Making a Gaming Table

So, this weekend's random project will be to make a gaming table. I'm going to update as I go so stay tuned...

I'm heading to get the supplies now

 

Yeah! I want to see how this goes,

 

Step one complete:


Ended up spending less than $100 in materials. I got:

(1) 1/2" thick
4x6' Sheet Plywood

(2) 3/4" thick
72" x 3" Wood Slates

(4) 3/4" thick
46 1/2" x 3" Wood Slates

and some 1 1/4" drywall screws



It will be sitting on a fold out table I already own.

Now let's start putting this together...

 

Ah yeah! Getting to the good stuff!

 

So starting, I take the first 72" slate and clamp it down flush.


Then I take my drill using a 1/8" drill bit and drill holes in it every 6".


Then I take the drywall screws and drill them in, just a tad deeper than flush with the wood.


I repeat these steps for the other 72" slate.

 

Then I take two 46 1/2" slates and wedge them on the other two ends. I essently do the same thing with drilling and putting in screws except I set the screws from the outside going in rather than from one end to the other.

And it starts to get dark, but I will not be stopped! So at this point we have this:


Not perfect but it works. Almost there...

Awesome. You now have the most crucial part of a gaming table finished, the table itself.

 

Ah yes, the Lumber lumber store, the lumberist of all lumber stores.

 

My guess is lumber, and lumber related products.

 

Chocolate cake.

 

That's about the only kind of lumber store I'd go near to be fair...

 

Thanks! And I hadn't thought of that though it's a good idea! Thinking of bumpers on the corners though to make it somewhat safe around kids.

They had cake there alright but I'm not quite sure it was chocolate...

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! This is my first project I've ever done like this actually.

 

This looks great! This is something I want to do as well someday!

Do you plan to create a "game room" as well?

Hopefully with a large terrain collection

 

Ok so to wrap this up! (Sorry work has been hectic this week).

So I don't have pictures remaining of my working in progress, but I do have final pics.

Basically, I marked with a pencil every two feet along the long edge of the table, that helped me place my two remaining 46 1/2" slates. I wedged them in making sure each end match straight with the pencil markings, then I drilled in the screws on either end as so:



Then, I used the tape measurer to make straight line from one screw to the other and drilled in five screws along the straight line ensuring it went in the slates.

And boom! It was done!


And there you have it folks! In summary it actually only took me about two hours to do and it's pretty simple, not as hard as you would think!

Not sure what is next on the agenda but stay tuned in the future! Thanks everyone for all the comments and enthusiasm! It really helped motivate me.

 

I totally encourage you to take the plunge and try it as it's not as bad as you would think! I literally have no woodworking skills and this was my first try! Note that I do not cut the wood, the lumber store will do that!

Actually, the table currently resides in what my wife refers to as my "geek room".
