So, I have a (still 2nd ed AoS) 2000 pt battle vs. Big Waagh! coming up this month. My list needs to be just Coalesced (no sub-faction) with a Terradon Chief as one of the heroes. We've been doing sort of an escalation series of battles. I have available: 1 Oldblood on foot or Sunblood 1 Oldblood or Scar-Vet on Carnosaur 1 Scar-Vet on Cold One 1 Troglodon 1 Priest proxy 2 Starpriests 1 Slann proxy, or Kroak proxy, or Starseer proxy 1 Terradon Chief 100 Skinks using lots of old models - I can take out some of the Skinks to use as Chameleon Skinks 40 Saurus using some old models 10 Knights 10 Guard 3-6 Kroxigor using some old metal models 6 Terradons 1 Bastiladon I'm about 95% sure he'll have something like: Gordrakk Megaboss on foot Weirdnob Shaman 1-2 Warchanters 2 units of 10 Ardboyz 2 units of 3 Gruntas 2 units of 5 Brutes What do you think would make a moderately effective Coalesced list vs. Big Waagh? Plus, any strategy tips? He likes to use the Orruk teleport spell and/or has tended to just charge forward. He is able to build up Waagh points VERY quickly. Thank you for any suggestions!
Here is my previous list I ran vs Khorne to decent success. I don't know if it will be as effective vs. Orruks. Allegiance: Seraphon - Constellation: Coalesced Leaders Saurus Scar-Veteran on Cold One (110) - General - Command Trait: Mighty Warleader Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur (230) - Artefact: Blade of Realities Skink Starpriest (120) - Spell: Hand of Glory Terradon Chief (70) Battleline 10 x Saurus Knights (200) - Lances 30 x Saurus Warriors (270) - Spears 40 x Skinks (240) - Boltspitters Celestite Daggers & Star Bucklers 10 x Skinks (60) - Meteoric Javelins Celestite Daggers & Star Bucklers Units 5 x Chameleon Skinks (90) 5 x Chameleon Skinks (90) 3 x Kroxigor (140) 3 x Terradon Riders (90) - Sunleech Bolas Behemoths Bastiladon (220) Endless Spells / Terrain / CPs Bound Quicksilver Swords (40) Prismatic Palisade (30) Total: 2000 / 2000 Extra Command Points: 0 Allies: 0 / 400 Wounds: 169 I've considered dropping the bastiladon to bring a slann or maybe a starseer. I'd probably change up the endless spells too.
I would look at lowing your Saurus Warrior count to add in a Slann. Getting Comets Call will make it much easier to access and kill his Warchantas as quickly as possible, which is a major priority. For the same reason you should hold onto the Bastiladon. If you've been effectice with your Terradons in previous games I would also bring the 6x of them. Having a couple more Skink screens is also a good idea vs BW. You need to focus your opponent's heroes ASAP. This in turn means you need to delay his Gorgruntas, Ardboyz, and Brutes, or just be willing to take the punch (which is a really big ask).
Remove the Warriors? I guess I assumed that, since the army is Coalesced, they might be good to use. I've had decent results from them screening the Oldblood on Carno in my last game. But I can see that manking some sense. I just feel "naked" with fewer units. Ha ha ha. I admit, I've had mixed effectiveness in the Terradons. I tanked it against LoN and SCE. But one-shot a Khorne hero.
@LizardWizard what do you think about this? It's just a simple change out of the Warriors for a Slann & Geminids. However, I don't have any extra Skink screens or more Terradons like you suggested. I'm not sure what to drop or change to get that. It's my inexperience talking but I'm concerned about getting too thin with my units. Maybe I'm putting too much into Chameleons & Kroxigor? Or maybe I'm too focused on "outpunching" or really "counter-punching" with a Carnosaur? Allegiance: Seraphon - Constellation: Coalesced Leaders Saurus Scar-Veteran on Cold One (110) - General - Command Trait: Mighty Warleader Slann Starmaster (260) - Artefact: Itxi Grubs - Spell: Stellar Tempest Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur (230) Skink Starpriest (120) - Spell: Hand of Glory Terradon Chief (70) Battleline 10 x Saurus Knights (200) - Lances 40 x Skinks (240) - Boltspitters Celestite Daggers & Star Bucklers 10 x Skinks (60) - Meteoric Javelins Celestite Daggers & Star Bucklers Units 5 x Chameleon Skinks (90) 5 x Chameleon Skinks (90) 3 x Kroxigor (140) 3 x Terradon Riders (90) - Sunleech Bolas Behemoths Bastiladon (220) Endless Spells / Terrain / CPs Bound Geminids of Uhl-Gysh (70) Total: 1990 / 2000 Extra Command Points: 0 Allies: 0 / 400 Wounds: 146
You just need to bear in mind that for AoS 3.0, you can only reinforce a unit twice, so Skinks are now max 30 per unit
Indeed. But my group and I are not too interested in AoS 3.0 (at least for now). So it's still AoS 2 for us.
According to me you have to think what will be the purpose and the placement of every unit Thé 10 skinks to screen why not but why the 40 ? To do 80 shoot with the aptitude of your hero ? If you do the math all this ressource for 27 hit for a max of 5 mw ? 80 shoot for 5 mw doesnt look as a good use of your ressources In coalesced drop the skink for more saurus. I préfèr thé knight I would also take 6 terradon to make your terradon chief worth it Take that as advice as I am not an expérience player
Thank you @Kakalou1. I used a slightly different list, but I did poorly (I'm a pretty bad player). I split up the Skinks into units of 20 to surround the Carnosaur & Bastiladon/Kroxigor. It sort of worked, but I didn't maintain the formations well. I agree that it could have been good to use more Saurus. However, I think I'm so focused on having some shooting to soften targets b/c I've found the Seraphon to be kind of fragile in melee. The Carnosaur, when fresh is VERY tough, and can still be a threat to battleline even at half wounds. I know everyone else LOVES Knights, but I've had limited success with them. I can't seem to keep them from getting charged first, even with a screen.
