Now I've been here before, it seems like a annual event.

When do you have too many models?

I'm losing control, I'm not really buying models atm but I want too, Chaos Beasts I'm looking at you.

Now I currently have a mass of models and I'm debating cutting back to around 1500pts for each army this will mean a massive clearout of painted models.

It will raise funds (not that I need funds) and allow new armies to come in.

At the moment I have the following

    Seraphon 12000pts ish
    Maggotkin 5000pts ish
    Death 5000pts ish
    Ironjawz 3000pts ish

I've painted 10k worth of Seraphon, all the Maggotkin, 4k Death and none of the Ironjawz

First of all, are there any models that you’ve decided you really decided you don’t want? If so, I’d say sell them on - someone will give them a home. You only have too many models if there are any that you definitely aren’t going to use anymore. Those are the ones you must sell.

Second of all, when you’ve seen another army that’s caught your eye, think to yourself: Do you really want to play that army? Do you like the lore? Do you like the minis? Does the play style match your chosen way of playing? I’d say only start a new army if you answer yes to all three - that’s really how I chose Fyreslayers as my AoS army over all the others - The minis really look awesome in my view, the lore is surprisingly interesting for AoS lore (3/4 of the Battletome lore occurs before the Sigmarines were even created) and I’ve also been extensively researching their play style and tactics and I’ve felt they are for me.

I have more Seraphon than I would ever be able to play I love the models but do I need 3 carnys, 2 Trogs, 3 Slann etc etc

The pull for me is never will I play them or the lore, it's the models I love them all and would eventually love to have a army of each and every faction, maybe not an army but I think I'm at the point where terrain and single models are appealing to me more than armies.

Currently in my loft I have terrain that I want to do, Reamgates, Warscryer citadel, Sigmarite Mausoleum, Ophidian Archway, Arcane Ruins and numerous game tiles ideas.

    Does that make sense?

Never enough :) there can always be a purpose to a model - I would say pick something out (let’s say a carnosaur) you may have like 5 - you won’t ever need that many in game so do something new with them, you want beasts of chaos - how about make yourself a shaggoth using one carno (i will be doing it very soon) but the same can be done with almost anything, have fun and try something new :) (even if the model never gets used, it still enhances your skill etc)

Oh man I hope I never have to make such a decision. To me the idea of giving away a model I painted is kinda appalling.

...but then I only have been doing this for two years now, and I only have around 10,000 points of models I think.

When being used for AoS, even one model is too many! :D:D (sorry I couldn't help it)

Tabletop Minions has a video on not being a wargame hoarder in case anyone is interested :joyful::bag:

... I had to go back and check the GREAT MODEL LIST THREAD to be sure, but I see your point about having a lot of models. This hobby has a bunch of different aspects: collecting, building models or terrain, converting, painting, BASING, wargaming, but knowing when is enough (or too much?) is tough.

In looking through my collection, I have at least ~6000 Lizardmen (95% painted), ~4500 Bretonnians (85% painted), and small forces of WH40K space marines, orks, some KOW skeletons, some Test of Honour Samurai, and a smattering of Hordes Gatormen and other models painted. Unpainted I have a few gnoblars (for an ork project) and a Warmachine Cryx force that is completely unpainted that I bought for cheap, and a host of unpainted samurai. My thought process right now is mostly collecting and painting, but I try not to buy too much. I rarely buy models when they are brand new, and normally wait a long time to see if store/online discounts are possible. Right now I am happy with my collection as it is, and I have planned out future purchases pretty well in order to avoid a large backlog.

Maybe some bigger questions need to be answered first? What games do you tend to play more of: large-scale army clashes or more on the skirmish end of the spectrum? Smaller games will allow you to have a more "diverse" collection, sampling forces from each of the armies that interest you. Larger-scale games would require bigger investments, but if you never play any of those games it may be worth it to get rid of some after all. Getting rid of some of your beautifully painted minis that you spent hours on is a hard decision though :inpain:

For newer players I would suggest a monthly wargames budget mostly to help prevent "impulse buying" every time the big companies put out something new. It doesn't have to be tiny but it helps to prevent a ginormous backlog of models that will ultimately never get painted. :sorry:
What happens when the next awesome army update comes out? No time to buy the new hotness because you are still working on your old stuff, unless you are a speed painter like @NIGHTBRINGER :D

    Here’s my tuppence;

    Maggotkin :vomit: ghaaaackhh!
(sell immediately; with hazmat labeling.) :doctor:

    IronJawz
(sell or trade a unit or two at a time; help others complete their forces; but retain any that cause the thought: “I want to paint that, it is such great model kit.”)

Purchase a display case for downstairs to proudly feature your best painted examples. Pursue the hobby in collect-paint-&-display mode with regard to some models. Mentally remove them from the gaming piece category.

    Don’t sell any Seraphon.

Haha, I have a small wall cabinet full and an Ikea floor standing cabinet full and 8 drawers in the loft full of painted models.

90% in the cabinet are Seraphon

I sold a painted Arkhan for £90 so I’m not to worried about selling painted models, they all sell over seas.

I know I've been slowly getting rid of models, only just to be replaced by something different :p
I've been in this debate with some of my Dark Elves, I never seem to use them much now. I was able to make use of my Sorceress for something else. Such hard decisions because will they be part of something great later on? Then lately it's just me liking some parts of an army and end up with some things thyt can't be used unless I convert them or buy the rest to make them useable

I've made my mind up now.

I'm cutting all the armies back to around 1500 pts and the rest is getting sold before Christmas.

I will do a list on here as all the Seraphon are painted and somebody might want some of the models.

To be honest, I remember when you posted the thread about starting a Destruction faction and when you chose Ironjawz. To have bought all those Ironjawz and not even painted them is a bit of a waste. Why not get your money’s worth out of all 3000 points of them and continue to experiment with army lists of them, and sell some of your Death, Seraphon and Maggots.

Also if I recall, didn’t your son play Maggots in a battle report you posted on this forum? Aren’t any of the minis his? He may have some claim to it all.

I will probably only sell the painted stuff and Archie is now a Seraphon/Death player like me so we are still talking about the maggots but around 8k of Seraphon will be sold, that leaves me with plenty.

You play AoS and are selling 8k of Seraphon. I play WFB and I am selling none!

    Just saying!

Have to agree with @Crowsfoot here - I don’t see the point in having minis you’re not going to use, which is why I’m considering taking an ancient Harlequin jet bike I got from an uncle of mine a while back to the shop where I bought those old Night Goblin bits and Lizardmen. I don’t like Harlequins much at all, so why have it in one of my hobby boxes gathering dust when I could give it to a place where a Harlequin fan who will treasure it can find it?
