Let's assume that Games Workshop decided to cut back on some of the 8th edition armies when transitioning to The Old World (maybe to make room for new stuff or some other reason entirely). If they came up to you and you could pick 5 armies that wouldn't get the ax, which 5 armies would you choose to keep in the new game?

**I should clarify that these should be the 5 least expendable armies to you personally, not which you feel the community at large would find the least expendable.

This was a pretty easy question for me and I made my choices based on the following:

    The 3 armies I own:
    • Warriors of Chaos
    • Lizardmen
    • Tomb Kings
The 1 army I am most interested in acquiring:
    • Chaos Dwarfs
    My wife's army:
    • Wood Elves

If I were to deviate away from the poll/topic question and take a stab at what are the 5 least expendable armies to the game/lore in general (putting personal feelings aside), I'd go with...
    • The Empire
    • High Elves
    • Dwarfs
    • Orcs & Goblins
    • Daemons of Chaos OR Warriors of Chaos (either could fill the role)

Sigh... if I'm picking 5 armies to absolutely keep, then I agree with @NIGHTBRINGER in the second half of his post.

I'd keep Empire, Warriors or Daemons of Chaos, High Elves, Dwarfs and Orc & Goblins. I suppose that's just the "generic fantasy" coming out in me, but those armies seem pretty cemented in Warhammer lore/gameplay.

Not even my mighty Lizardmen make that cut (what have I done?!!).

    Edit:
However, if I were to add one more, b/c I think there should be an even number of armies to face off against each other, then it would probably be Skaven (they're such a cursed nuisance to everyone).

I'd keep Lizards cause you can't have Warhammer without lizards, just not possible.

High Elves due to their Dragons, Phoenixes and Eagles.

Dark Elves as they have hydras, Kharibdyss and Executioners.

Tomb Kings because those constructs are hella awesome.

Wood Elves cause of their trees.

I've actually pretty much only chosen the elves because of the stuff they have that isn't an elf :p

I don't know what your complete list of 5 would be, but I'd guess that The Empire and Vampire Counts would make the list. ;)

Kidding aside, I'd say Dwarfs, Lizardmen, Tomb Kings and Bretonnia all have a good shot.

#1) Empire. Because they are the face of Warhammer (and have the Warhammer)

#2) Warriors of Chaos. The big bads and enemies of the Empire.

#3) Dwarfs. Beer, Beards, Grudges, and Grumbling.

#4) Orcs and Goblins. See opposite things from #3.

#5) This one was tough, so I tossed in the high elves because they will definitely have some kind of elf faction, and wood elves might become just tree people.

Lizardmen are high on my wishlist of course.

Honorable mention goes to Vampire Counts because I doubt we will go without undead, and they are more likely than tomb kings by far mostly because they still exist in production.

(Dis) Honorable mention to the skaven too.

An enough easy pick for me:

    Top list:
    Lizardmen
    Tomb kings

    The other ones:
    Dwarfs
    Skaven
    Wood Elves

i don't care about humans and chaos things… because i know some of them will be included regardless my votes (Empire and WoC, I'm looking at you). :p
My 6th vote would go to O&G.

I did the 4 armies that I own and Dwarves as they were the first I ever owned and still have a niche in my heart. You can’t have a fantasy world without dwarves!

For me, it would have to be:
    - Empire (iconic and SHOULD include Kislev, Halflings and such)
    - Dwarves (Seriously? If we DON'T include them, they'll add us to the Book of Grudges!)
    - High Elves (Again, kind of iconic - it was a toss up between these and the Vampire Counts, both were big back in the day)
    - Orcs & Goblins (...I like goblins, okay? They're probably THE most iconic enemy for EVERY army in the game)
    - Warriors of Chaos (Again, the iconic bad guys. You kind of have to include them)

What I WANT isn't on the list.
DOGS OF WAR!!! I want my mercs back! And my Dark Elf Cityguard, but still...

Goh this is a difficult one... No one likes to cutt out armies. Lets just hope they all make the cutt.

    Drop the 'newer armies'

    Orge kingdoms
    Tomb kings

And just make chaos one big army again :)

And Empire too. I suppose lizardmen are taken for granted and so votes went to "something else other than we"

Ahh this is tough. If I said what I think will be included, this would be my list:
    • The Empire (You can't have Warhammer without the Germans in pajamas. They're the protagonists. Also, they have the Warhammer)
    • Warriors of Chaos (Bad Guys)
    • O and G (My 3rd fav faction after Lizzies and Beastmen, and they're super iconic)
    • Dwarves (Classic and support characters for the Germans)
    • Vampire Counts (Again, super iconic)
    And my personal top 5:
    • Lizardmen (Aztec Lizardpeople riding dinosaurs. The best army)
    • Beastmen (The amount of the word 'Gor' in their army list entries is ridiculous. Really fun faction)
    • Orcs and Goblins (Arachnarok spiders)
    • Tomb Kings (Super unique)
    • Wood Elves (Pretty amazing looking minis)

I like your personal top five list. Especially the Tomb Kings entry. One of my favourite (and least powerful :( ) armies.

Yeah sadly beastmen are in the same bag. They're super weak in any game, even with extra points.

    Armies I own:
    1. Chaos Dwarfs
    2. Dwarfs (proper ones, not AOS fire or steampunk)
    3. Lizardmen
    4. Daemons (Nurgle themed)
    5. Chaos (Nurgle themed) (Guess I like Nurgle)
    6. Ogres
    7. Orcs and Goblins
    ......
    8. Bretonnian (in boxes, still to paint and see the light of day)

Ideally I'd like all of them to make it into the new Old World
