Based on my historically vehement opposition to Age of Sigmar, I suppose this requires a bit of explanation on my part.

Firstly, it is getting harder and harder to secure WFB games (even Mrs. NIGHTBRINGER is less inclined to play it nowadays). Furthermore, 8th edition forum content and interaction is so scarce these days that it is no longer sufficient to satiate me between actual games. Up until now I've happily gotten by with the morsels of WFB gaming available, but the ever declining interest in the game has reached a tipping point and turned it nonviable (at least on its own). As such, I definitely don't plan to abandon WFB, but I have come to feel that I may need to supplement it with another game.

The second factor, and the one that finally got me on board was that I have a couple of friends who very recently got into AoS (they're new to mini wargaming altogether). Despite my best efforts to get them on board with WFB, they don't really want to start an abandoned and unsupported game. TOW is too far away and too little is known about the game, so that wasn't an option either. They like a fantasy setting over science fiction and decided to go with AoS.

So here we are! I'm sure I'll get some (admittedly deserved) friendly jabs in the form of "I told you so" or "it's about time" or "I knew you would break eventually". In truth, if the roles were reversed, I might very well do the same... in a friendly way of course. ;)

With that out of the way, my next step is to pick an army. As I mentioned before, I'm not quitting WFB (only supplementing it), so I've decided to keep all my current armies [WoC, TK, Lizardmen and Chaos Dwarfs] on their square bases and for use in WFB only. So the plan then is to pick up a brand new army that will be entirely dedicated for AoS. That will mean I'll have 4 WFB armies and 1 AoS army... which feels about right. Since the world is currently shut down due to COVID-19, I have a little bit of time to decide which army to choose.

I'm currently trying to decide between the following three...
    • Kharadron Overlords
    • Daughters of Khaine
    • Ogor Mawtribes
Aesthetically my favorite are the KO, but from what I have read here, they are pretty weak from a gaming perspective. I don't necessarily need a top tier army, but I don't really want to start off with a bottom tier one either. Also, having just acquired my beloved Chaos Dwarfs, I'm not sure if another Dwarf army is the right way to go anyways. Another factor will be the financial cost to start up a decent sized force, which means I'll have to do some price crunching :greedy:. If the financial cost is relatively similar, I'll probably go with the Daughters of Khaine, but the Ogors are pretty cool too. My one friend picked up Indoenth Deepkin as her army and my other friend will be fielding those butt ugly (IMHO) Ossiarch Bonereapers as his.

So there we have it. I suppose even an old Slann can learn new tricks... but I still hate the SCE! (and that will never change!)

Exactly what I was thinking - are you sure this isn’t just an April Fools’ Day joke? :p

If it isn’t, I’ll be the first to welcome you to AoS, the game isn’t as tactical as Fantasy, but it’s better than the mess that was First Edition :D I’m actually still busy making Fantasy stuff and haven’t got many Fyreslayers yet, but I enjoy theoryhammering with them in these dark times and I’ve also been creating an unofficial progression of Tomb Kings for the AoS era, with Settra as a massive golden animated statue thirsting to ruin Nagash’s entire career:
    http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/the-nehekros-imperishables-an-unofficial-aos-faction.24478/

As for official army choice, I’d say go either Kharadron or Ogres. Loads of people play Daughters of Khaine, so while your two new AoS gaming buddies don’t play them, you will likely meet someone who does at some point, and unless you fancy playing a Civil War, it might not be as fun as it could be if you played one of the cooler armies (not to mention Morathi is both very costly and pretty impractical to store). Also, do you like playing as a glass cannon army? If you don't, I'd advise you look elsewhere.

From what I read, the new Kharadron aren’t amazing, but they’re better than they were and can allegedly beat some of the top armies pretty easily, despite being beatable by some of the lower-tier ones, so they’re a mixed bag. If you want to stay back and blast the living nargle-fodder out of the enemy, they're a good faction to pick. Of course the models look brilliant, but their ships are bloomin’ expensive :inpain:

Ogres may look costly to buy, but like their Fantasy cousins you’ll only need to buy a few of them because they’re also expensive in points, so their costs have a bit more justification. If you like beating stuff up in combat with individually powerful fighters, these lads are a good pick. Also if you’re gaming buddies play Order and Death, it might be fun to play Destruction to provide some additional army variety in your little circle, and given that the Ogre army is practically unchanged since Fantasy, it’ll give you some fond memories of your favourite game ;)

    Hope this helps :)

He hasn't fallen, he's still playing Fantasy, he's just decided to start AoS to supplement it, if you noticed on his post. You can still be a Knight of Eight and play AoS as long as you still actively play Fantasy. I've been messing with AoS stuff recently and still regularly play Fantasy at home.

Nice to see you starting it up.

For your armies, I recommend Ogors or KO. Both are okay, and are cheaper to put together in a competitive manner than DoK, who require huge blobs of Witch Aelves who come 10 per $50 box ....
Of course, all three play well. DoK is very competitive in one certain build, Ogors is a very monster mash heavy army if you want to be competitive. For KO, it's yet to be entirely seen what is the too list, though there are several ideas and builds to be found among it's pages.

    Good luck!

    Clever lad!

    :D

The simultaneous Skaven incursion surely did not help my attempt at subterfuge. That, and some of you know me too well!

Not to worry! I who am eternal, can never be defeated!

To those who offered genuine advice, thank you kindly. I hope my little joke is taken in the same good spirits with which it was created. :)

Well, the one thing that did keep me suspicious was that you’d never advocated any interest in Ogres until now, but otherwise you sold that very well. The fact that you mentioned your two favourite factions (Kharadron and Daughters of Khaine) made it all the more convincing.

However, I wonder if an April Fools joke counts as a legitimate use of a thread on this forum, what do you think @Scalenex?

It was all in good fun, so it's fine. Also, I didn't notice. On April Fools I spend most of my time on L-O looking for reactions to the L-O staff's annual prank. And I was buried in Youtube videos so I wasn't on L-O as much as usual.

Well played Nightbringer, it's nice to see you get in on the fun.

If I was paying attention I would have responded like this.

I just finished reading my 8th edition Ogre Kingdoms books so I thought I'd throw them in there to spice things up!

    Thank you! :)

Advice still stands though. If you're ever even slightly inclined.

As soon as I saw @NIGHTBRINGER put up the post on the profile flicker, I knew what it was. But I figured I would help with the joke! ;)

@Scalenex and @The Red Devil did a fantastic job with the banner art, change of profile pictures and I loved the Lion King song adaptation from Scalenex.

Was a brilliant first April Fools for me on LO!

I noticed this thread only today.
Fun fact: after reading the title and seeing that @NIGHTBRINGER was the OP, I immediately checked the day it was published… :p

Only then i enjoyed the reading of the OP (a very well played joke!) and the reactions. :D

It was a well done joke.
As a long time member I saw right through it (it was too much of a stretch, that hate of SCE isn't that easy to overcome and you didn't even mention them) but it was still cool. :)
