Okay, so I did the first base coat of green on their bodies. As per the Rhodes Codes, this was the first thin layer for their bodies. I think I'll do a white with green for horns and toes, pink for mouth and white with yellow for the eyes.

    We'll see how it goes!

That is a good start, already a Nurgley look.

There are a lot of conflicting views on priming out there. If you have the time and inclination, it's actually worth it to try everything, and see what works best for you in different situations. Don't feel like you need to pick one style and straight commit.

As a benchmark, here's my general approach:

    Default:
When in doubt, or if I just don't have the time to get fancy, I just prime black. You can almost never go wrong with a black primer coat, with one big exception...

    Is It Yellow?
If I'm painting something with a lot of Yellow, I'll prime White. Building up yellow over a black primer is the worst...

Do I want to get Fancy?
If I want to get fancy, I'll do a three colour zenithal prime with Black, a 45-degree layer of Grey, and a light touch of White from directly overhead. Then I'll start layering on glazes of my basecoat colour while feeling super hardcore about my painting...

Welcome back to the hobby. Glad @Imrahil motivated your return to the brush.

Second thin green base paint done. Takes a lot longer than I think it would...

I believe Beasts of Nurgle should be based on 40X40mm.

(Although, aesthetically they look much nicer on those larger bases... 50x75mm?)

@NIGHTBRINGER you're correct on the beasts, but I measured the toads and they don't actually fit, so I'll stick with these bases.

Okay, so I did the pink base coat for the mouths and tongues... not sure about it to be honest and one of them looks like Heath Ledger's Joker... anyways, I'll see how I feel when they've been highlighted, shaded etc.

Also became apparent that I missed a bunch of spots with the green coat.. annoying.

Anyways, I decided that since these are my first models on restarting that I'm just going to soldier on with my plan and get it to some kind of a product, then go back and watch more painting instruction videos.

It's tough to judge a paint job after only the base coat. You have plenty of opportunity to alter the colour through shading, washes, glazes, highlights, etc.

I think it looks good so far.

    Thanks mate!

So I've done second pink basecoat and first horn/claw base coat of Corax White mixed with a little Deathguard Green. Tonight I'll do the second basecoat of this and then start highlighting.

Any advice for handling touch-ups on slippage from anyone? (accidentally putting pink where it's supposed to be green, etc) IMG_20210221_011130.jpg

    Good work sofar
They seem to come alive somewhat now ;)

I usualy Just paint straight over the slippage when it is dry, but I do not delute my paints, so I am not sure if this works good/fast with deluted paint.

It's an easy fix (and happens to everyone). Just paint over it with a quick coat or two. The general advice given to people is not to worry too much when making your base coats. Obviously one doesn't want to be overtly sloppy with their base coats, but a little slip here or there is very easily fixed. It is only once you start applying your washes/highlights/etc, that you really want to go more slowly and carefully. At that point, mistakes take longer to fix.

Don't overthink the touch-ups too much. Just paint over them sometime when you haven't had too much coffee to hold a brush steady. It is definitely possible to get into a downward spiral of see-sawing touchups across a colour boundary...

Okay, so last night I did the dry-brushing and shading. I'm fairly happy with the models so far to be honest.

I'll do the highlighting and basing and then call it a day. The basing I should have put actual gravel on the base, but I think it might be a little late now...

I don't remember the base paint that I got, but apparently I can just slap that stuff on and it wil give the base texture?

Any advice welcomed for that bit.

    Thanks guys.

All I'm gonna say is thank god for YouTube! If I'd been able to watch these instruction videos as a kid, I probably would have continued painting... Ah well, nothing to be done for it now.

    They look very good.
    All Nurgle-y.

For basing with paints you could take a look at the technical paints of GW.
Tutorial links in the describtion of the paints.
For sure there will be alternative from other brands.

Highlighting done. I've ordered 40mm by 40mm bases so that I can use them as proper Beasts of Nurgle proxies (and have also ordered three Rot Toads to make it so I can put together a unit as needed or two flankers) so I'll switch them over and then do the basing.

These are looking really good. It would seem that your statements have undersold your talent.

I can think of a couple of strategies to employ to help them rank up better if they overhang their bases.

Hey, I'm more surprised than anyone! But the major difference is the Rhodes videos and the one from Guy of MidWinterMinis. Made a huge difference (and the last time I tried, I literally did each of the mistakes that they talked about).

Well for the time being, I'm going to make a metal sheet which is 150mm across so that they can be as close as possible and obviously magnetize them.

These look pretty disgusting, so well done on that! ;)

Does the result feel like there are more self painted models to come?
