WOW, Im amazed at your skill, do the models you sculpt go into production at all?

After a 23 year break from warhammer things have progressed at a unbelivable rate.

Just amazed, utterly amazed at your skill.

Really glad your keeping all this going at a good pace. Making new stuff and then getting more inspiration can be tough. I find that the inspiration is the hardest part, what makes for a great hobby. If you take your molding comparison and apply it to the hobby at large, anything can be worth waiting and working the extra steps for. Lizardmen are wonderful for this (as are 40k tyranids!). Funny how we "find" these "new" things in life and they fit so much of how our models look.

    Dinosaurs are so cool.

Some do, some don't usually anything which could causes issues with IP doesn't (either gets used by me or goes in a drawer)

Inspiration is very difficult at times and great at others, I'd say the biggest issue with it is we never get to control where and when it comes. :p

EDIT: Just two smallish notes, first off is hopefully things will be getting back on track now, been juggling a lot of difficulties recently, but have finally changed job and am much happier. :)

Second off, I've been thinking on a bit and wondered would smaller sections on things like objective markers help? (comet of cassandra for example). I'm also tinkering (depend on how this stegadon section goes) of doing more of these larger kit bash/conversion tuts.

    Thoughts?

I've been painting for years, but just recently started working with green stuff. Your tutorials are amazing and such great inspiration! Keep it up! The stegadon is shaping up nicely and I wouldn't mind more of these.

Eesh, I've been peering through your posts for some time now and I always leave impressed. Why hasn't GW hired you :penguin: their models would actually be worth the asking price.

Rikard, a while ago you posted a poll on this forum asking about what you thought a Quango/Coatl looked like. Do you have plans to make/convert either?

Did a fair bit on it yesterday, hopefully shouldn't be to long now. :)

Because they haven't offered to pay me enough :D
Seriously though, I don't fit in with their "style" (their words from a few years back, not mine), I'm not fussed though, I have way more freedoom this way. :)

As for the Quango/coatl, it's a possibility, I'll have more of a think on it after I've completed more of the lizardmen pieces and post some updates (including plans).

Ah, I guess you just need to make more clunky and cartoon-y models in the future... ;)
You're skills would be far better suited to Forge World, it's just a shame that if you joined now you'd spend all day designing a myriad of slightly different Space Marine shoulder pads.

I'd be interested to see what you'd model for the Quango. I've always imagined it as looking something similar to a Dragon mixed with an Archaeopteryx.

Your custom sculpts are beautiful. I really wish the Cold Ones you got from the Lizardmen boxes looked as good as the Dark Elf ones. GW should get on that and have the DE Cold Ones take place of the ones we have lol.

Yup, the dark elf ones are infinitely better than ours. Shame I have so many of the Lizardmen variety and none of the dark elf ones.

@Rikard : your stuff is always fantastic. You're tremendously talented!

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. GW should really get on updating those models to the Dark Elf ones.

If the 9th edition rumours are true, there is little to no chance of that happening unfortunately. :(:(:(

I guess this is the final nail in the coffin for me. Why not just kill fantasy all together rather than do this? This is just postponing the inevitable.

I'm in the same boat, if this comes to pass, I stick with 8th edition. My only hope (a hope that is sadly constantly receding) is that these rumours turn out to be untrue. At the moment they are only rumours, though they do come from some very reliable rumour mongers. The way the end times :depressed: ended doesn't fill me a great sense of confidence.

    Only time will tell. :nailbiting:

Just a quicky, but if possible could we keep discussions about 9th ed, races/systems getting squatted, etc out of this sticky?

More of a personal preference on this one (aside from the fact it spreads out this topic with fewer actual tutorials, although admittedly, that one is kind of my fault), a bit like the why don't you sculpt for GW comments (though again, this one is more my fault as I'm the one who is left feeling a bit awkward by that question).

In a nutshell it boils down to this:
    • I could NEVER sculpt full time, all that squinting leaves me with a blinding headache if I do 8 or more hours straight.
    • Being forced to sit down and sculpt five times a day would drive me up the wall (my job and hobbies, on the whole are very active).
    • I don't fit GW's style, I fit my style, which is why I started and how I'd like to continue.
    • I've tried sculpting professionally and it's as horrible as it is soul destroying, never again (it's kept to a bear minimum and only for two companies).

Now moving on before I make matters worse.

What objective markers would be most useful?
The thing here is I've thought of only two so far (comet of cassandra and throne of vines), but I'm thinking markers relevant to Lizardmen more so than just generally markers for all armies (things like wound markers and artillery are generic). This is also because markers are something I can do quick and easily, a bit like conversions as they're much quicker so will be planning to do more and it also makes it easier for others to pick up (a bit like the whole walking before running, or heavy converting before complete scratch builds).

    • So what do you find you often need a marker for but don't have?

Apologies for the side track; back on topic:

For more Lizardmen-specific markers, what about...
    1. Stored die marker for the "Reservoir of Eldritch Energy" Slann discipline
    2. Blot Toad Marker (I know there is a GW marker for it, but maybe for those that are converting ripprs from old school terradons)
    3. Fiery Convocation marker

On a slightly different note, did you ever considered sculpting decorative bases for saurus, skinks, kroxigor and others? Maybe in a jungle or ancient temple motif? Are they much more difficult to sculpt than a marker? I would imagine there would be a fair amount of interest for something like that.

Hand of Glory - and the ability to show +1/2/3 (and possibly which stat or all relevant stats). I can often use the card, but showing the number usually means a die - which can be accidentally picked up. Also, on the (rare) chance I'm considering swapping the spell, having the marker instead of the card (which might accidentally go back into my available High Magic pile) would be nice.

The -1 to hit marker for a unit affected by Tempest

The Egg of Quango - A marker to go on the model to show that it still hasn't been used yet.
Cube of Darkness - Same concept.
Drop Rocks for Terradons - Same

    Hope these ideas were helpful.

Not a problem, will have a think on that one.

Done some solid work on my steg today, would everyone prefer bit by bit updates (example below):
    Part 2 : Tail
    Part 3 : Boney crest
    Part 4 : Flank
    Part 5 : Feet

Something along those lines at any rate, otherwise I could do it in one but it might well turn out to be very large.

I found a small tut on did for my own toad marker too.

Not a huge amount to say on this one as it was quite a quick piece, but hopefully you can all see what I mean about layering things up in stages, it makes life so, so, so, so, so MUCH easier. :)

I have also been starting on the marker for the comet of Cassandra too.

That looks so good. How long does it take you to sculpt something like that?
