I like the idea of a golem activated by Ur-gold runes. Based on the some of the artwork, maybe even Fyreslayer cavalry or slayers on flying dragons (not unlike Terradon/Ripperdactyl units). That could give them a unit with a little speed and/or flight. Perhaps a flame cannon or artillery piece?
Forget runic golems. For fyreslayers i would like some... monstrous cavalry, ala Necropolis Knights. Lava Worms, or Lava Snakes. that spits lava. that would stay in the theme of "magma mosters", but increasing the range outside magmadroths.
That would be a cool idea as well, I just thought rune-empowered animated Dwarf statues would still be thematic given the artwork with the statues. The fact that the statues would resemble Grimnir or famous Slayers would mean they'd fit in well enough with the army, especially given Sylvaneth have that chitinous worm endless spell that doesn't fit in with them at all appearance-wise.
That First picture has some sort of flying drake in it, that would be a great new unit for Fyreslayers. they need a fast attack unit, and it wouldn't be a magmadroth or a naked dorf… lol
That artwork is absolutely baller and it reminds me somewhat of the Hobbit when you get to see the inside of the mountain. I apologize to anyone liking Fyreslayers, but holy shit actually seeing those half naked manbabies in artwork looks incredible stupid imo. I dont get why anyone thought "hey lets make them semi naked, that'd be cool". If they had armor on it'd be sweet, but as is, hell no.
They might be able to use a fast attack unit, but doesn't that kind of go against how their army plays as a whole though? Isn't slow and immovable kind of part of their playstyle?
If they had armour on, it would miss the point of them being Fyreslayers in the first place, because they’re supposed to be the successors to the old Warhammer Fantasy Slayer Cult who also wore very little in the belief that it was dishonourable to cower behind armour. Slayers and Fyreslayers are based largely upon Celtic Fanatics and Viking Berserkers in actual history, who eschewed armour to display their bravery and seek a glorious death in battle. That’s not a problem given the Fly special rule can be given to a model with any movement value in AoS. Besides, Magmadroths move 12” which is pretty fast compared to the Fyreslayer infantry, so for a flying dragon you could give them the same move value plus the Fly rule, and it wouldn’t look too out of place. A flying cousin of the Magmadroth would be fun!
Interesting, perhaps it’s something to do with Malekith’s Shadow Daemons or something Chaotic for Warcry? This looks like it comes from the same range - Tyranid-esque wings but not quite, and chains with skulls on them. Again I’m calling Malekithian Shadow Daemon.
Another likely undead image. Looks like a possible bone wing with stretched skin. OR, maybe the ideas about vampire pirates is correct and this is a sail with bone masts and chain rigging?
Meh given how little of the slayercult actually made it into the fyreslayers beyond the visuals they should've introduced at least some with armour, even if it's purely ceremonial and useless in acual battle (e.g. armour made a material that's not hard enough to be usefull like say gold). It would've given them more to work with visually instead of everything being a variation of "naked dwarf with axe and a mowhawk". Also, wasn't the whole slayer cult idea that they sought out death for an honourable cause. Going as far as to specificly forbid pointless deaths. So aren't they technicly completly fine with wearing armour, provided it ultimatly still results in a worthwhile death for an honourable cause? For example to take down a particularly big threat against whom charging in without armour is pointless. I mean, they're also not allowed to say, charge out of a city on their own during a siege into the 10.000 orks besieging the settlement because they'd be much more usefull defending the walls. And what are walls if not very big armour . Similarly, Ungrim has to wear armour, cuz his duties as a king are too important for him to just go off and get himself killed. So in short, wouldn't a slayer be allowed to wear armour if it serves a big enough cause which ultimatly still results in honourable death? When they mentioned "fast attack unit" I was thinking of something more like terradons or rippers, so a fast non-behemoth. Which imho doesn't fit very well with the fyreslayers. If it's just another behemoth then sure I guess, behemoths tend to move in the range of 10-12" anyway, so none of them are really slow in the same way the fyreslayer infantry is slow. But imho, if it's merely another behemoth it's a much less interesting addition. The fabric looks an awefull lot like a sail. But the 2nd bone thing is kinda weird for a sail. Either that or maybe the wing of an undead dragon/bat/thing which inexplicabbly has some chains attached to it.
Bat-like wings are prevalent on a number of different monsters, including the Dark Elf Black Dragon, so it could still be Malekith Shadow Daemons if they’ve sprouted bat wings.
No, because in their view wearing armour of any sort automatically downgrades your death to be less honourable because you died while hiding in your armour, while dying in battle of any sort without armour, even if it looks as though your death was wasted, is still an honourable death because you displayed the bravery required to not wear any armour. As for defending a settlement’s walls, heed the old Welsh proverb, “It’s easy to be brave behind a castle wall.” Ungrim is a special case because he is the Slayer King and as you say his duties are too important, but then every leader of the world even today has special treatment, even when he’s a commoner like a President.
Yeah ungrim is the variant of slayer that is locked in constant "what the hell" or "huh?" State, since his duty as a king is to protect his hold yet his duty as a slayer is to die in a meaningful way
Yeah I totally get it is a faction based on the old Slayers, but having an entire army of mass manbabies running around in just diapers really loses its appeal to me. If it was a single unit of berserkers juiced up on some strong stuff I'd be all over it, but seeing an entire race like that inside the mountain and fighting outside seems so odd. I guess each to their own.
I know what you mean - I gave in (largely due to group pressure from my mates, but also because it was late and we had a drink or two) this friday and purchased an entire SoB army. I have had a couple of games (5 by now) and it is so much fun moving huge ass models around the table instead of like 100 lousy little Skinks.
