I haven't watched it very recently, but I got it on DVD to see what it was like and thought it was great. I do like how unflinchingly dark Disney made this film, it really shows how much more guts they had in those days compared to now, it's infuriating Jeffrey Katzenberg didn't have the same amount of balls or he wouldn't have vandalised the most grimdark part of it. John Hurt's Horned King is the epitome of said darkness and his menacing character is something we'll never see the likes of again. He's right up there with Frollo, Hades and Ratigan as the best of the Disney Villains for me. To me the film an underrated gem, particularly given how the bar has been raised for the level of scariness that is acceptable in family films in recent times - if it had been made in the 2000s-early 2010s, I think it would have been much more popular, given at that time we were given dark animated films like The Prince of Egypt, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Kung Fu Panda 2. I certainly appreciate how it's become a cult classic these days. I also like the Brythonic setting and legends it evokes, I really must give the Chronicles of Prydain a read at some point as well.
