So update time! I've been busy with work (7nights in a row, 6 days in a row that kin of thing) it takes a lot out of a guy. So I'm trying to finish off the commands for the produce isle skinks. You know its been years but i finally noticed there's a little guy on this one type of old skink standard XD. Chotek in all his scarlet glory shall hold up the heavens ! When the skinks are done I think I shall do a year in review of everything I've gotten done in the last year. (I started posting in feb but I got back into painting around xmas). I have run out of textured paint for my bases, but fear not more is on the way! Other projects I won't finish by the my year end deadline... I have 8 old school terradons which I'm splitting into the 3 cloudy blue ones I've posted earlier and a more heavily armed group of 5 jungle hunters. Cloudy blues are on hold while I figure out my vision for them, been setting up the jungle ones (the prototype is currently covered in shade). Going to try some yellow brown accents maybe tiger stripes, I've seen some pics around like that and its a nice contrast . Enough 5th edition, I'm also trying to decide on a more current project to work on, I have a bunch of 6th edition sculpts including these guys. Who i got cheap but were really gunked up by a half painted mishmash of styles. Been experimenting with pinesol and i'm having lots of success getting the worst of it off. I got 9 missing 1 arm (i'll convert up a halberd), bought the old 5 lizard command pack and stumbled into the old stardard bearer from the army box (Janf reacently painted one up nice so I wanted to give it a shot). I also really need a better work space but what can you do XD Mini update, greens on my terradons this time dry. Trying to use a light drybrush to really pic out the chunky scales on these old terradons.
It came at dusk, a sudden rustle in the canopy high above the adventurers. A dark shape, a rush of air and a blood curdling scream was the last we heard of Jerry... I really like how it's coming Can't decide if I need to do something else to the little scales covering it. I'm going to sleep on it.
I think it looks really cool! understated and natural looking. He could have really bright eyes if you wanted?
Nice work. Really like the shading and highlights on the Terradon looks great and i like the colors you chose.
Well thanks I think its growing on me. Always the worst critic of my own work. I have 3 more and my derpy dimorphodon sculpt champion to finish the unit. More picks as they come together.
I love how you painted the scales and the teeth. They look like something out of an old dinosaur movie. Fantastic detail! Spoiler
PRE PRE script..... (head desk) this is why you don't wake up groggily in the middle of the night misread a thing and start writing out long responses based on your misreading.... Sorry warden I somehow completely misread this and went into my insecurities on the paint scheme haha oh err Further proof that we are our own worst critic that I'm projecting my own worries about the scales onto others >.< The teeth actually are painted in 3 steps with rhinox skin, balor brown and ushapti bone much like the claws its less popping then straight skull white and ushapti bone plays a roll in a lot of highlighting. My scales problem... I am open to painting the scales but my problem has been coming up with a colour that looks good. I've kind of gone with a more natural tone but combined with the goofy skuplting job I was struggling to find a 3rd? colour that doesn't make the thing look hokey. This is why I'd settled on a lets just try to pick up more of the highlighting to make them seem more dry/crusty (edit this is actually an idea lifted from the 5th ed painting lizardmen section for making my dry crusty looking veterans) . I am open to suggestions though, what would work well with my olives and yellow/browns? Sell me on something I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas ps Note how even in your picture from 1million bc the dinosaurs are very samey none of the nobbly bits are painted differently. or note how this lizard has a bunch of nobbly's but not really a different colour highlighting them http://rivista-cdn.reptilesmagazine...-5663c5ce.jpeg?ver=1468547937&aspectratio=1.5 This was really my problem once i'd committed further down the root strarted with my Green/brown stegadon of a more drab naturalistic colour scheme is that they tend to be 2 colours at most. I'm almost more tempted to do something completely different on the throat like this fan lizard https://drscdn.500px.org/photo/37964636/q=80_m=1500/afe75470b16f18b9427ad7cd3b0dcfd1 Though the rider's legs might obscure it...
Well.... its been a while since i updated this. In fact its been about a year since I started posting here! Not bad for a years work. Not going to lie I've been loosing a bit of steam so I'm trying to work on a few fun projects instead of the legions of infantry left to paint. Work has also been a drag on my painting time and I've been playing Duelyst instead of painting. But fear not I havn't given up. When we last met my terradons still needed their riders well progress is being made on the 1st set of riders. Prototype on the left and the others are coming along quickly. Still need to work on their tandem copilots though. Its hard to be creative sometimes after work so I've been going back and working on some of my bases. Here's one of my 2 produce aisle skink units they're the latest unit to get some basing work just need to finish up the trim. I'll try to upload some stuff to the itza gallery in the future of some of my finished units. The obsevant may also have seen I'm trying to get pumped up for painting by doing a slann this month. Fresh from the meditative pinesol pool is the lesser mage priest of my 5th ed armies. Was planning to do a blue and yellow scheme but I'm liking the yellow so much i might try yellow and black instead Have a few ideas but I'll think on it some more. With the last few projects I've been trying to get over my long held dislike of painting yellows. I'm hoping to mod his master up as a slightly more dark powerful frog but we'll see. In the mean time one slann to lead the army. And that's where I'm at I have a new bastilodon from christmas, my metal kroqgar and some 7th ed terradons waiting in the wings as well once these projects are further along .
It is very easy to lose focus when you have a mountain to climb but small steps will eventually get you to the top, you have some great looking models so far. Keep up the good work and keep posting.
Really love your skinks. I am so glad you are repainting and redecorating the bases too, it looks so much better with the new brown rather than the old bright green!
It's nice to look over at the desk o models and see that roughly half are done Terrible pun Orange tint is also what happens when you use cassandora yellow spade. Yes well , was buying these skinks when they were new and I was a young little painter that didn't want to deal with flock etc Ugh err just paint em grass green it'll be fine! PS ok slann is definetly mainly yellow now
Ok so the yellow was going to blend in too much with a traditional white bone backing so I've trying a more fossilized look. This was my starting point reference for the kind of measure fossil look I was going for. http://g02.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1GXJ0...aur-Resin-Fossil-skull-Model-collectibles.jpg My results are not quite what i wanted but it was close I think i might want to increase the medium browns along that center strip along the back and maybe mute a highlight here or there but it's getting there.
Update time! Been busy and tired and a bit discouraged but here's where we're at. I alluded to this at the time but I tried adding some black spots to my slann to try to copy the very pretty yellow and black frogs in nature... I hated it. So much in fact that I dumped the whole model in pinesol and started over.... So after that setback where am I now? Just working on the tassels on the mace and then I think I'm pretty happy with this chunk. Just the standards and the palanquin bearers to go, making progress.
