a good addition (re-addition) to 40K.

That’s wonderful news, but why are GW considering re-releasing square bases? Are they going to make some sort of rank-and flank game again? Or will AoS become rank-and-flank in a new edition? Because they’ve been advocating round bases ever since AoS came out - they only included round bases in the new sets, and rebased all their Eavy Metal Fantasy miniatures on round bases when AoS arrived. There must be some reason why they’ve invested money into making this move. I’m looking forward to see what it is...

Maybe a standalone game that used square bases?

We can find out what it is in a day.

Maybe they are just Selling their leftover Stock of square bases for hobbyists. I really doubt they will make the game rank and flank since so many of their new releases can't fit properly that way. Maybe they are doing something like Warmaster that will use square bases. Maybe, just maybe, they are bringing WHFB back as a specialist board game like Necromunda.

Maybe it will be large movement Trays like 40k has for an AoS apocalypse style gamemode.

There is no way that AoS will go back to square bases. What would be the point? It would piss off a lot of the player base and burden GW with the cost of having to re-base their Eavy Metal minis all over again. What would they gain?

This seems like more than that. Why make a big announcement for the selling of leftover stock... especially with that stock being something boring like bases?

I doubt it... they clearly put a square base in the picture.

Is it really a big announcement? It's only a post on Facebook with no other teasers or mentions on GW's youtube, webshop or the Warhammer community leading up to it. Also the teaser and reveal is 24 hours apart, not really a long time to build up hype for a new and important product. To me this just seems like it's going to be a fairly small release.

I agree that it might very well end up being a "small release", but something as mundane as liquidating square bases doesn't seem to warrant any type of teaser before the announcement. Also the phrase "Everything comes round again. Even squares" doesn't really make much sense in the context of selling off excess square bases.

I suppose we don't have to wait to find out if I am incorrect.

yeah, I doubt it's just selling their leftover stock.. that'd just be weird and piss off a lot of people who are expecting something grand.

Changing AoS to be on square basis seems like a terrible idea. The models don't work well for rank and file with their dynamic poses.

A specialist game seems a bit weird as well as one of the big strengths of their specialist games is that you can use their models in the main games as well and vice versa.

Square movement trays in which you can slot the round bases for a rank & file game seems the most plausible-ish, but then the picture doesn't make as much sense since it's not a movement tray.

It's overall just kind of a weird announcement.

    Most likely.

    I'm counting down the hours!

It would cause almost as much turmoil as when Fantasy turned into AoS, that's true, but it would attract players who liked the look of the AoS minis and lore but wanted a rank-and-flank game like Fantasy. However, It would be much more likely that either GW are making a rank-and-flank expansion for AoS to cater for these audiences who specifically want a more challenging gaming experience, while retaining the simple rules and round bases for those who prefer less complex rules, or are making a completely new game system with square bases, possibly a separate rank-and-flank game set in the AoS universe or something completely new. There would also be the possibility of GW returning Fantasy as a separate game system in its own right, either by resurrecting 8th or introducing a new 9th Edition, but I think they've already gone too far down the current AoS path for that to happen, as they've already got rid of loads of Fantasy minis and it would cost a fortune to make so many new sculpts of these old units.

Pretty much this. GW wouldn't dedicate a Facebook announcement and a scheduled announcement on Warhammer Community just to them releasing square bases to give players the option of putting their minis on squares rather than round bases. It's got to be something big if GW are making such a hullabaloo about it.

    I doubt it.
I guess it might be a re-release of some classic WHFB stuff, and those need square bases
