Sure, the difference is that we know we will always have this piece on the board, so you can plan and tailor your list around it. Your opponent will likely not have a plan for it, and he isnt the one deciding where it goes down on the table.
I mean you honestly could make that argument but I feel like it's a bit less of a risk for us due to our risk mitigation options with saurus shield drones and astrolith FNP distributors. While also being very dangerous to anything close by when we are inside of it. Dishing out mortals pretty reliably to anything that gets close. On top of things like Kroak that will already melt most threats as they close the gap. Though I do agree that it isn't ideal that enemies can steal it and we can't place it after sides are decided. I'd rather it be more under our control but I'm still going to get some good use out of it. Once these quarantines are over that is.
Right, so placement is going to be key. Just looking at the battle plans, it's pretty difficult for me to find spots where I can maximize my potential benefits while also minimizing the opponents. In other words - if I put it somewhere that would benefit me, it's almost always going to have a 50% shot of helping the enemy.
To be honest, until we try it a couple of times, we won't know. If the impact is not that big, when it is on the enemy territory, it is worth taking - at least it is free and can do significant damage to the enemy.
This is fair. I just have trouble seeing how -1 to hit and +1 save won't be pretty impactful. Think what you would be willing to do/spend normally for that buff on a unit.
Me neither. But there's still hope, that large size will make it harder to protect garrisoned units. This is the problem for us too, but we have slann with guard and spam mortal wound atop of it. I wonder what other factions' players think about it.
Yeah but it also has a built in debuff in that the unit is stuck in that place and can't move unless they want to lose that bonus. I think we are just going to have to learn to see the engine as a thing that we place with terrain spacing in mind. Having it within 18" of important central terrain so it is useful to us. While making sure it is in a position that gives no real advantage to the opponent if they were to hold it. Making their wasted resources holding it useless to them when you just shrug and choose not to worry about it. We have a lot of stuff to get around LoS with the Slann inside so it isn't like you have to put it in a place that garrisoned artillery can get good lines of fire. Just in range of certain effects that only you can utilize.
Im beyond hope. it will be fun for casual, but not taken at competitive once this corona bs clears up
It will 100% be taken to tournaments. Anyways, it is a kinda pointless discussion. People that dislike it are obviously welcome to refund their purchase and hate it. I get it, you are upset - I wanted more from it too, but this is what we got. I would just appreciate if it wasnt spammed in every thread, especially the one that is directly dedicated to trying to make it work.
that's the point of the thread though. if you surround yourself with an echo chamber of only people that are happy with it you will over look the downfalls, and then miss something that makes it not work. also this thread is the FAQ thread lol
Sure, this is a forum after all which kinda implies discussion - Not just an echo chamber. But for it to make sense, both sides need to be contributing to the discussion. As said, I get it you are upset, but expressing "this shit sucks, im getting a refund" isn't really helpful.
Good points @Grotpunter. Constructive criticism is better. I think this was mentioned a bit earlier, but if one of my friends got his "Shootcast" Vanguard Raptors and/or Celestar Ballista in there it would be all over for me. I guess, the point is that enemy ranged units that get in an Engine will pose a real problem. Can Endless Spells affect units in an Engine?
its incredibly helpful. the way you state it, makes it seem as if I haven't been a part of the conversation prior. that ive just rage quit on the model. this is simply not accurate. ive evaluated it. ive even done a test game against orrucks and nighthaunt with it. its fun for casual, its not competitive enough for high end play.
RAW yes. you use the base of the RE for measuring for anything. so as long as it ends within range or passes over a small portion of the RE base for the spells that use that rules it will affect ALL the units inside.
i agree with you, it makes no sense thematically and from a gameplay perspective. However, I bought one, opened the damn box, so will have to build the sucker. Re: garrisoning ranged units, you are correct, but most ranged units worth bringing will be high priority targets anyway, and you’ll likely want to deal with them with MW, which is primarily via casting. Salamanders are the only MW solution that are harmed by the terrain piece in this case. Basically, if I am bringing it, I will ensure it is either a poor choice to garrison by the enemy by its placement, as well as make sure I have the tools to deal with whatever goes inside. Most cases you can place it in one “corner” and then if you don’t get it, deploy opposite corner. That’s typically means most of your deployment will be out of range of any shooting edit: textbook example of polishing a turd
But if he puts those models inside, he likely wont be able to screen the entire footprint, so you can very easily deepstrike it with a bunch of Salamanders, or reach it with Kroak turn 1 etc. Terradon Riders are also gods when it comes to dealing with stuff inside the Engine.
What do you think about RSE+dracothion's tail? Once again, you set it up wholly within deployment zone. If your opponent choses to garrison in it, he will be left vulnerable to stuff like deep-striking salamanders, which is unacceptable, if seraphon have first turn. Since the RSE is at very edge of the territory, it is impossible to zone it out before the game starts. So he will either have to bypass garrison or give us the second turn. And double turn against 2x salamander pack is not that anyone would like to experience.
Im actually surprised nobody is really talking about Dracothion's Tail with Saurus. Being able to deepstrike with a large unit of Saurus etc. seems awesome. Most Saurus buffs are in the combat phase, where as most Skink buffs are in the hero phase, so you can deepstrike and buff easily. If you use the +1 run/charge, with their built in charge reroll, there's like a 73% chance of succeeding a 9" charge which is rather solid imo. The Starseer charge buff is in the charge phase and could be juicy on a Carno.
I think there is a potential list with 3x20 club saurus (or 1x40 spears and 2x20 clubs) In a Sunclaw dropping down and causing pain. Supported by other buffs, this could be a pretty mean surprise to your enemy
Well, we did. But things kind of obvious there. Deepstrike+charge+hope you kill the enemy before it kills you. Starseer is a must, of course. Btw, you can losat warriors and than DS heroes. This way you can buff them in hero phase.
