Fantastic paintjobs, truely a level of skill to make one envious Especially in love with your earlier Stegadon, was thinking of doing the skin and scale color for mine the same way
Everyone wants to know the stone technique, hehe. I've explained it a couple of times but I really don't care to write it again: - Base of Dawnstone - Wash with Agrax Earthsade - Drybrush with Administratum Grey - Edge highlighting with Administratum - Edge highlighting with Ulthuan Grey - Glaze shadows and certain parts with Biel-tan Green That's it, pretty easy
I saw you mentioned that for the scales of your skinks you did the 3:1 lahmian - shade mix, I've attempted that with my Saurus Warriors but the few attempts I've had with it doesn't do their scales any justice, one of my attempts the scales actually just turned a slightly darker tone of the color and the mix itself just looked like a brighter version of the original color. So to get great looking scales with some decent highlights, how exactly do you go about it? It's one of the areas I feel I struggle the most with to get good results
For the scales I don't use shade. It's a mix of Kantor Blue and Lahmian Medium over the skin Basecoat. Key to me is using a tone that is the same rough colour (green, Blue, red, etc) but darker and also a different tone. For example my Skinks are basecoated in Baharroth Blue, which is a very light turquoise but the scales are Kantor Blue, which is blue, but a deep marine blue. Completely different tonal variation . As for highlights in my normal Skinks they have none, just the Kantor wash over the Basecoat. For my heroes y use Blue Horror, that complements very well the tonal variation too, a very light blue similar to Baharroth but different hue, more in line with a pure blue like Kantor. So for example if you went for a very bright lime green for the skin that has a lot of yellow in it (I think vibrant skin colours go very well with Lizardmen) I would go for a very deep wash of Caliban Green, that has a blue tone. Same goes for reds. An orange skin tone would go very well with scales painted in a very deep red, one with a bit of blue or purple subtones, but make sure it is still red. Hope that helps!
Ah ok, so for rank and file standard units it's just a kantor blue on the scales, and then when you hit the heroic units you start highlighting through what I'm assuming is a ton of work and practice? If I understand right, for the scales it's your Kantor Lahmian Mix > Manual highlighting of individual scales with Blue Horror and im assuming the extreme highlights you add some whites. And the mix of kantor : lahmian, is just applied directly onto the initial basecoat on the scales that is usually the same as the skins color? Also thank you for taking the time to reply
That is correct. Blue horror goes in the corners and tips of the scales. I dont go into white though for the highlights, just blue horror. I never use white for highlighting except if I want to paint white, that is why I love Citadel Range, the amount of amazing off-white and very bright pastel colours is amazing. My go to colours for extreme hightlights are ususally either Ulthuan Grey or Pallyd Witch Flesh, but as you see I use others as well like Blue Horror, Gauss Blaster Green, Dorn Yellow or Lugganath Orange.
Thanks! It's a good insight, was trying to visualize the process you go through to get the results you get, I've got myself another 12 saurus warriors and 15 temple guard to get through, so I'm thinking I'll give your method an attempt. Considering not highlighting scales on the standard Saurus Warriors though, the last 12 really killed me to go through and the result is not as good as I hoped it wouldd be
Don't do it, it's not worth the effort for basic infantry and the result is very good with just a wash. Good luck!
I will try to make a step by step guide on the Skinks in the near future. It seems like a highly requested thing.
Cant speak for everyone, but your style is quite similar to 'eavy metal from GW if not exactly the same, so any tips, step by steps or such you give out I'm sure people will love as that particular style looks great on GW miniatures
@Itepixcauh style is high contrast that's why it looks so good, he is very clever how he uses colour on a model, look how the red is offset with the blue and bone, the lining around the yellow eye etc etc. He also takes his time, painting slow is a gift and one that we could all use. Always excellent
Stunning as usual! Cold Ones look so strange Somehow, the newer and older models of cold ones look somewhat equally derpy but in their own way
This models are truly terrible, I love how charming they are but they are horrible miniatures. The Cold Ones are VERY old, those miniatures came out more than 20 years ago and it really shows, poor fitting, dreadful definition ...
