Hello all! I came across this site while looking up a possible trade that I have offered to me. I am looking to trade my Tau for an AoS army. I'm very up in the air with what I want to play and Seraphon on my "slightly interested" tier so I'm currently entertaining the following offer.

    My Tau:
    • 1x Tauanar Supremacy (recast)
    • 1x Riptide
    • 1x Stormsurge
    • 1x Commander Shadowsun
    • 1x Tau Commander
    • 3x Ethereal on Disc
    • 8x Crisis Suits
    • 1x Devilfish
    • 2x Tiger Shark
    • 30x Drones
    • 10x Breacher Team
    • 10x Strike Team
    • 20x Pathfinders
    • 1x Start Collecting box complete
    • 1x big bits box full of guns, armor, faces, etc.

    His Seraphon Offer:
    • Scar Vet on Carnosaur
    • Oracle on Troglodon (con)
    • Slann Scar Vet on Cold One (con)
    • Sunblood (con)
    • Skink Starpriest
    • Skink Priest (con)
    • Astrolith Bearer (con)
    • Saurus Warriors x10
    • Skinks w/ blowgun and club x12
    • Knights x5 (x2 NOS)
    • Bastilodon Terradon x3
    • 1 Start Collecting Seraphon NOS
While I am interested in Seraphon, my knowledge of the army is very limited. I'm checking them out but I would really appreciate some players' opinions on if this offer is a decent spread of units and characters.

    I really appreciate any help!

Hi @Heisenron. @Erta Wanderer is likely right.

Still, even thought I don't know enough about Tau, I can try to share some thoughts on the Seraphon models to help your decision. First, what does (con) mean? Second, I'm a little confused by a couple parts of the Seraphon list. If you can confirm:

    1 Scar-vet on Carnosaur
    - A good hero/monster for Seraphon in 3.0.
1 Oracle on Troglodon - A decent hero/wizard/monster for Seraphon in 3.0, but it's overpriced in the game and might be hard to fit in a list.
(was it supposed to say "Slann Scar-vet on Cold One" or was that a typo?)
1 Slann? - If you actually do get one, this a very good hero/wizard for Seraphon in 3.0 and one of the better "standard" wizards in the game.
1 Scar-vet on Cold One - A good/decent foot hero for Seraphon in 3.0 that is priced well and mounted. Same command ability as Carnosaur.
1 Sunblood - A decent foot hero for Seraphon in 3.0, but GW recently nerfed its command ability so that it's not as effective.
1 Skink Starpriest - A good foot hero/wizard for Seraphon in 3.0 with a very good ability that's useful for almost any unit, but is a bit fragile.
1 Skink Priest - A good foot hero/priest for Seraphon in 3.0 with access to prayers and good abilities for "Skink" units (including Bastiladons & Stegadons), but is fragile.
1 Astrolith Bearer - A good/decent foot hero for Seraphon in 3.0 with a 12" aura for 6+ save as well as increasing spell ranges for wizards.
10 Saurus Warriors - Decent battleline unit for Seraphon in 3.0 with good melee weapon options, but a bit on the slow side.
12 Skinks w/blowgun & club - Decent/good battleline unit for Seraphon in 3.0. They're fast and have ranged options, but don't hit easily in small numbers and are fragile.
10 Saurus Knights - Good battleline unit for Serphon in 3.0. They're fast and can hit well for their cost, but mostly if buffed.
(was it supposed to say "Bastiladon Terradons x3" or was that a typo?)
1 Bastiladon? - If you actually get one, this a good ranged monster for Seraphon in 3.0, and very useful in the Thunder Lizard subfaction, which is arguably Serphon's best subfaction in 3.0.
3 Terradons - Decent flying unit for Seraphon in 3.0. They're our fastest unit with decent ranged weapons and they can drop boulders (once per game) to cause mortal wounds. Still, they work best with a Terradon Chief hero and are fragile.
1 Start Collecting Seraphon - With the Start Collecting you can add:
    • 1 Carnosaur or 1 Troglodon - Build the Carnosaur. Build as either an Oldblood or Scar-vet. Right now, Scar-vet is preferred. Oldblood is tough and has a ranged attack, but has a redundant command ability and is expensive in the game. Still, it might be good to have the option.)
    • 10 Saurus Warriors (with 2 left over)
    • 1 Astrolith Bearer (this is a "proxy" built from one of the leftover Warriors)
    • 5 Saurus Knights (with 3 left over)
    • 1 Scar-vet on Cold One (this is a "proxy" built from one of the leftover Knights)
    • 1 Skink Starpriest or Skink Priest (this is a "proxy" built from the Oracle that goes on the Troglodon).
All total you will have 2 Carnosaurs, 1 Slann (hopefully), a few useful Skink heroes, a couple possible Saurus heroes, 20 Warriors, 15 Knights, 10 Skinks and 1 Bastiladon (hopefully). This is enough to form a decent base off which to build.

    . . . . . . . . . . .

Currently, Stegadons and the Engine of the Gods (built from Stegadon kit) are strong and versatile in 3.0, so 1-2 Stegadon kits would be the next logical purchase, plus the Seraphon battletome. Then it depends on what direction you'd like to go. Lord Kroak. Some Saurus Guard to help protect the Slann or Lord Kroak. Endless Spells. Either more Saurus or A LOT more Skinks. Salamanders and/or Razordons. Perhaps more Terradons and a Terradon Chief.

Having played both Tau and Seraphon I can say with some certainty that this isn't a great deal for you. Just going by what I remember Tau costing your collection has a lot more value than the Seraphon you were offered. You may be better served by auctioning your tau on eBay which is what I did when I got out of 40k. There are bound to be a lot of whole armies up for sale on eBay as well with the recent edition being released and the meta changing a lot. If you end up getting an AoS army try to avoid large horde units since they got really nerfed in this edition.
