And no shenanigans allowed! For instance, if you didn't choose to keep art, you wouldn't be able to view art in your books or on Facebook if you kept those (any parts that contain art would simply be missing for you).... etc. Also you can't claim Cinema for "free" by lumping it in with art. Basically... no freebies! ***books include physical copies, digital and audio. ***if you want music in your cinema, you need to choose to keep music as well
I voted Books, Coffee, Cinema but I changed my mind! Books and Coffee stay. Books are an invaluable asset, a source of information, entertainment and artistic expression. I don't read nearly enough of them, but I still think they're 100% necessary for civilisation as a whole to progress. Edit: I re-read this and realise this statement is kind of inflammatory. I'm sorry, it's not intended to be. I rushed and I'm having trouble rephrasing it right now. I'll have another crack at it with a clearer head later on. Coffee.... well I need coffee. I have 2 kids and work in telecommunications. I. NEED. COFFEE! Cinema I changed my mind on. If we keep books, I don't NEED cinema at all. I thoroughly enjoy movies, but I thought about it and realised I haven’t actually WATCHED many movies in the past few years. The last thing I actually saw in a cinema was Avengers: End Game. I'd actually prefer to keep music over cinema.
Might just be my mindset at the moment (and need of more coffee. See my original post...), but reading my bit about books I got a distinct "your culture is only valuable if you use written words" vibe off my own words there. Totally not intended.
At first, it seemed a really hard choice, but when i sterted pondering on it, it was easier. Most of all the question is: there is a viable alternative to the loss? BOOKS: once i couldn't live without them, but actually i read much less. A sad choice, but... there are comics, and things as Sandman are great literature WINE / BEER: so good, but i have alternatives if i want alcooholic beverages (spirits) CATS: i have a cat. i cannot just leave her this way, so this is almost forced. first pick. MUSIC: no alternatives available. This is the second pick. ART: i can live without it, I have the music and the graphic novels TEA: i like it, but i can live without it. DOGS: i like them, but i don't have a dog, so... CINEMA: i hope i can still watch TV series... COFFEE: i love it, and there's no alternative. Almost surely this is the third pick. FACEBOOK: lol no. CHOCOLATE: i love chocolate. but if I'm forced, i could live with other desserts. yep.
I disagree with such statement. By this reasoning, if i want to have music, i must pick art, because music is art. So, cinema MUST come with music and art, no other possible choices. Feels kinda forced. I could avoid books because comics are no books ad so i could still read something, but comics are visual art, so it would mean i couldn't read anything ever. Really "art" is too much a big field.
In my experience, whenever I put forth a poll like this, people try to exploit loopholes, things such as... "I don't need music because I can listen to any song I want in a movie" "I don't need art, because I can just choose books and view all the art in the world in books" It's funny, whenever I discuss these scenarios with people that don't play wargaming, such stipulations are not required. I agree with you that it is a bit forced, but a necessary evil. Otherwise the question shifts to how someone can exploit the categories, rather than choosing between them as intended. I'd argue that a comic book is still a book.
Agree with the 'art' problem. Music for example is clearly art, and so are movies. Question about Cinema: So I can watch all movies, just not in the cinema, right?
So if you chose to keep art, you get all art outside of art that is comprised of any of the other categories (music and movies) If you choose not to keep art, but you keep music, you lose all art besides music. Yup! You could!
Books: Books are needed, especially when I have to go without some of the other stuff. Wine: meh. I like a good wine now and then, but I can do without. Cats: I love cats! Music: I want music. Art: I assume right now you mean only statues and pictures to look at. That "fine arts" kind of stuff. I don't really need those. Beer: This is a tough one. I like beer. But I'd rather do without beer than without cats or music. Tea: meh. I like a good tea now and then, but I can do without. Dogs: does this include hot dogs? I like to look at pictures of dogs (the non-hot kind) now and then. Are those art or dogs?. But I don’t need either. Cinema: I rarely go and usually don't enjoy the experience, so I wouldn't miss it. Coffee: meh. I like coffee but I can do very well without. Facebook: LOL definitely not. Chocolate: meh. There are other sweets I like more.
Wait wait wait. ALL other art? Including computer games? Photos of ducks? People dancing in the streets? Beautiful houses? Poetry? Warhammer figurines? The shape of my car? That's ridiculous. What about operas? Are those music or art? There are literally dozens other forms of art.
yeah, but the song is tied to the movie. Unless you are seeing a musical, you will basically never have a complete song. You have the movie as it was made, no more, no less. Certainly you cannot have the "movie soundtrack" CD. The amount of songs and music you can hear from a movie is good, but they will be mostly incomplete, and you will never be able to "just enjoy the song". In the same way, you need to include the "artistic" part in a media, be it a book or a movie. Movies can win awards for best cinematography, which is definitely a visual form of art. Does this means that if i try to watch "Revenant", a good half of the movie will be black screen? That said, if comics and any written things fall under "books", i am probably going to change my vote... sorry, mr. coffee.
Hot dogs are different. You can not choose dogs and still enjoy all the hot dogs you want! I think we might be pushing the definition of art a bit too far. If a kid sits down and plays 18 hours of Fortnite or Call of Duty, I don't think he could claim that he is partaking in art. If the photo of the duck is in a museum, then it is off limits. But if it is just a regular photo... have at it.
Across all movies you could probably listen to a very large percentage of music (at least the popular stuff) while it plays during the end credits. If you were to argue that we simply discount the end credits, but in-movie music stays, I'd say that makes sense. Let's refine our definition of art to "fine art". The typical things that people first think of when the word art is used: paintings, sculptures, etc. (typical museum / art gallery stuff)
Honestly seem like the widest options, surprised there weren't more votes on art. Food items, drinks and pets are simply too specific given how many alternatives there are - they just can't really compete or be justified as a choice.
Books, I could not live with out this. Wine, nice but I rarely partake Cats, I like other people's cats, but I don't want one in my home. Music, I cannot get rid of this. Art Beer, nice but I can live without it. I notice that if you take out wine and beer, there is still hard liquor, assorted liqueurs and cocktails. Tea, nice but I can live without it. Dogs, I cannot afford one right now but I want one someday. Cinema, does this mean going to the cinema, because that is practically extinct now. Does it count streaming stuff? I really like movies but I must admit that every passing year good movies become harder and harder to find. Coffee, more often than not, I use energy drinks for my caffeine fix. Facebook, the only thing on this list that I view as a bad thing. Chocolate, I like it, but I'd be healthier without it.
My first two pick are Books and Music. But the third is a little harder. I cant decide between Coffee or Wine as I like both very much. But ultimately I couldn't live without coffee and do without wine. Grrr, Imrahil
If I choose to get rid of dogs, dogs aren't driven extinct right? It just means I can't own a dog. What about me petting a friend's dog?
