We have the same #6. :woot:

This is difficult, a lot of movies that were integral to my childhood and adolescence I now barely think about fondly. A lot of classic movies just remind me of the crappy sequels and prequels. There are lots of movies I think everyone should see once and I will watch it with other people to make sure they see it.

Me-forcing-my-friends-to-watch-the-show-or-movies-that-i-like-meme-68

But there only a few non-animated movies that I want to watch multiple times by myself to pass the time (without gratuitously multitasking). I'm not sure about genre, but these ten are at least vaguely in the action genre. I'm sure if I really listed every movie I liked I could revise this list a bit.

Hot Fuzz
The Dark Knight
Galaxy Quest
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Robin Hood Men in Tights
The Predator (1987)
Army of Darkness
Batman Begins
Gladiator
Stardust

Galaxy Quest is more sci-fi, Army of Darkness is more horror and Men in Tights is more a spoof comedy (as Galaxy Quest also is), are there three alternatives you can think of that would definitely count as action?

Great idea for a thread! I am sure some of these will fit better in other categories, but oh well, plenty of movies to add to the next list I am sure! In no particular order:

Princess Mononoke
Incredibles 1&2
Big Hero 6
Inglourious Basterds
The Dark Knight
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Jurassic Park
Van Helsing

Aaaaaahhhhh...

But @NIGHTBRINGER wants your 1-10 my friend! He wants to know what you value highest! :)

Nice to see Jurassic Park here and the first Pirates of the Caribbean!

Topic #2 - Top Ten Horror/Thriller movies.

Same rules as before:

Genres will always have a bit of wiggle room. Many movies will fall into multiple genres. You can google the genre of a movie as a quick guide (it is okay to deviate from this if you feel the movie belongs in a different genre). This is what I did for the most part, and then slotted the movie into the genre that felt best for me. Use your best judgment and a remember that is your subjective list. The only hard fast rule is that if you list a movie under one genre, don't list that movie under a different genre in a future weeks list. For example, if you put Rocky in your Action list, don't also list it in your Drama list a few weeks down the line. Choose the genre for the movie that feels right for you.

You can condense a movie series into one single selection if you want to (i.e. Rocky series or Rocky I-IV, etc) or choose a specific movie out of a series (i.e. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ) as you see fit. It's your choice for each of your entries.

  1. Silence of the Lambs - Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lector is perhaps the best villain in movie history. Jodie Foster is also fantastic and their scenes together are utterly captivating. Great dialogue, good writing and even better acting.
  2. Cube - a low budget Canadian indie film (which I usually never care for). It's one of those movies that most people will either absolutely love or absolutely hate. Psychology, math, a deadly labyrinth and a puzzle to solve come together to make a very unique film. It's one of those movies that make you think. I'd be surprised if many of you had even seen or heard of it. The sequels are not nearly as good.
  3. Aliens - a perfect blend of horror, sci-fi and action. Many people like the original better but I personally like this a bit more. Keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
  4. Alien - the one that started it all. The slow build up of the movie really adds to its horror effect. Something that you don't see as much in today's films. Ellen Ripley is a great character (throughout the series) and is very well acted by Sigourney Weaver. The film has an amazing dark and gritty feel throughout.
  5. Jaws - an absolute classic. Manages to be extremely menacing without the aid of all of today's fancy CGI. The mechanical shark breaking down turned out to be an absolute blessing in disguise. The soundtrack is extremely fitting and creates a sense of fear throughout the film.
  6. Pitch Black - a fun action packed horror/action flick. Vin Diesel's Riddick is a cool character that I've always enjoyed. The premise in the movie may be simple, but it makes for a fun ride.
  7. The Descent - probably the creepiest film on my list (at least in my opinion). This movie is great at creating a sense of tension. The triple threat faced by the all female main cast feels grounded and real.
  8. World War Z - my favourite zombie flick. Brad Pitt is really good in the film. I like that it features the dangerous zombies (runners, not the shamblers that we see in the Walking Dead), because it actually makes them much more of a realistic threat. I like that the film actually works towards a solution.
  9. Bird Box - featuring a very different type of enemy; something that essentially preys on our greatest sense. It really puts the characters in a bind.
  10. Event Horizon - I'm not a huge horror fan, so at this point my list is a bit thin. Still, this is a fun movie with some very disturbing visuals.

Honourable mention: Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Admittedly horror is far from my favourite genre. The number of horror movies that I enjoy is extremely sparse (though not as bad as Westerns). I don't care for the traditional "slasher" flicks, so that really cuts down my choices. Most horror movies feature characters that act extremely illogically and ruin the immersion for me.

Anyways, looking forward to your lists!

