I did not know where to post this question so don't heckle to much! My question is; I want to field a entire skink army and I have around 25 skinks on coldone models, can I use them as saurus coldone riders for points and rules/gaming purposes? I'm not sure how acceptable this is as the last time i played there were rules for skink coldones.
    Cheers for the help

My two cents would be that it depends on your opponent. I'd ask well before the game, and if you're wondering about tournaments, I'd ask the organizer, in both cases as far in advance as possible.

I'd be OK with the alternatives you describe, and I really hope most other people would be too for friendly games, but I can easily see tournaments being more picky.

Sorry that's not a definitive answer. Good luck!

Iskander has the heart of it, at least as I see it. I will add a bit though.

Yes, it's down to how your opponent feels. This is how I feel:

My strong preference would be that the right model is used for the job. It doesn't have to be a GW model, but it should be appropriate. A skink on a cold one is not the same as a saurus on one. This is especilly true if you have skinks in the army NOT on cold ones. I hugely involved reasons for this, but the short answer is that what the models look like actually matters in the game.

That said, I would not deny you. I'd still play you, but it would not be as much fun for me. I probably woulnd't not even say anything to you about it.

In a tournament, I would expect the organizer to disallow the models, and if they were allowed I would try to see if the scoring system allowed for me to reduce your score for taking non-representative models. Nothing personal - it's just an area that I would look into as your army would diminish my enjoyment of the game.

Note that this would have nothing to do with your sportsmanship, most likely. If you were a nice person, acted like an adult, and otherwise made for pleasant interaction, I'd score you highly as one should. I would simply see if there was a section that allowed me to mark down based on having the wrong models for the unit.

Sleboda i appreciate the honesty. To prevent any possible trouble il just leave them in the display cabinet.

I would say, "sure, interesting theme."

If there were two kinds of things on Cold Ones in the current rules it would cause confusion, but there are [?] not, so no probs there.

    More generally

For me the acceptability of "counts-as-modelling" all depends on where the models fall on the Creativity <=== vs ===> Lameness scale.

"I didn't have enough archers so all these HighElf spear guys are archers too." Lame. No. Just No.

"I have an Ice Themed Army. All these little Penguin guys that look like Frostlings from the Shadowmagic computer game are my skinks." Creative. Cool. Tell me more. Are those huge polar bears your Kroxigors?

I agree with the Rogue Saurus Chicken Head Guy. The little guys wouldn't confuse matters (assuming same base size), and I think that I would be more likely to go "cool! Where did you get the ancient models?" than think you were ruining some sort of aesthetic norm.

Paint them well and give the unit an awesome name and some plausible back story and I think there would be few problems at a social level. It would be a shame to keep them on ice.

Checking ahead when it gets serious sounds like good advice, though.

On a related note, just hypothetically (asking for a friend... who is me), how would you feel about a block of Saurus warriors where some of the models had spears, but most had hand weapons? The entire block can only have one choice, for game rules purposes, but can I run it with mixed models like that? Both in your opinion, and the wider tourney world?

@skink-a-saurus Personally for me it comes down to what level of confusion the proxy creates. In your case the cold ones are a dead easy give away. It would be very obvious as to what they are representing so it wouldn't put me at a disadvantage. I would be 100% okay with it... actually it would be fun to play against such a creative conversion list.

I can't speak for tournaments, that will most likely vary between tournament organizers. It's best to check with the T.O. well in advance.

I would have no problem with it. I'd probably just ask that you put the spear guys in the front rank so that I know what the unit is representing. As long as it doesn't create confusion its not a problem at all.

I do this all the time! and nobody complains. In previous editions GW put it in the rules that roughly 50% of the unit should have the right weapon. When playing mixed weapons people also tend to put guys with the right weapon in the front rank.

As to the original question. For me it comes down to confusion, and i am not that easily confused so I would be perfectly fine with the skink-cold one riders. The Cold ones can basically just be one thing in the book.

For my orcs I am using converted mournfangs as mangler squigs. The round base and the Nigth goblins make sure nobody will get confused

    Whaaaat! Me want!

The real problem here is that these particular models actually used to exist. Then GW had a cow and destroyed everything that was good and right in the world, along with our precious Sacred Spawnings. These are the original Cold One Riders! Heck yeah you should use them, even if GW was silly enough to discontinue the option.

Just tell your opponent first. There shouldn't be many people that would have a problem with it.

    OPINION OF NEXS:

The only situation where it would be unacceptable is in a tournament.

    By your command! ;)

These are the only shots i have available atm, Very very wip but you ll get the impression. I dont have them completely painted up yet, but if you want a shot in a more advanced state you ll have to wait till wednesday. It's not even a real conversion, just some model slapped together, but imho it works quite nice.

thx, I just totaly disliked the mangler squig model, as you could just as well stick some night goblins on an orange.

This image is hosted here. Looks like someone was turning it into a Stegadon. (I went looking for mournfangs because I had never heard of them.)

I would very much be in favor of you playing your skink cold one riders as the current cold one unit, they are GW models and were in fact the original cold one riders. There is no reasonable way to get them confused with any other unit and they provide exactly the kind of personalization and unique flavor that a hobby should have, I would disagree with Sledoba and actually score you higher if possible due to the extra effort you took to maintain a theme while staying true to GW models.

Also I would be ok with the mixing of saurus weapons as long as at least the front two ranks were the correct weapon and it was clearly explained before the battle began. This would be a lot dicier in a tournament and open up for an opponent to blame a mistake on it so I would try hard not to need to play this way.
