It would be pretty hard to justify. The top five European leagues are miles ahead of MLS. I'm not sure if there is an outright rule against awarding it to a player outside of Europe, but I can't see how it could be justified. The only way I could ever see it happening would be in a World Cup year, where the player dominated in and won the tournament. That's how Messi won it this time around. Let's say player X (not Messi, as he will be too old) from MLS ended up scoring 10 goals in every game in the next World Cup and won the tournament. I could see that player winning the award. Of course, what's the odds of an MLS player being able to do such a thing?
Think to Mbappè... 3 goals in the final match, and basically he losed the cup because his teammates' performance in the last penalties was poor.