Funnily enough, I'm not much of a fan of Horror either. The vast majority of the films with a horror bent to them that I like have a fantasy or sci-fi air to them, and some of those I'm postponing to those categories. I'll see what I can do, however. The inclusion of the Thriller genre in here as well also gives me a bit more leg room.

  1. Witchfinder General - While it could be seen as tame compared to the gorefest horror films we get nowadays, there is an undeniable air of creepiness in this 1960s-made English Civil War-set film, with horror legend Vincent Price as the malevolent eponymous Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins. The brutality of the witch-hunts of this period and the hypocrisy of the Witchfinder profession are laid bare in all their horrific glory.
  2. Van Helsing - Hugh Jackman stars in this mash-up of all the renowned Horror stories. If you fancy seeing Van Helsing as a werewolf team up with Frankenstein's Monster to take down Dracula, you can't go wrong with this one.
  3. Black Death - A Medieval horror with disease as the Big Bad. Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bean's band of travellers flee the eponymous pestilence and encounter a village that is seemingly untouched. Suspicion, false accusations, brutal executions and outright conflict follow, with one of the heroes ultimately becoming a remorseless villain.
  4. Shaun of the Dead - A comedy but also a zombie film written in tribute to George A. Romero's franchise and the first in the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. Not so fond of the gore personally (I never am) but the comedy keeps me watching this one.
  5. The Mummy (1959) - Starring another horror legend of the 20th Century, the late, great Sir Christopher Lee, and his counterpart in so many Hammer Horrors, Peter Cushing, I thoroughly enjoyed the British Hammer take on the classic Egyptian horror story.
  6. Jaws - An undeniable classic. We're gonna need a bigger boat...
  7. The Woman in Black - one of Harry Potter's first film roles after the Harry Potter franchise had ended, this Victorian era-set ghost story is sinister and genuinely tragic. There are some unquiet spirits that are never satisfied...
  8. Ghost Ship (2017) - A British-set lower-budget ghost story that is still pretty well done. If you're a fan of Age of Sail films and dramas, this one is worth a watch.
  9. What Lies Beneath - More of a thriller than a horror, Harrison Ford's web of lies and scandals is gradually undone when ghostly goings-on start happening.
  10. Fatal Attraction - In this age of #MeToo and female supremacism, it is important that we men remember that, just as there are some bad men out there, there are also women who are obsessive to the point of madness, such as Glenn Close's singleton in this 80s classic. Though the protagonist brings it upon himself and his family with a needless extramarital affair with her, Close's character becomes a murderous psychopath that helps to firmly root the film in the thriller genre.
I don't have any honourable mentions, but on the to-watch list is The Wicker Man (the original of course, also starring Christopher Lee), which could easily make this list.

Are we talking about the same movie? ...

yes, I've added a wrong "the".
Going to edit my post.
I was completely sure that I was going to be the only one with Cube on my list. It's good to hear that someone else on the forum enjoys it as well. It's such an intelligent movie. An interesting look at how people react under stress.

Again, in a mixed order (sorr @NIGHTBRINGER, you won't have me on this :p)
I'm just going to assume that the first one on your list is #1, the second one is #2 and so on. Subconsciously, it's an ordered list.

I think this will be my list

  1. In Bruges
  2. Shutter Island
  3. Underworld
  4. No Country for Old Men
  5. Face Off
  6. Jumanji (1995) Sweeny Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street
  7. The Shining
  8. The Prestige
  9. Blade (I-II)
  10. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Honorable mentions:

Final Destination (2000), John Wick, Megalodon (2020)
I think I have seen a movie about a (cruise)ship that had a giant octopus with mouths on it's tentacles below deck. Sucking the life and inners from all passengers. But I cant remember the title (it was quite an old one)

Grrr, Imrahil

Horror/Thriller? I thought that was a family comedy. Admittedly it has been a really long time since I've seen it.

Deep Rising perhaps...

Alright! New category, new list!

  1. Predator
  2. Alien
  3. Event Horizon
  4. The Descent
  5. Pitch Black
  6. The Ring
  7. Tremors
  8. Jaws
  9. Army of Darkness
  10. Alien Vs. Predator
As I'm sure you can see, sci-fi horror movies are a favorite of mine. I love the Predator and Alien franchises, and I really like the expanded shared universe. I think The Ring and The Descent are probably the only "pure" horror films on this list, lol!

The Tremors franchise is a guilty pleasure of mine. I've seen all of the films in the series!

Army of Darkness was one of those movies I saw bits and pieces of when I was younger, and enjoyed discovering it again as an adult. And of course, Jaws is so iconic that I'm not surprised I'm seeing it on most lists so far :)
