Hi all, as mentioned on the forum sometime before I have an idea for an Armies on Parade display. This idea requires a lot of work and so I might(read: will) skip some AoP before entering. Though most of this AoP idea is still in the thinking and planning process I'd like share my plans, thoughts and questions with you. And of course there will be pictures if there is progress So thanks for your interest and Commend and Critics are welcome. Gr, Imrahil
The Display (2020.02.03) The Army (2019.02.24) Total army picture Seaguard king(?) and his banner bearer (conversion of a crewmember from the Skycutter and banner) Seaguard unit from the starter box 'Island of Blood' High elf Mage and Lord on Griffon also from the 'Island of Blood' Starter box
The idea and inspiration The idea starts with an Warhammer Fantasy army I stepped into, right before stepping a way from the hobby for a while. High elf Seaguards, the love for this part of the Elven army was triggered by the Dual box Island of Blood, in which a regiment of Seaguards is featured including the command group, captain, musician and banner bearer. after getting my hands on just that unit from the set I did buy some extra Seaguard spearmen and a couple of Seaguard Skycutters. Being very fond of the sea-themed Elves I couldn't go past the fact that Skycutters are just flying dinghies. This didn't feel right. Further then those models there was not much to go on. So I stood a while in the middle of my local GW-store, thinking what will go for an Elven warship. Then I looked at an Dark Eldar(Drukhari) Raider, boom that would do nice as a warship, meddle with all the exhausts and stuff and it would work very nice. After this I'd really liked to build a piece of scenery around this army. Not being that gifted with scenery and lacking the time at that moment it all stayed at the idea stage. But over time a picture formed in my head of a harbor in which the Raider would fit nicely. Last year an a half I got back in the hobby and over time was giving this idea some more thought. As you sometimes do with thoughts, I put them on to paper, sketching out in general what I wanted from a harbor and especially an Elven one. Here is the first plan drawing: Second drawing: And building layout: Numbers explained: 1 House 2 Some sort of shop, fish and foods. 3 House 4 Warehouse with Crane to (un)load ships 5 House/watchtower 6 Gate and wall section including tower and square with tree 7 statue at the end of the pier either Neptune/Poseidon or a Elven Hero Knowing where to go with the layout of the harbor I started on looking for pieces that I could use for this purpose. At first I was looking at the offers of GW for buildings, like the house of Laketown from LotR , downside to this is mainly the price tag. Because building a total harbor would require at least 6 of those or even more. The same with the embankments of the harbor which I based on pieces of railway scenery by Noch. Than I came across a YouTube video on $1 Store foam house by Black Magic Craft: This ignited a spark for building the scenery of the harbor from scratch. This is how far I am now
As seen above I will keep the status of the project up to date. Also I will post my idea an inspirations for this project soon. Just so this isn't an empty thread. Feel free to commend or give advice, much appreciated Gr, Imrahil
I think that would look pretty good. I would have to look up other elfish armies on parade to get ideas. I have never gone and done one before, good luck!
I editted in the other drawings I had lieing around at work. The numbering is to do with the amout of features I need to build a part from the piers itself. Numbers explained: 1 House 2 Some sort of shop, fish and foods. 3 House 4 Warehouse with Crane to (un)load ships 5 House/watchtower 6 Gate and wall section including tower and square with tree 7 statue at the end of the pier either Neptune/Poseidon or a Elven Hero All of those(except #7) I plan to build from scratch. And I want to be able to use all of them separately as well. Easier for transport and I can use them as scenery during battles. So that's it for the update now. Status updates will come soon Gr, Imrahil
Last weekend I started experimenting with building houses in de 'same' way as the Black Magic Craft video to see how this would fan out for the building I tent to make. I did use isolation foam that I had lieing around anyway, this feels a bit more sturdy than the foam he uses. So I will have to see how making woodgrane will turn out. For now I have drawn the dimensions and started the outerwalls and roof: Gr, Imrahil
Update on the display: I am not sure about the shape of the gates and walkway on the wall, a bit to east-ish. Also House(#1) isn't jet visualized properly It looks really something already, the main problem coming is making the picture reality Gr, Imrahil
I'm loving this whole idea! I get what you mean about the arches, I think a more pointed arch would suit HE better
Thanks! I have seen some of those around. Somehow I always thought Elfish architecture to be round and smooth shaped. That is why it seems east-ish now... Seeing these pictures it is more high and narrow shaped buildings. Time to head back to the drawing board Gr, Imrahil
It took a while but I have been drawing something up: This is a design for a cornerhouse. I am fine with it for now, further detailing will be done when All designs are ready. I am struggeling with a design for multistory buildings in this style. Let me know what you think. Grrr, Imrahil
Tonight I had the time and motivation to pick this piece up again. I am really happy with how the door turned out. I stil need to add the wooden beams and pillars and all of the shingles. Also I need to find a new basing spray. I found out, at the last batch of base coating, that my current spray reacts with the foam in an unpleasant way (it eats the heart and soul out of it) Maybe I need to switch to actual GW basing spray. Grrr, Imrahil
