Cannot blame modern marketing on that one. The early Catholic Church used Christmas to overwrite and counteract Saturnalia which still lingered in various forms well after people stopped worshiping the Roman pantheon because Saturnalia was a cesspool of debauchery. One part I liked is Trick or Treating on Steroids. Crowds would go around wealthy neighborhoods with torches basically demanding "Give us food and booze or we'll set your house on fire!" Now it's we won't leave until we get some figgy pudding.
This one is SO true. I was 1 foot shorter than EVERYONE in my class from age 7 to age 14. During those years I had some VERY VERY dark thoughts about what I would do to those who mocked me during this period. Bugs Bunny had nothing on my imagination at that time.
It is amazing how many medieval sieges were just a big pile of waiting to see what happened. That said, this amuses me for other reason. I grew up watching these cartoons with my dad. Bugs Bunny just brings up fond memories of him laughing at the cartoons.
