It’s official! Fantasy’s coming back boys and girls!

I would never have expected it. I thought GW were finished with Fantasy considering they got rid of so many Fantasy models, so to see that it’s returning is wonderful!

    Addressing @NIGHTBRINGER ’s concerns:

It’s highly unlikely that GW would bring Sigmarines into the Warhammer Fantasy world, because they clearly state they are returning to the Warhammer Fantasy world before the End Times, so long before the creation of the Sigmarines. If they tried it, it would break all the canon they established in Fantasy into smithereens, and if they want to bring the Old World as it was back, that’s not the way to do it. I’m pretty sure they will keep the Old World as the Old World.

Given that Bretonnia and Tomb Kings were a notable part of Fantasy, I’m fairly certain GW will bring them back now, given that they said they would be bringing Fantasy back. If they didn’t they would repel the proportion of the oldhammer player base they are trying to attract who played Bretonnia and Tomb Kings, and that’s something I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t want to do.

Concerning the rules, they keep trying to get across how it will be the Horus Heresy of AoS, and because the Horus Heresy still uses the old 40K rules, that would lead me to assume that they would want to do similar with this game as a prequel to AoS, to preserve old rules and gather the attention of the old player base, alongside that new aspiring player base who fell in love with Warhammer: Total War and want to play the game based around it. Of course they could instead try to do something similar to 8th Edition 40K instead, which wouldn’t be as good, but because they’re bringing back square bases, they’re definitely returning the old rank-and-flank strategy of Fantasy, so some things at least won’t change.

Lastly, I’m especially excited about it because it should mean that they will start bringing back lots of the old Fantasy models, either rereleasing the executed kits (the cheaper strategy) or even bringing back new ones, which means I’ll no longer be in a rush to hunt for OOP fantasy kits.

in all honesty, this is a terrible announcement as they haven't actually explained anything beyond "yeah we're gonna do stuff with the old world again at some point".

Which 1) at least if you axe of a universe, have the guts to stick to your decision and don't paddle back.
And 2) What does this even mean? Are we getting WFB back? Do the old models/factions come back? The old rules? Do we just get random spin-off games that for no real reason are set in the old world instead of in AoS?

Also 3) unlike the horus heresy & 40K the old world and AoS are only very loosely connected. Further fleshing out the old world adds nothing to AoS (and vice versa). Whereas with the horus heresy and 40K you can actually give background as to why things are the way they are in 40K, or show what happened to an interesting character or faction from the heresy 10.000 years later.

Plus, unlike with 40K & horus heresy a lot of faction will have crossovers. I mean a WFB saurus and AoS saurus are the exact same so you'd naturally would want to re-use models.. But with both the bases & the issues with posing it seems like re-using models from one in the other will become complicated. So even that isn't really an advantage.

All in all it just feels very much like a halfhearted attempt to reign old purists back in, and make some more money, as opposed to something that genuinly adds to warhammer as a whole, which is kinda weird.

    Yup... ain't that the truth!

That is definitely the most positive spin one could possibly put on it. We'll have to wait and see if you are correct or just wish listing.

They're just building up hype. After all, here we are busily discussing the possibilities.

well give something to actualy discuss then. Cuz speculating about "we'l do a thing" is boring as it could essentially be anything.

That is largely what it is - GW have seen the success of Warhammer 1 and 2 Total War, and have realised the Warhammer Fantasy world is still loved, and greatly missed by those who used to know it well. I’m pretty sure the intention with this move was first and foremost to attract both the old Fantasy playerbase into returning to the hobby and those who fell in love with the Warhammer Total War franchise after Fantasy was originally executed and didn’t like how it had been replaced with something different. AoS will still be around, so AoS fans will still be able to play their game and that’s where most of the new stuff will be added. However, this move they make will mean Fantasy will once again be there for those who want to play it (@Lizerd, this could be your chance to finally get into GW’s flagship game for real!).

The fact that we have 4-5 threads on this forum alone that are discussing it would indicate otherwise. This is just a teaser. They are 3 years out, a slow build is the way for them to go.

I agree, that must have been a significant factor in their decision.

Honestly, I've been using the Warhammer Armies fanbase book to slowly make a new Dogs of War army using Perry Brothers miniatures (among others). I think I'll just keep doing that for the Warhammer Armies Project "9th edition" rules for the time being.

I’ve been really wanting to get into warhammer fantasy and this revival may be my opportunity. If school lets up a bit it may be a very real possibility

Looks like TWW2 has been making too much money to ignore :joyful::joyful::joyful:

    warhammer fantasy returns2.png

My reaction to this announcement was mostly bemused laughter. How many years has it been?

Wonder if GW is going to redo their studio armies again? And curious what the footprints will look like; round bases in square slots will be bigger unit footprints than armies that were never converted to round bases in the first place.

Is the scale still going to still be 28mm heroic or if it will be at a smaller scale like the old Warmaster? I assume the same scale so the same models can be used.

Overall, this is nice news. Glad to see the computer games making an impact. I hope if they do bring it back it's more streamlined, along the lines of KOW.

    ...

Lots of reaction videos out there.

Didn't look for any reaction videos of dudes who lit their old armies on fire :joyful:

One of those threads has already devolved into "meme's for the meme god", and the "discussion" here consists mostly of people either saying "cool" or "meh", and at this point it's partially becoming a meta-discusion about the discusion about the announcement. I wouldn't exactly call that discussing the announcment.

Meh I dislike teasers that don't actually give any usefull information. Especially when what they tease is going to potentially have a massive impact.

Well, given that he’s 15 at the moment, when it does come round he should have finished school by then ;)

The discussions are still going strong. There are SEVERAL YouTube discussion videos as well. All for a product that we won't see for 3 years.

They have plenty of time to release information. Better to slowly release info throughout the 3 year window prior to launch rather than release everything right at the onset and have excitement cool.

meh I'd at least have released some information.

e.g. we're making a game of type X. You can (or cannot) use models in both AoS and whatever this is gonna be. It'l be a main/spin-off game. etc. Just anything, something beyond "we're gonna do something with this IP at some point".

    All in good time!

They can very easily give us that information once the hype from this announcement dies down. They have plenty of time to drip release new info. They have to effectively fill that 3-4 year gap with tidbits of information.

Well then start with the info 2 years ahead instead of 3-4. Even as a corperate announcement it feels weak and not worth bringing into the world at large yet.

And yet, here we are talking about it. In fact, you yourself are engaged in two simultaneous conversations about the topic of their announcement. I'd say GW hit its target.
