Hey guys, This is my painting blog and I am going to share my progress with you guys here and I hope we will have a lot of fun here. My background & why I do this: I have been playing Warhammer Fantasy battle since I started studying and I have done so for a lot of years. I have been to a lot of tournaments, but I had stopped playing when AoS hit the scene. It was not for me and so I switched to Warmachine/Hordes and continued to play that. Recently however, the WMH scene is starting to decline and again, I felt like I could no longer enjoy the game in the current state... Several of my friends from WMH were looking into T9A and so I figured I would do the same. I did take a couple of games, but I am starting to get a feel for the game. I have speedpainted a Vampire Covenant army, so that I can play on events and now I want to start a project, where I can try and achieve better results. I have not used my airbrush for several months now and I really want to do it again. I chose the Saurians because I wanted something that can adapt to many different playstyles and because my son (4,5yo) loves dinosaurs. I have bought 2 Starter boxes and I am now working my way through the assembly and when he saw the Carnosaur I had done, he feel in love with the model and asked me if he could choose the colors for it. Luckily my son actually does not have a bad taste for colors (I blame his mother!) and I said yes, cause I was wondering about the color scheme anyways... The color scheme: This army will not have a color scheme. For each and every Mini I will ask my son, how I will paint the mini. I will only ask him to chose one dark and one bright color, so that I can ensure, that this contrast will be there. In addition, I can decide how to use those colors on the model (base colors, highlight etc.). I will try and bring the models together through the use of consistent bases, but it will be a colorful ride nonetheless. The colors for the carno will be: VGC Ice Blue P3 Coal Black P3 Necrotite Green

Depending on how creative your son's color ideas turn out this might become a very interesting and colorful army!
I am really looking forward to starting to paint, but right now, I am still working on assembly and removing moldlines (hint: use the back of the hobby knife)... I might start tonight with the Carnosaur, because I am really excited to try the color scheme... Luckily my son, got the talent of my wife who works as an illustrator/comic artist and his choices for colors are usually quite advanced for his age, but he still is 4, so yeah, I expect interesting and colorful, but that is why we all chose lizards/frogs right? We want that...
As I said, these are the colors for the Carnosaur. I am thinking Iceblue for the belly, Coal Black for the scales and Necrotite Green for some fancy pattern on the scales. Gold will be gold, leather will be leather and so on... Could be looking nice I think. I will be using temple bases to get a coherent look for those.
Yesterday evening I started painting the Carno. Both skin and scales will get one more highlight and afterwards, I will be using the Necrotite Green to do some tiger stripes on the scales and will call it "done" for the colors I had to use. Afterwards it is claws, mouth, lether stripes and gold to do. I am undecided on the base though. What do you guys think? I am considering either sandstone or just regular weathered grey stone plates. Normally I would decide that based on the color scheme of my army and try to add another contrast, however, this time I cannot do that. I will be just a decision to be made. What would be your choice? Also, what do you think of the Carnosaur? And do you guys have a good recipe for some nice warm gold? I often times go for a greenish gold, but I would like to go for something warmer this time. Looks great so far! I think sandstone would contrast nicely with the colour scheme. I've gone with warm gold myself. I use GW Retributor Armour or VGC Glorious Gold as the base, wash it with a flesh wash and then highlight with VGC Polished Gold.
Nice colors on the Carnosaur thus far. For the base it raises the question if you would do all your model's bases the same way(to have some sort of coherancy)? If so then you need to pick one that contrasts most colors. So your son can pick any Color and the base still has this contrasting effect. I would say Grey is the best option. If all bases will be different then for this one sandstone is best. Grrr, Imrahil
Thanks guys for the kind words! I will probably go for grey, as I know how to make a nice looking grey, while my sandstone recipe has been lost in time... The bases definitely have to be consistent, in order for the army to look like an army. My son will always only chose the colors for skin and scales or the army will look like i bought everything on ebay. The base is bought by tabletop-art (<-This is a link to the manufacturer). A German manufacturer from Munich, so I don't know whether or not they are available in your country. They are definitely the highest quality, I have seen for any premade bases. I normally do them myself, but it is really difficult to make a convincing jungle on a 20mm base and still fit a mini on it, so I went for "Lizard City" as those bases are called.
I finally decided to do two test bases and started with the sandstone base, as I knew how I would do the grey stone bases. I tried it and really like it, so I went for it. Helps that is just a base coat and some wash. I will probably add some tufts or something of the like to the bases, once I have finished more than one mini, but for now I will call him done. I still need to paint the eyes, but that can wait until I stop bleeding from my painting thumb. (pro tip: Never grasp for a brand new potato grater, they can grate thumbs just as well!) I gotta say, my son has good taste in colors. I would have NEVER used the Necrotite Green with the light blue and the greenish dark grey, but it works really well! Next up, ob the painting table will be the Stygiosaur/Bastiladon/Ankylosaurus on special request from my son. I don't really intend to play him as I am absolutely not convinced by the rules, but I will probably use him as a proxy for the Taurosaur/Stegadon/Triceratops, until I have one of those, but I promised myself, I would only buy more when I am done painting all I got. I have never tried it, but the idea of painting models always one by one with a different colors scheme works nicely for me. Somehow, it keeps me motivated and I enjoy the painting a lot more than the batch painting. Looking at it right now, I will probably highlight the gold a little to make it pop a little more. Maybe a bit of a mix of Silver into the gold... Let's see once it is dried and matt varnished.
Excellent work! I agree, not colors I would have picked or would have thought worked together, but they actually turned out pretty great! Also really like how the gold-tail-plate details look

I do hope so, the yellow is extremely bright and the blue extremely dark. I hope I can make it work... Your stuff looks amazing. Well done!
